How can chemistry contribute more to climate protection? How can we enhance quality of life for aging societies? With an R&D quotient of between 4 and 5 percent relative to sales, WACKER ranks among the world’s most research-intensive chemical companies. 12 What is Quality OF RESEARCH? When a Company Has Filed 4,355 Patent Applications, and Millions of People around the World Are Profiting from the Innovations. Research and development play a key role at WACKER. Basic research is carried out at WACKER’s Munich research center. Application-driven research is performed by the respective research groups/divisions. Basic Research for the Future The “Consortium für elektrochemische Industrie” has spearheaded basic research at WACKER for over a hundred years. One focus of current research is white biotechnology. The aim is to produce bulk chemicals from renewable resources instead of crude oil – the most common raw material today. In one concrete project, WACKER’s basic-research team is developing ways of producing ethylene and acetic acid from renewable raw materials. Acetic acid and ethylene are the feedstocks for vinyl acetate, which WACKER processes into polymeric binders for a number of different industries. 13 WACKER is Integral to Countless Everyday Items. Applications-oriented research is an integral part of WACKER’s innovation process. Inexpensive industrial production of highperformance LEDs or high energy savings with exterior insulation and finish systems – both are possible thanks to WACKER’s applicationsoriented research. Pacesetters for Growth Markets There’s hardly an industry where WACKER’s research doesn’t play a role. For example, we developed a novel strong binder to give industry an important basic material for exterior insulation and finish systems. For the lighting industry, WACKER manufactures high-performance optical-grade silicones that can be used to produce heat-resistant, photostable lenses directly on the LED chip. 14 This greatly reduces manufacturing costs and will help make the next generation of LED technology accessible to the mass market. WACKER concentrates its research on growth markets, in semiconductor technology, silicone and polymer chemistry and biotechnology. As one of the world’s largest producers of hyperpure silicon, WACKER also plays a major role in researching innovative methods of producing polycrystalline silicon. Close Contact with Customers Applications-oriented research looks for technical answers to customers’ needs, with the aim of opening up new business potential. Engineers, scientists and customer advisors in the research groups/business divisions cooperate closely with the company concerned. The central lab at WACKER’s Burghausen site in Germany plays a key part here. WACKER researches issues of strong regional relevance directly in the region concerned. Knowledge Transfer between Industry and Universities We collaborate with scientific institutes and universities to achieve successful research results faster. A specific example is the “Institute of Silicon Chemistry,” which we founded at the Technical University of Munich. Ph.D. students are currently writing twenty dissertations on questions relating to silicon chemistry. The research results will directly benefit customers. We foster close ties to many universities worldwide. The forms of cooperation range from endowed professorships in Germany to applications seminars for students in the United Arab Emirates. 15 WHAT IS QUALITY OF LIFE? Sitting in a Pleasantly Cool Room when It’s 40°C Outside, Without the Air Conditioner Running Flat Out. 16 WACKER is the leading manufacturer of the polymeric binders used for exterior insulation and finish systems. The high-tech insulating materials can slash the energy consumed for air conditioning by two thirds. Exterior insulation and finish systems keep interiors cool when the temperature outside is soaring. And they keep the heat in the building when it’s cold outside, saving both time and money. WACKER’s labs produce interesting innovations and products for better quality of life every day. WACKER experts produce over 3,500 raw materials for products worldwide. Only insiders have an inkling of how much WACKER is contained in everyday objects. For example, WACKER scientists developed new laminates from natural products using the patented VINNEX® binder. They can be used for completely novel flooring, for example natural stone flooring that feels warm underfoot, based on natural cork, slate and VINNEX®. Another recent WACKER invention is a silicone emulsion for textile impregnation, whose water-repellent effect on functional clothing can be easily renewed in the washing machine. 17 We Want to Help Improve Quality of Life Worldwide. Just as Much through Our Social Commitment as through Our Products. The WACKER relief fund is helping to ensure that schoolchildren who are victims of flooding in northwestern Pakistan will soon have a roof over their heads again. 18 Quality of life means dealing with people. And if you deal with people, you have to take your social responsibility seriously. WACKER does that every day on five continents. Responsibility for Employees Around the world, about 16,000 employees give their best for our customers and business partners every day. They are the source of our outstanding innovation and quality. As a company, it is our duty to ensure that our employees remain healthy and effective. Health and safety at work therefore take a high priority at WACKER. Social Responsibility WACKER is an inextricable part of the warp and weft of society worldwide. That means responsibility. We are happy to take up this challenge. To help people in need, we have set up a range of assistance programs. Our WACKER relief fund provides long-term support for victims of natural disasters. The focus is on improving the future prospects of children by means of school education. Thousands died. Houses and crops were washed away, including the elementary school in Marghuzar, Swat district. Lessons have been held in the open air ever since. Together with the Malteser International relief corps, the WACKER relief fund is building a new schoolhouse here, where 250 girls will be taught in future. The new school is designed for better resistance to the elements. In tsunami-ravaged Sri Lanka, it is providing money to build a new school. In Germany, WACKER supports the “Die Arche” children’s charity. This charity helps to get children from socially disadvantaged families off the streets, give their lives a new direction and improve their job prospects. In Pakistan, the WACKER relief fund is involved in rebuilding an elementary school. In July 2010, heavy monsoon rains in northwestern Pakistan led to extensive flooding with mud and land slides. 19 WHAT IS QUALITY OF Growth? Prioritizing a Long-Term Contribution to Global Progress Rather than Short-Term Profits. Growth with Responsibility The Wacker family has a majority holding in the company. This impacts corporate policies. Instead of maximizing short-term profit, we strive for success in the long term. Our main challenge is to strike a balance between economic success and social and ecological responsibility. Globalization Involves Commitments WACKER was among the first companies to sign the Responsible Care® charter, In doing this, WACKER made a voluntary commitment to do more for health and safety at work than is legally required. In keeping with this principle, we work continually on making our production safe for humans and the environment, while conserving resources. The Responsible Care® philosophy is now so ingrained at WACKER that we accept many occupational safety and environmental protection measures as normal routine without consciously ascribing them to the Responsible Care® initiative. WACKER is globally active. We generate some 80 percent of our sales outside Germany. We therefore see ourselves responsible for the sustainable development of our Earth. 20 As an international company, we have moreover signed up to the UN Global Compact initiative. Signatories to the Compact undertake to adhere to social and ethical standards in their worldwide activities. Key commitments include the protection of human rights, lobbying for the abolition of child labor, forced labor and discrimination, a responsible environmental approach and combating corruption. Integrated sustainability: we return manufacturing by-products to the integrated materials loop. Similarly, many chemical reactions liberate heat, which we use for other production steps. Thanks to this intelligent integrated production system, we save energy and raw materials while cutting waste and emissions. 21 Expertise and Service Network on Five Continents • Sales and production sites, plus 20 technical centers, ensure our local service presence worldwide.
