Quality as the Result of a Deep-Seated Culture
of Innovation.
Great inventions are a tradition at WACKER. As
early as 1954, scientists at WACKER’s Burghausen site commenced production of hyperpure silicon. Now, WACKER is the world’s second-largest
producer of polycrystalline silicon. The material has
a purity of 99.9999999 percent.
In 1957, WACKER chemists invented a powder
binder to which modern dry-mix mortars owe their
existence. Now, with VINNAPAS®, WACKER is the
world market leader in polymeric binders.

Our Dubai technical center covers all aspects of
building construction, focusing on formulations
for polymer and silicone products. In the labs,

optimize a self-leveling compound for local raw

Testing and Optimizing Formulations
The staff at our state-of-the-art lab at the Dubai
technical center will test your products using local

Research and development play a key role
at WACKER. Basic research is carried out at
WACKER’s Munich research center. Application-driven research is performed by the
respective research groups/divisions.
Basic Research for the Future
The “Consortium für elektrochemische Industrie”
has spearheaded basic research at WACKER
for over a hundred years. One focus of current
research is white biotechnology. The aim is to
produce bulk chemicals from renewable resources instead of crude oil – the most common raw
material today.
In one concrete project, WACKER’s basic-research
team is developing ways of producing ethylene
and acetic acid from renewable raw materials.
Acetic acid and ethylene are the feedstocks for
vinyl acetate, which WACKER processes into polymeric binders for a number of different industries.

Inexpensive industrial production of highperformance LEDs or high energy savings with
exterior insulation and finish systems – both

Pacesetters for Growth Markets
There’s hardly an industry where WACKER’s
research doesn’t play a role. For example, we
developed a novel strong binder to give industry an
important basic material for exterior insulation and
finish systems. For the lighting industry, WACKER
manufactures high-performance optical-grade
silicones that can be used to produce heat-resistant, photostable lenses directly on the LED chip.

This greatly reduces manufacturing costs and will
help make the next generation of LED technology
accessible to the mass market.
WACKER concentrates its research on growth
markets, in semiconductor technology, silicone
and polymer chemistry and biotechnology. As
one of the world’s largest producers of hyperpure silicon, WACKER also plays a major role in
researching innovative methods of producing
polycrystalline silicon.
Close Contact with Customers
Applications-oriented research looks for technical
answers to customers’ needs, with the aim of
opening up new business potential. Engineers,
scientists and customer advisors in the research
groups/business divisions cooperate closely
with the company concerned. The central lab at
WACKER’s Burghausen site in Germany plays
a key part here. WACKER researches issues of
strong regional relevance directly in the region
concerned.
Knowledge Transfer between Industry and
Universities
We collaborate with scientific institutes and universities to achieve successful research results faster.
A specific example is the “Institute of Silicon Chemistry,” which we founded at the Technical University of Munich. Ph.D. students are currently writing
twenty dissertations on questions relating to silicon
chemistry. The research results will directly benefit
customers.
We foster close ties to many universities worldwide.
The forms of cooperation range from endowed
professorships in Germany to applications seminars for students in the United Arab Emirates.

WACKER is the leading manufacturer of the
polymeric binders used for exterior insulation
and finish systems. The high-tech insulating
materials can slash the energy consumed for air
conditioning by two thirds. Exterior insulation
and finish systems keep interiors cool when the
temperature outside is soaring. And they keep
the heat in the building when it’s cold outside,
saving both time and money.
WACKER’s labs produce interesting innovations
and products for better quality of life every day.
WACKER experts produce over 3,500 raw materials for products worldwide.
Only insiders have an inkling of how much WACKER
is contained in everyday objects. For example,
WACKER scientists developed new laminates
from natural products using the patented VINNEX®
binder. They can be used for completely novel
flooring, for example natural stone flooring that
feels warm underfoot, based on natural cork, slate
and VINNEX®. Another recent WACKER invention
is a silicone emulsion for textile impregnation,
whose water-repellent effect on functional clothing
can be easily renewed in the washing machine.

Social Responsibility

To help people in need, we have set up a range
of assistance programs.
Our WACKER relief fund provides long-term
support for victims of natural disasters. The focus
is on improving the future prospects of children by
means of school education.
Thousands died. Houses and crops were washed
away, including the elementary school in Marghuzar, Swat district. Lessons have been held in the
open air ever since. Together with the Malteser
International relief corps, the WACKER relief fund is
building a new schoolhouse here, where 250 girls
will be taught in future. The new school is designed
for better resistance to the elements. At the same

In Pakistan, the WACKER relief fund is involved
in rebuilding an elementary school. In July 2010,
heavy monsoon rains in northwestern Pakistan
led to extensive flooding with mud and land slides.

Integrated sustainability: we return manufacturing by-products
