Hands-On Gastrointestinal Motility Training Course
AIM OF THE COURSE:
Recent years have seen important advances in the clinical investigation and treatment of patients
with gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility, functional GI diseases and continence problems. As a result
there is also increasing demand from clinical fellows and young investigators for knowledge and
training in this area of medicine. This course will address this need by bringing small groups
together with experts in the field to gain experience with a wide range of techniques used in the
assessment of GI function and to discuss their application in swallowing difficulties, reflux
symptoms, continence problems and other functional GI diseases. At the end of the course,
participants will have received practical training in:
1) Application and Analysis of key technologies including esophageal high-resolution manometry
(HRM), pH-impedance reflux studies, anorectal HRM and continence function tests for
constipation and incontinence. The position of new technologies will also be discussed.
2) Classification-diagnosis of dysmotility, functional GI disorders and continence problems based
on clinical presentation and findings of physiological investigation
3) Management of motility, functional GI disorders and continence problems
Interactive elements: Participants will be divided into small groups; 5 participants each room.
Each room supervised by one Faculty and one technician. Each session will begin with a short
didactic introduction. The rest of the time is dedicated to hands-on training. For training in analysis
each attendee will have a personal computer and guidance by the faculty. Trainees will be
expected to bring and present cases from their own practice for discussion at the meeting.
Organiser: The Course is organized by the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and
Motility (ESNM) in association with the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and Turkish
Society of Gastroenterology (TSG) and supported by an educational grant from UEG.
