We’ll soon be under construction for the largest project ever done on
our campus!
First Year Experience Housing Village will begin construction
in late March. Students now parking in Lot 9 will begin moving their cars
into the new Stanton Parking Garage in mid- March. As soon as the lot is
clear, our general contractor, Kiewit, will start staging the site. Simultaneously, Colorado Springs Utilities will start trenching along Alpine Village Drive to underground high-voltage electrical lines which currently
run overhead, across Lot 8. Once the electrical lines are out of the way,
we’ll start re-grading the site and installing new underground utilities.
Look for updates on the official ground-breaking ceremony.
The Lane Center
By: Stan Rovira, Project Manager
UCCS’s newest building, The Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences
is now operating and open to the public. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is
scheduled for February 19th. A community open house with tours of the building
is scheduled for Saturday, February 22 from 1-3 p.m.
The building features a Peak Vista Senior Health Clinic, UCCS Health Circle clinics including the Aging Center, the Gerontology Center, a nurse-led family
practice clinic, the Center for Active Living, and a Nutrition clinic. Level Four of
the building will be occupied by the University of Colorado School of Medicine as
the first step toward establishing a branch medical campus at UCCS.
Hello from the North Pole
To get a break from all his work at the
North Pole, Santa also works at UCCS! Facilities
Services’ very own Doug Cook is not only a part of
the Outdoors Services team, but he also spends his
winters helping out Santa. Pictured: Doug Cook

McCormick’s daughter, Autumn.

The Facilities Services department has organized itself into
two primary areas: Planning,
Design & Construction and
Physical Plant Maintenance. The
Planning & Construction team is
actively working on minor and
major construction projects. The
Physical Plant team includes
four work groups: Maintenance,
Outdoor Services, Electrical, and
Custodial. Their responsibilities
include maintaining campus academic and administrative buildings. Facilities Services administrative team is the glue that keeps
our teams connected. Each team
is committed to the continued
improvement of the UCCS campus and serving you.
Facilities’ Annual Holiday Party & Ugly Sweater Contest
Facilities’ annual holiday party was another
success! This year’s ugly sweater winner was defending
champion and UCCS project manager, Brad Johnson.
Despite being 6ft 6in, he managed to fit into a sweater
that was half his size! Other contestants (featured right)
include: Mariness Falcon (Planning and Construction),
Amanda Lopez (Sign Shop Student), and Jackie Fuhrman
(Administrative Student). Other than ugly sweaters, there
was great company, food, and fun.
Snow and Ice Removal
While it may seem UCCS has already received its fair
share of snow this year, we are expecting a lot more in the
months to come. Facilities will be working hard removing all the
ice and snow even within below freezing temperatures. During
these events, we appreciate all your calls and emails alerting us
to problem areas around campus. WE COUNT ON YOU to inform us of problem areas by calling x3313 or emailing dely@uccs.edu. If a vehicle becomes stuck in the snow, Facilities
can apply sand underneath the tires. As a safety reminder,
please dress appropriately for these events. Properly treaded
shoes for traveling to and from your vehicle are most essential
and please travel on walkways that have been attended to if possible. Also, drive safely and be courteous to other drivers especially during inclement weather. Be aware that our vehicles are
plowing and spreading sand and ice melt over campus
as quickly and efficiently as possible.
East Campus Parking Lot
By: Brad Johnson, Project Manager
We are designing a new parking lot on the
East side of campus, south of our greenhouse. The new parking lot will have at
least 250 spaces to help relieve campus
parking. A new bus stop will be constructed adjacent to the space. Our target
construction completion date is ahead of
Fall 2014 semester.
Engineering Classroom and Bathroom Remodel
Over winter break, we installed new carpet and paint at the Engineering classrooms. We painted walls and replaced ceiling tiles outside Men and Women’s restrooms
at 1st and 2nd floors. In the restrooms, we installed new countertops, sinks, faucets and
shelving. Come check us out!
Academic Office Building

Below: Academic Office
Building
The Academic Office Building project is under construction! The new building will have 111 private offices and 9 spaces shared,
a 2-story open lobby, large conference rooms with short-throw projectors, high 10’ ceilings, high performance glazing, transom windows at
each office, individual controlled office HVAC zones, and a 5th floor
rooftop deck. The contractor, Nunn Construction, is currently standing
exterior studs on north and south elevations and sheathing. Nunn is starting the spray-foam
barrier installation this week. They have completed
interior framing on 1st and 2nd levels and currently
moving forward on 3rd and 4th. Mechanical roughin is tracking behind framing. The roofing installation will begin next week. Overall the project is on
schedule and targeting substantial completion July
1st.

Welcome to Facilities!
Get to Know: Rob Dougherty
Which Facilities member enjoys fly fishing with his daughter Kristina, eating Hagen-daz chocolate ice cream with chocolate
chips, and having a good laugh with Clay Gardner? It’s our very
own Physical Plant Director, Rob Dougherty!
Rob has been working at Facilities Services for five years
and his favorite part is being part of an organization that is
“stretching and growing” quickly. He is originally from Long Island, New York but fell in love with not only his wife while attending University of Northern Colorado, but also with Colorado and skiing. While he enjoys skiing, Rob also enjoys taking motorcycle
rides on his VTX 1800 Honda with friends
from Compassion International, eating Sushi or
other great Japanese dishes with his wife
Gayle, walking in the Garden of the Gods with
his 91 year old mother, and attending all his
nieces and nephews activities (swim meets,
Lacrosse games, music recitals, and birthdays).
Rob even mentioned that UCCS needs its
men’s and women’s lacrosse teams!
Rob’s goal for 2014 is to get to know
more of the UCCS community members so
next time you see him, don’t be afraid to say
hello or give him a creative suggestion for
his 40th wedding anniversary in November.
