Date: Time: Place: Program: Tuesday, December 6, 2011 9:00 a.m. coffee – 9:30 a.m. program CHRIST MEMORIAL CHURCH, GATHERING PLACE Holland Symphony Orchestra: Kay Walvoord, President and CEO and three Chamber groups Three chamber groups of the Holland Symphony Orchestra will perform music of the season showcasing the orchestra’s leadership: String Quartet, Woodwind Quartet and Brass Quintet. The President & CEO, Kay Walvoord, will speak briefly about the growth of the Symphony and plans for the future. The Holland Symphony Orchestra is a semi-professional orchestra with strong ties to the local community. The orchestra began as Holland Chamber Orchestra in 1989 performing the first concert that spring under the direction of Gerrit Van Ravenswaay. John Varineau led the orchestra as Music Director from 1992–1996 and Mihai Craioveanu from 1996-2001. The musical leadership of Morihiko Nakahara from 2001-2006 brought exciting growth to the orchestra and the organization. In 2006, German-born Johannes Műller-Stosch was appointed from a field of 140 candidates following a national search. In 2000 the Holland Chamber Orchestra formally changed its name to the Holland Symphony Orchestra to communicate more fully the growth of the orchestra. Over 120 musicians from the greater Holland area and beyond comprise the orchestra. Holland Symphony Youth Orchestras began in 1988 as a program of Holland Area Arts Council and became jointly sponsored by the Holland Symphony and the Arts Council after the Symphony was incorporated. Currently the youth orchestra is a program solely sponsored by Holland Symphony and has grown to two orchestras: Holland Area Youth Orchestra, an auditioned high school orchestra of 75 students and Holland Area Junior Strings, a non-auditioned middleschool string orchestra of 40 students. Holland Jazz Orchestra joined the Symphony family in 2010 and its members present concerts with Hope College, Tulip Time, in the schools and with the Symphony at Pops at the Piper. Concert offerings include a wide range of opportunities for the whole family: · Three classical subscription concerts: October, November, April · 2 Holiday Concerts with the Holland Chorale · Family Concert featuring the winner of the Norbert Mueller Memorial Concerto Competition · “Pops at the Piper,” a pops concert held in June at Eldean Boatshed · Community Concert, free concert held in August in Kollen Park · Two youth concerts: Holland Area Youth Orchestra, Holland Area Junior Strings, 3 Honors Chamber Ensembles: String, Woodwind and Brass 1 MEMBERSHIP If you are a new member, or a member who has ordered a new name tag, please pick them up in the HASP office or at the membership table at the next monthly meeting! Local Parish Nurses wish to provide this service to address both physical and spiritual needs. It is particularly critical for diabetics to have a detailed observation of their feet by a trained professional nurse, as well as personal education on foot care. Each session includes a warm foot bath, foot massage, nail and callus care. Massage with lotion coincides with continued conversation and relationship building. The session is meant to provide focused attention, physical touch and spiritual care to the client. Sessions will take as much time as needed, but will be scheduled every 30 minutes. If available, new footwear is provided. A local podiatrist provides training to the nurses in nail and callus care, as well as to recognize conditions needing referral. Contact Kim Jennings (392-3610) at the Holland Free Health Clinic, 99 West 26th St, Holland. Further information is available from Ann Anderson (399-3796). Tulip Time Trolley Guides Needed Last year HASP provided most of the trolley tour guides during Tulip Time week. Forty guides were scheduled to provide guidance for 200 tours. More than forty (40) guides will be needed for Tulip Time 2012. Guides attend a training session in mid April. The training includes materials and extensive scrip for narrating the seventy five (75) minute tours. Guides are required to wear a Dutch costume provided by the Tulip Time festival office if they do not have one of their own. In addition to the City of Holland, trolleys are brought in from Grand Rapids and Saugatuck. Due to the popularity of the tours, MAX buses are also used. Visitors from all over the USA ride the trolley as guides provide a relaxed narration about tulips, wooden shoes, Hope College, Window on the Waterfront, downtown Holland, Kollen Park, Holland history, Washington Avenue’s boulevard of tulips and many other interesting sites. In mid February, guides are sent a trolley schedule to mark the times they are available. A guide may wish to be available one day or all eight days. How many runs do you want? Two? Four? Six? Would you like to do mornings or afternoons? In effect, you determine your own schedule. Snowbirds are welcome. We will contact you in the south. Sound interesting? It is more than interesting. IT IS FUN!!! If interested, please contact Larry Lynn at 399-0799 or oldrun@aol.com. February 2012 -- Historic Churches of Holland, Thursday, February 9, 2012 The city of Holland is sometimes referred to as a city with “a church on every corner.” On Thursday, February 9, you will have an opportunity to visit four of the oldest churches in Holland to learn their history (how, when, why and by whom they were founded), to see and understand how their architecture and art relate to their beliefs and mode of worship, and to hear the music of their organ. Our mid-day meal will be enjoyed at the Methodist Church. Churches to be visited are Pillar Church (1847) led by Dr. Robert Swierenga, Graafschap Church (1857) led by Bill Sytsma and Cal Hoogstra, First United Methodist Church (1861) led by David Newton, and St. Francis DeSales (1883) led by Marilyn Torborg. HASP Office News HASP Helps Through Financial Support of Hope Scholarship What a privilege it was to be able to introduce our HASP scholarship recipient to you at our November monthly program meeting. After having met Iliana Garcia at the annual donor-recipient luncheon on October 25, I was eager to give you a small sampling of this gracious young lady. It is possible that you may not realize, that because of contributions made by HASP members “to provide scholarships to students with financial need and demonstrating potential for academic excellence,” we have empowered students each year to further their education at Hope. Recipients must be entering their junior year and, upon maintaining high academic achievement, may be considered for an additional year. New contributions to our scholarship are always welcome. Iliana, the older of two daughters, was born in California to a Mexican-American woman who had immigrated at the age of 19. She became a single mom, striving to raise her children against difficult odds. Earlier dreams of her own future gave way to working to assure their realization in the girls. She now sustains three jobs and sees Iliana only at Christmas and during the summers. In high school, Iliana became a Rotary Exchange Student in Italy for a year and, as part of her Hope experience, has taken a semester abroad in Greece. She aspires to finish her Political Science/Philosophy degree and then apply to the Peace Corps, after which she hopes to enter law school. Because she has a remarkable track record of fine accomplishments and hard work, it is reasonable to assume that she will continue to persevere in her life journey. Because a school counselor saw her potential and brought her to Hope, Iliana was made aware of an opportunity that has lifted her well beyond what she had known in her peer group, most of whom have since dropped out of school and/or become unwed mothers. She appreciates the Christ-centered emphasis and high standards she has experienced at Hope. Thanks to those of you who have helped financially to make possible our scholarship; you can feel deep satisfaction in helping a student like Iliana. Peg VanGrouw, HASP President 4 Please note: **The HASP office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 23-25, 2011. ** In conjunction with the Hope College entire campus shut-down the HASP office will be closed Friday, December 23 – Monday, January 2, 2012.
