The Last Year Lydia had a perfect life. She was captain of the soccer team, had a loyal boyfriend named Scott, and an amazing best friend, Allison. Lydia and Alison had history together. When Alison was 12, her mom had her meet with a therapist once a week. Alison struggled with anger issues. Lydia would go to the meeting every other week to support Allison. Allison got the help she needed and got better; at least that’s what everyone thought. It all started at school. Lydia drove her black Mercedes to her usual parking spot. She wore a blue blouse with skinny jeans and tan ankle boots. She got out of her car and met up with Scott. It was her senior year; Lydia had to make the best of it. Scott and Lydia walked to their first period class. They sat down next to each other in the back and talked all class. Eventually the bell rang. Lydia grabbed her books from under her desk, grabbed Scotts hand and walked out. Lydia went to her favorite class, second period English and Scott went to go meet up with his best friend Dylan in the science building. At lunch, Lydia was walking towards the front steps to meet everyone. She was walking past the quad when she noticed Scott talking to a girl. At first Lydia didn't think too much of it. As the day went on she couldn't stop worrying. After school, Lydia and Allison walked to their cars in the senior parking lot. Once Lydia got to her car she realized she had forgotten her books in the science lab. She was in a rush, so she hurried to go grab them. She walked up the school stairs and suddenly stopped. She thought she heard Scott’s voice. She lifted her foot and took one small, yet slow step but then stopped again. She heard his voice again, but this time she also heard a girl voice. Lydia peaked around the corner. She couldn't believe what she saw… Scott was kissing another girl! Lydia's face turned bright red. She couldn't believe it. Scott was her first love. How could he do this to her? She ran up to him and pushed his shoulders back. She started yelling “What are you doing?” “Why are you kissing this girl?!”. Scott didn't know what to say. He stayed silent. Lydia felt so betrayed. She turned, ran down the stairs, and went back to her car. She drove home in complete shock. The next day, Lydia avoided Scott as much as she could. She still couldn't believe what had happened. At lunch like every other day, the whole group met up at the steps in front of the school. Lydia stayed away from Scott and didn't look at him once. Allison and Dylan were sitting next to each other. Allison knew something was wrong but didn't say anything. They started talking about Lydia's annual Halloween party. It was the biggest event of the year. “So what’s the plan for the party?” said Allison excitedly. “I didn't really have a plan yet. I was thinking maybe a scavenger hunt” Lydia responded. Everyone nodded with smiles. It seemed like a great idea. After a couple minutes the bell rang and they all went to class. Throughout the week they made more and more plans. They all got together two days before the party at Lydia's house. Scott and Lydia hadn't talked since the day Lydia caught him kissing that girl. The room was very tense and awkward. Allison tried to break the silence, “What time should we get here for the party?” Lydia replied, “Around 9:30”. Everyone finished making decorations and then left. Dylan stayed behind to help make invitations. Dylan noticed Lydia seemed upset. He stood up, walked over to her, and sat down. He asked her what was wrong. “Nothing, it’s just…I caught Scott cheating on me with another girl”. “Oh wow! I'm so sorry I didn't know” Dylan said shocked. He gave her a hug. He let go and Lydia looked into his big brown eyes. Suddenly, Lydia looked away really fast. Dylan leaned in; he grabbed Lydia’s neck and pulled her close. “What are you doing?” said Lydia. “Just kiss me”. Dylan whispered softly. Lydia didn't feel right. Allison was her best friend. It would hurt Allison if she found out, but at that moment all Lydia wanted to do was kiss Dylan. Lydia leaned in and they kissed. Immediately after they kissed Lydia knew it was a bad idea. She rushed Dylan out the door and said goodbye. She ran up the stairs and went into her room. Soon enough, it was three in the morning and Lydia still couldn't fall asleep. She felt so bad about what happened. She texted Scott saying they should break up. Scott figured it was just because of that girl, but it was much more than that. She couldn't stay with Scott after all that had happened. Two days had passed and Scott and Allison still didn't know about the kiss. Lydia didn't have time to worry about it because it was the day of her party. Allison went over to Lydia's house and they got ready together. They were doing their makeup and Lydia couldn't hold it in any longer. She blurted out “Dylan and I kissed”. Allison turned around slowly. She looked furious. Lydia added “It meant nothing, I swear”. However that didn't change Allison’s new found hatred towards Lydia. Alison started screaming at Lydia. “What is your problem!?” “He's mine and you knew that!” “You will regret this Lydia Martin just wait and see”. Then Allison stormed out and left. Lydia's night was ruined. She ended up canceling the party because of what had happened. Lydia felt terrible about everything. Late that night Lydia couldn't fall asleep. She decided to go for a drive to calm down. She knew the perfect spot, she and Scott used to go there all the time. It was the apple tree in the hills next to a steep cliff. Lydia grabbed her purse and keys. She turned on the seat warmers and blasted Coldplay. Lydia was driving down the road and dropped her glasses. She reached down to get them and when she looked up there was a deer! Lydia hit the brakes but they locked. She didn't know what to do, the car wouldn't stop! She tried to dodge the deer by turning; however, Lydia didn't realize the cliff was right next to her. She spun off and her car drove off the cliff. By the next morning her parents were worried. “Lydia never goes out without checking in” they thought to themselves. Her parents went to search for her. First they checked the school, then Scott’s house. He didn't know where she was. Her parents checked the last place they thought she would be; the apple tree. Her parents knew she loved that place. She would always talk about how amazing it was there. Lydia’s parents drove up to the apple tree and noticed skid marks on the side of the road. They didn't see her car anywhere. They both spread out in search of her. Lydia’s dad was over by the tree when he heard his wife scream. He ran over to her as fast as he could. He looked over the cliff and saw her car. Lydia's mom fell to the ground. She whispered “Lydia” to herself while crying nonstop. Lydia's dad called the police. The police investigated the crash. They checked the car and realized this was no accident. It was a crime scene. The break lines were cut out and everything was covered with blood. There were body parts all over the windows of the car and Lydia was completely decapitated. Her head was gone and it wasn't in the car. The next day they started an investigation. They had 3 main suspects. Scott, Allison, and Dylan. They were Lydia's closest friends. They were also the only other people who knew Lydia's favorite spot. The police got warrants and searched each of their houses. They searched Scott’s house first. They didn't find anything. Next was Dylan's house. Dylan wasn't home at the time only his mom was. When he came home he was shocked to see all these people in his house. He didn't get mad because he knew they were just doing their job. However the police ended up finding nothing. The last house to be searched was Allison's. The police knocked on the door three times. No one answered. They yelled out “this is the police. Is anyone home?” still no answer. They busted through the door and searched the house. Three of the officers got in a line and went upstairs. They had their guns pointed straight ahead. They opened Allison's bedroom door. She was gone, along with most of her belongings. They searched the room and found nothing, until they searched her closet. Everyone’s jaws dropped. On the floor was Lydia's head, and the floor was covered with blood. Lydia's brains, along with her eyeballs were scooped out and her tongue was chopped off. About 3 weeks later the police finally found Allison at an old abandoned house. She had killed herself and only left a letter admitting to killing Lydia. The letter said “Lydia deserved it” and that she “hoped Lydia's parents saw Lydia's cold dead body”. The coroner was on his way to pick up Allison’s body to take to the morgue. Lydia's parents came to the scene. Lydia's mom couldn't keep it in anymore. She was sobbing. Her eyes filled with tears. She screamed at Allison’s body “She was my little girl!” “Why did you take her from me?!”. Lydia's mom knew Lydia didn't deserve this. Lydia was so special. She could brighten anyone’s day just by being in the same room. She was loved by so many people. Lydia had her whole life ahead of her. Lydia's mom fell to the ground crying. Lydia's father held her tight and started crying as well. Her dad never told her he loved her as much as he should have. He remembered holding his baby girl in his arms. Lydia's parents loved her more than anything in the world. Nothing would be the same without Lydia, and everyone knew that.
