Student Online Workbook: Pathways to Algebra II, Second Edition by Marilyn Carlson and Alan
O’Bryan and Kacie Joyner. www.rationalreasoning.net
Course Overview and Rational: This course is designed to build on algebraic and geometric
concepts. It develops advanced algebra skills such as systems of equations, advanced polynomials,
complex numbers, quadratics, and concepts that include the study of trigonometric functions. The
content of this course are important for students’ success on the ACT, SAT, and college mathematics
entrance exams. Students who complete Algebra II should take Pre-Calculus next.
Why Do I Need Algebra?
Math is an opportunity gateway and you can't get to higher math without taking algebra. Algebra
develops your thinking, specifically logic, patterns, problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning.
The more math you have, the greater the opportunity for jobs in engineering, actuary, physics,
programming etc. Higher math is often an important requirement for entrance to college or universities.
Prerequisites, Calculator: In order to successfully complete Honors Algebra 2, you should have earned
a grade of “C” or better in Honors Geometry. If you received a score less than a C, you will be dropped
from this course. You will need a bring paper, pencil, and a graphing calculator daily. It is
helpful to have a scientific calculator as well since you will not be allowed to use a graphing
calculator on some assessments. A 3 ring math binder is also required. Numerous handouts and
activities will be given throughout the year. You are highly encouraged to have a graphing
calculator (preferably TI 84 Plus)
Grades: The only grades that will be on your permanent transcripts are your semester grades, not the
nine-week grades. Prior to the final exam, your grade will be determined by the following:
Assessments/Projects
Homework/Classwork/Participation
70%
30%
FYI: The final exam is cumulative and is 20% of the entire semester grade.
Your grades will be based on the following scale:
100-90% = A
89.9-80% = B
79.9-70% = C
Required Materials:
Math Workbook/Homework DAILY
TI- 83 or TI – 84 graphing calculator
Math Notebook (3-ring binder)
69.9-60% = D
Paper
Graph paper
Colored Pen
59.9-0% = F
Pencil and pen (blue or black ink)
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be respectful to yourself, your peers, and your instructor.
2. Be on time and here for class every day! CHS attendance and tardy policy will be followed.
3. Be prepared for class.
4. Have a positive attitude.
5. Use your class time wisely.
Hall Passes: There is a sign out sheet located in the front of the room. You are to get permission from
me first, then sign the sheet and take the hall pass. You must have this pass with you while you are out
of my class. If you abuse this privilege, you will no longer be able to leave the classroom during class
time.
Warm-ups: Students will earn class participation points for completing warm-ups in class. Warm-ups
cannot be made up. Students that are late to class (with a pass) or absent will not earn these class
participation points. In other words, students must be present to earn these points.
Homework: Students are expected to turn in their homework assignments on time. Late assignments
will result in a loss of credit. You MUST show all work in order to receive credit on their assignments.
If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to hand in any previously assigned work and get
any missed work. If you are going on a field trip, you’ll need to get the work before you leave. Field
trips do not excuse you from completing assignments on time. Furthermore, if an absence is unexcused,
students will not receive credit for that day.
Learning Reflections: Research has shown that when students go back and reflect on the learning
process, the concepts learned can be moved from short to long-term memory, better study skills can be
developed, and an honest self-assessment of learning can be done. Additionally, many employers require
employees to provide a written report of their progress, issues, concerns, and accomplishments. In this
spirit, you will be required to provide "Learning Reflection" e-mail or typed after each exam. Below is a
sample of the format to be used and a sample response from a hypothetical student. Please note: I am
asking that each of you give a quantitative score for your personal growth. Please take time to really
think about your effort and overall performance for the particular chapter in which you are writing
your reflection.
Tests & Quizzes: A test will be given at the end of each unit. Approximately 5 or 6 tests will be given
each semester. The number of quizzes for each unit will vary depending upon the length of each unit.
NO TEST OR QUIZ RETAKES WILL BE ALLOWED.
To be fair to all individuals, students who miss a scheduled test or quiz day will be expected to make up
that particular exam in a timely manner. Immediately after missing the scheduled exam (the first day
back to school after being absent), the student will make live contact (in person – no voice mail, no email, no handwritten notes) with the instructor to schedule a make-up exam. Failure to make this
contact with the instructor may result in a loss of points on the exam. The instructor will then assign an
appropriate date (within two days) for the exam to be made up. In addition, your instructor reserves
the right to give an alternative assessment.
Any student caught with a cell phone in their possession during a test or quiz will receive a 0 on
that test or quiz.
Attendance: Parents, please remember to call the attendance office at 480-812-7703 to excuse your
son/daughter when they are absent from class. Failure to call the attendance office within 24 hours of
an absence will result in an unexcused absence (Late Call).
Tardiness/Unexcused Absences: Tardiness and unexcused absences will not be tolerated!
Administration, faculty, and security will be sweeping students who are not in class on time. If you are
caught in the sweep, it is your responsibility to turn in your homework to the proctor. If I do not
receive it, you will not get credit for it. If you are caught in the sweep and an assignment is given, it is
your responsibility to check with a classmate and get all relevant notes or examples from the day you
missed before the next class. If you are caught in the sweep and you missed a quiz or a test, you must
make up the quiz/test after school the same day in Mrs. Sanders’s classroom or your test grade will
result in a zero. You must show up to Room 404 right at the end of the school day to take the quiz/test.
*If you have been ‘swept’ more than three times your make-up work will not be accepted.
Final Exam Exemption Policy:
All students will take Final Exams. Students who have no more than 4 absences (one tardy or
sweep counts as one absence) in the class and a grade of 75% or higher, and who are present in
class on the final exam day, may choose whether or not to have the final exam calculated into
their grade. This policy does not apply to courses which may require final exams, including
but not limited to IB, AP, and Dual Enrollment classes.
Tutoring: TBD

To be a successful student: use time wisely, take detailed complete notes and use them, ask questions as
soon as you don’t understand the material, and be an active learner/participant.
I have received, read, understood, and intend to comply with the requirements and procedures of this
course. I especially understand that it is the student’s responsibility to do his or her own work for this
course.
