The Mission of Northridge High School We at Northridge High School will provide all students with rigorous, relevant, educational opportunities that will enable them to reach their potential and be responsible, productive citizens. III. Course Description & Standards: This full year course is designed to teach students components of sports medicine including the exploration of therapeutic careers. Students will be able to understand and apply medical terminology and abbreviations, identify the anatomy and physiology of the human body, become familiar with basic C.P.R., first aid, injury prevention, the healing process, rehabilitation techniques, therapeutic modalities, nutrition, and sports psychology. Student are eligible to earn 3 credits of CE credit from Weber State University upon successful completion: (Athletic Training 2175: Introduction to Sports Medicine). Students will review anatomy and physiology as it applies to the prevention and care of injuries. Student will be able to administer first aid/CPR. Student will apply injury prevention principles. Student will describe the injury and healing process Student will explain and administer therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation techniques. 8. Students will explore various aspects of sport nutrition. 9. Student will describe principles of sport psychology. 10. Students will differentiate and examine performance enhancement philosophies. To enroll as a Weber State University Concurrent Enrollment Student you will need: 1. Social Security Number 2. Driver’s License 3. VISA/MASTERCARD/DISCOVERCARD with a valid Expiration date 4. This pays for the class from Weber State - $45.00 IV. Grading Policies and Practices: Grades are calculated according to the total possible points each term, this course is a yearlong course therefore the points will accumulate to the final grade at the end of the year. 1. Attendance/Participation: 10% of overall grade. CE credit from WSU requires 90% attendance per term. There will be given 10 points per day for class participation. If you are tardy you will automatically lose half of these points. Students will earn participation points for being prepared for class and involved in each class session. 2. Assignments/Projects: 30% overall grade. 3. Tests/Quizzes: 30% of overall grade 4. Performance Skill Testing: 30% of overall grade. Students must effectively demonstrate a variety of performance skills with a minimum competency requirement. 5. Career and Technology Education: This course meets the requirements of the Career and Technology Education program of the Utah State Office of Education. Students who successfully complete this course and pass the year end comprehensive online skills test with an 80% or higher will receive high school CTE credit and a completion certification. 6. Late work: late work will be accepted up to one class period late for HALF credit 7. Make-up: All missed work while a student was absent MUST be made up and is the responsibility of the student to contact me to get missed work. Make-up work will only be accepted for excused absences and must be completed within a week of returning to class. Make-up quizzes and/or tests will be scheduled at lunch or before school. 8. Extra Credit/Professional Points: Up to 50 points may be earned each term through a variety of teacher determined options. 9. Grading Scale: A C+ D- 93-100% 77-79% 60-62% AC F 90-92% 73-76% Below 60% B+ C- 87-89% 70-72% B D+ 83-86% 67-69% BD 80-82% 63-66% V. Citizenship Policy: · · · · Citizenship will reflect the student’s character. Students are to arrive on time for class, be prepared, and stay on task. Three unexcused absences, four tardies, or extreme negative behavior will result in a “U” citizenship grade. Any type of stealing, cheating, plagiarism or use of profane language will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic “U.” Northridge High School dress code will be followed and enforced as outlined in your student handbook. Northridge High School Exercise Science: Sports Medicine Course Disclosure and Policy Statement Verification The course disclosure and class policies and procedure statements are provided to inform students and his/her parents or guardians about the Exercise Sciences: Sports Medicine program at Northridge High School. These procedures and regulation have been developed to assure consistency in program administration, grading, and course implementation. The student in the Exercise Science: Sports Medicine class will be responsible for fulfilling all requirements of the program, and complying with the administrative procedures outlined in the class syllabus and policies and procedures statement. Also, with you permission, I will occasionally have students in the class correct the work of other students. This practice has an important educational purpose that allows students to review assignments and quizzes, and consider problem solving strategies that may be different from their own. It also allows the teacher to give and review assignments, and correct assignments as effectively as possible.
