About Inventory for Network Devices
Inventory for Network Devices gathers inventory data from discovered devices
in your network. This inventory is gathered from the devices that are not managed
through the Symantec Management Agent. Because a management agent is not
required, this inventory is considered an agentless inventory.
Agentless inventory gathers inventory on the devices that are already discovered
and exist as resources in the Symantec Management Platform's Configuration
Management Database (CMDB). Generally, you use agentless inventory to gather
inventory on the devices that are discovered using the Network Discovery
component of the Symantec Management Platform.
This inventory is performed by running agentless inventory tasks on discovered
devices and reporting the data to Notification Server. The discovery data is stored
in the CMDB. You configure the automated tasks that are scheduled to run at
regular intervals to keep your inventory data current.
You can gather inventory on the following types of devices:

Currently, agentless inventory gathers inventory only on SNMP-enabled devices.
You can determine the type of inventory that is gathered through SNMP data
mapping tables. Agentless inventory collects data from the SNMP-enabled network
devices that are based on SNMP data mapping tables. The tables identify the data
fields you want to collect and apply the settings to selected device types.
See “Gathering agentless inventory” on page 23.
See “About SNMP data mapping” on page 31.

About gathering agentless inventory
You can gather basic inventory data of discovered SNMP network devices such
as computers, network printers, network-attached storage devices, and network
backup devices. The inventory is performed by running agentless tasks on
discovered devices and reporting the data to Notification Server. The discovery
data is stored in the CMDB. You configure the automated tasks that are scheduled
to run at regular intervals to keep your inventory data current.
See “About Inventory for Network Devices” on page 9.
See “Gathering agentless inventory” on page 23.
When you configure agentless inventory tasks, you specify the following:
■
Which devices to inventory
■
Which network protocols to use to communicate with devices (connection
profile)
■
When to run the task
22
Gathering agentless inventory
About gathering agentless inventory
You can configure multiple tasks to meet your needs.
For example, you can create the tasks that are based on the following:
■
Which devices you want to inventory
■
How often you want to run the inventory tasks
You can create and configure agentless inventory tasks in the following ways:
Using the Agentless
Inventory wizard
The wizard guides you through the creation and
configuration of agentless inventory tasks. You can later
edit the advanced settings and schedules of a task by using
the task page.
See “Creating agentless inventory tasks using the wizard”
on page 24.
Manually creating a task
You can manually create tasks from the Task Management
Portal. This option lets you configure more advanced
settings and schedules.
See “Manually creating and modifying agentless inventory
tasks” on page 25.
You can only gather inventory of the devices that are already discovered. You can
use Network Discovery to discover network devices and create resources for them
in the CMDB.
For more information, see the topics about Network Discovery in the Symantec
Management Platform Help.
See “About Inventory for Network Devices” on page 9.
Agentless inventory tasks use connection profiles to manage the protocols that
are used to communicate with network devices. Connection profiles are
components of the Symantec Management Platform. When devices are discovered,
the protocols that are used to communicate with the device are stored in the
resource for that device in the CMDB. When you use agentless inventory tasks,
you do not specify a connection profile or protocols. Agentless inventory tasks
use the same protocols that were enabled when the device was discovered.
For more information, see the topics about resource discovery and using
connection profiles in the Symantec Management Platform Help.

About SNMP data mapping
■
Using SNMP data mapping tables
■
Exporting and importing SNMP data mapping tables
About SNMP data mapping
You use SNMP data mapping tables to define how to map SNMP devices to the
data that you want to collect. Many predefined tables exist for common SNMP
devices. You can also create your own tables to customize the collected data. These
tables are managed from the SNMP Data Mapping Tables page. The predefined
mappings cannot be edited.
See “Using SNMP data mapping tables” on page 32.
When you define a table, you specify Management Information Base (MIB) data
objects, also known as MIB files or MIBs. MIBs are the data objects that are defined
in the database. An SNMP manager uses them to control hardware and software
resources. MIBs let you expand the data fields that can be collected when inventory
runs. Inventory Solution for Network Devices already provides many MIBs of the
leading hardware manufacturers. You can also import additional MIBs using the
MIB Import task.
For more information, see the topics about MIB import in the Symantec
Management Platform Help.
When you map tables to a device, you choose a device from a list of classified
SNMP devices. This list is the same list of SNMP devices that are configured on

the SNMP Device Classifications page of Network Discovery. This list cannot be
manually edited from the SNMP Data Mapping Tables page. However, you can
configure it from the SNMP Device Classifications page of Network Discovery.
For more information, see the topics about classifying SNMP devices in the
Symantec Management Platform Help.
To gather the same inventory from different Notification Servers, you can also
export a table and then import it on a different server.
See “Exporting and importing SNMP data mapping tables” on page 33.
You can also test table definitions to ensure that you have defined the field values
for a table definition correctly. When you test the table, you test it on a single
device that you specify.
Using SNMP data mapping tables
You use SNMP data mapping tables to define how to map SNMP devices to the
data that you want to collect. Many predefined tables are provided for common
SNMP devices. You can also create your own tables to customize the collected
data. The predefined mappings are read-only and cannot be edited.
See “About SNMP data mapping” on page 31.
To view SNMP data mapping tables
1
In the Symantec Management Console, on the Home menu, click Discovery
and Inventory > Agentless Inventory.
2
In the Agentless Inventory Quick Start, click Data mapping tables.
3
In the left pane, click a table.
4
In the right pane, on the Table details tab, view table details.
5
In the right pane, on the Device mappings tab, view the SNMP devices to
which the table is mapped.
To test a table on a single device
1
Either in a new table or in the details of an existing table, click Test on Device.
2
Enter the host address or host name of the device you want to test.
3
Click Test.
The data appears if a valid response is received from the device.
To create a new mapping
1
On the SNMP Data Mapping Tables page, click New.
2
Enter a new table name and click OK.

3
Click the New symbol and add new rows.
4
To configure the row values, do the following:
■
Enter a name.
The name identifies the data field you want to collect when inventory
runs. The name you select is stored in the database and appears on
inventory reports.
■
Select a type.
■
Enter a length.
This field specifies the length of the field value. Some fields are predefined,
such as the integer type, which is always the length of 4.
■
(Optional) Make this row a primary key.
Check Key to enable the row to be a primary key in the data table.
■
Click Select OID to select an Object ID.
The Object ID is mapped to the source of the protocol information. For
example, it can map to the Object ID for an SNMP query. When you click
this field, you use the Object ID Selection Tool dialog box to select an
Object ID from the available MIBs. You can view the details of the Object
ID information when a row is selected in the column definition table.
See “About SNMP data mapping” on page 31.
5
Click OK.
6
Click Save changes.
7
Click Device Mappings and apply the table to devices.
8
In the list of all available device classes and types, in the first column of the
table, check the check boxes of the device types you want to apply to this
table.
9
Test the table to validate the table configuration.
See “Using SNMP data mapping tables” on page 32.
10 Click Save changes.
Exporting and importing SNMP data mapping tables
If you manage network devices in a large infrastructure, you can export and send
table configurations to other locations within your organization. This method is
an easy way to ensure that all servers that use Inventory for Network Devices
collect the same inventory. After you configure the tables that define the inventory
collection, you can save them using the Export option. You can send these files

to other administrators, who can then use the Import option to update the database
for their servers.
See “About SNMP data mapping” on page 31.
See “Using SNMP data mapping tables” on page 32.
To export a mapping table
1
On the SNMP Data Mapping Tables page, click the table you want to export
and then click Export.
2
Click Save.
3
Specify the path to which to save the exported file and the new file name, and
click Save.
By default, the file name is the same as the table name.
To import a mapping table
1
On the SNMP Data Mapping Tables page, click Import.
2
Browse to the file and click OK.
