Advanced Registered Nurse Competencies
Introduction
This evaluation tool has been developed by the Education and Professional Development
Subcommittee of the Australian Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses Inc.
The Competency Standards for the Advanced Registered Nurse form the basis of the tool.
These Standards were published by the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) in 2005.
To facilitate the use of those generic competencies in the Stomal Therapy Nursing context,
the fourteen (14) competency standards and the active statements about how nurses
demonstrate their competence have been examined to correlate them with the Standards of
Stomal Therapy Nursing Practice (2013). Since the competencies are broad statements
that must be used in a context-specific setting, it is envisaged that a variety of behaviours
may be used to verify a nurse’s ability to meet any competency standard.
The purpose of this tool is to guide self-assessment of current practice and is used to
demonstrate how the advanced Stomal Therapy Nurse meets the Standards of Stomal
Therapy Nursing Practice. The tool is used and submitted with the reflective journal of
episodes of practice for the purpose of recredentialing advanced or expert Stomal Therapy
Nurses.
Applicants are required to use this tool to self-evaluate their reflective journal and identify
where they have demonstrated a competency and met the required standard as indicated on
the following pages.
Recredentialing is achieved by demonstrating you have met all 14 competency standards
reflecting the three (3) ANF identified domains.
 Domain 1: Conceptualises practice
 Domain 2: Adapts practice
 Domain 3: Leads practice
However, the committee recognises that not all sub competencies / elements may be
applicable to your case scenario(s) but you should aim to demonstrate a minimum of 80 %
of the total sixty eight (68) elements.
Standards of Stomal Therapy Nursing Practice
STANDARD 1: PROFESSIONAL ROLE AND DEVELOPMENT
The Stomal Therapy Nurse assumes responsibility for a high level of nursing practice
through evaluation, reflection, continuing education, professional development and
research, and contributes to professional growth of others.
STANDARD 2: COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CARE
The Stomal Therapy Nurse establishes and maintains communication processes in
professional relationships.
STANDARD 3: CLINICAL BEST PRACTICE
The Stomal Therapy Nurse provides comprehensive, accurate and systematic evidencebased nursing care with professional autonomy in any practice setting.
STANDARD 4: EDUCATION AND HEALTH PROMOTION
The Stomal Therapy Nurse assists individuals, significant others and communities to
achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education and promotion.

Guidelines for using this Competency Evaluation Tool
Process
 The participant must become familiar with the Competency Standards for the
Advanced Registered Nurse (2005) (available from ANF in each state), Standards of
Stomal Therapy Nursing Practice (2013), and this Evaluation Tool prior to its use
 Your reflective journal may comprise a complex scenario / case study or several less
complex case studies and episodes of practice
 Write your “story” with as much detail as required, clearly relating the behaviour/s you
consider demonstrate the elements of the competencies. At the end of each paragraph
in your story, identify each of the elements of the competencies you meet. Transcribe
the page / paragraph number to the self assessment column of the Tool eg 1 / 9
(remember that any one detail may meet more than one element or competency)
 Include both your personal and professional educational activities as appropriate
 Consider as wide a selection of opportunities for your journal and self-assessment as
possible. A limit of 2 000 – 3 000 words applies
 The self-assessment process promotes reflective practice relevant to these
competencies in a Stomal Therapy Nursing context
 The Competency Evaluation Tool is to be completed in a confidential environment
 This completed Tool must accompany your reflective journal for verification

Please retain a copy of your self-assessment and reflective journal
 On completion, please forward by the 1st of September to:
