THE GREAT OUTDOORS Come learn about all of the fun outdoor activities right in our back yard! Participants will learn about canoeing, knot tying, camping, cooking and other fun outdoor fun. Don’t forget the wet and wild water activities either, students will learn water safety, laws and be introduced to fishing. If possible you can cook your own “vittles” over an open flame, while learning about proper camping techniques. Speakers from various state agencies will also present to participants. FITNESS FOR LIFE Want to shape up? Want to design a healthy exercise plan for your individual needs? This class is for you! You will set fitness goals, and design your own plan to achieve these goals. Activities will include walking, crossfit training, Zumba, weight training and cycling! Learn how to monitor your fitness with the latest technology also. Get outside and get in shape, this class is for the anyone wanting to tone up and get fit! MATH GAMES AND PROBLEM SOLVING Want to learn how to solve the Rubik’s Cube mathematically? Want to explore the math algorithms of the Tower of Hanoi? Do you like to solve puzzles? This is YOUR class! Students will the algorithms behind various math puzzles which lead to the ultimate math game! GEOCACHING! Compete with other teams to find the hidden caches in Gowrie and other communities. Need your own Rubik’s Cube, and a $10 app for your Android/iPhone is recommended. DO YOU SPEAK AMERICAN? Why do we behave like we do? Explore the impact language has on our behavior in this class. Learn about other cultures such as African American, Hispanic and other cultures. Field trips will help to explain the importance of language in our beliefs. Speakers will also present firsthand knowledge of their cultural beliefs. Learn about yourself and others as you delve into language, culture and your beliefs. CAREER EXPLORATION This class is designed for juniors. Get a jump start on the career you want to learn more about in this course. Learn on the job tips, interviewing skills, resume writing and how apply for that career you always dreamed of! Students will participate in job shadowing, internships and gain knowledge about the work force. Field trips will include visits to employers, and Workforce Development. You want to get a “jump start” on your career? This course if for you! LET’S PLAY BAND! Have you always wanted to learn to play some music? Then this course is for you, designed to help the beginning musician learn the basics, this course will show your musical talents! All you need is a couple of bucks and you’ll be playing music like never before! Like concerts? The plan is to attend a concert in the area during May term. So grab your love of music and get in this class! PULL! TREBUCHET AND CATAPULTS! Like to design things? Like seeing things hurled through the air? Interested in a little engineering and a little medieval history? Take this course! Students will design a medieval catapult, called a trebuchet, and compete against others to see who has the best design. Learn the strategies of medieval warfare and watch things go soaring through the air. PULL! RUBE GOLDBER MACHINES This course will allow the student to showcase their talents in designing simple machines that do complicated tasks. Like to create things? Are you curious by nature as to how things operate? Then this is the class you need! Compete against other teams in design principles and making simple machines to the most amazing things! THE GREAT AMAZING RACE Like to solve mysteries? Are you interested in competing against others in this course that will test your problem solving, team work and knowledge of clues from the local community? Get enrolled in this course then. This game of honor and integrity will test your ability to discover hidden resources in the community, and allow you learn many interesting things about the town you live in. You will be outside in this course, and represent the school while trying to “win” the race. This AMAZING class will be one you remember as you explore our community. LIFEGUARDING This class is designed to train and prepare students for the operations and requirements to manage the Gowrie Municipal Pool. The class will include basic expectations of lifeguards, and the use of various machines at the pool. In addition, students will learn how to maintain the inventory of food products, testing waters, and cleaning the pool. Selected students will take this class. JAGUAR PRIDE Like to paint? Want to leave a lasting impression on Southeast Valley High School? This class will delve into the history of murals, the techniques used to paint murals, the design principles of creating a mural and finally will culminate with painting a Jaguar mural in the gymnasium. Show your school pride and help paint a legacy for others to see! SCHOOL OF ROCK Elvis Presley? The Beatles? The Who? Who? How about the 60s rock movement? Want to learn all about these things and many more? Take this class and study the origins of rock and roll. Learn about the historical significance of certain music. Write your own rack anthem and perform for others in the competitive ROCK OFF at the end of the course! THE HOLOCAUST AND ITS RELEVANCY TO 2015 What impact can one person have on society? How can you impact those around you? This class will allow you to investigate how the Holocaust occurred, and the impact it has on today’s world. Students will work through simulations that allow the student to learn about themselves in situations that are applicable to everyday life. This class will impact you and how you view others and treat others. PHOTOGRAPHY AND DESIGN Students in this class will learn the basics of taking extraordinary pictures, and the design principles behind the pictures. Learn how photography worked in the past and the improvements that have been throughout history. You will need a digital camera of your own, and access to download your pictures. Start your personal photography portfolio in this class! SMILE YOU’RE ALL IN THE PICTURE! PAY IT FORWARD How can you help your community thrive and prosper? Do you have to be well known? Rich? Can one person really make a difference? Absolutely you can make a difference. This class will help to appreciate the efforts of local people who do so much to help the communities of Southeast Valley. Guest speakers, field trips and other community based projects will show you how you can help your communities prosper! LANDSCAPE DESIGN Do you enjoy love working outdoors? Do you love to work with plants and designing landscaping? This class will give you an introduction to landscaping business, while you learn about the principles of design, including color, texture, scale and balance. You will create landscaping project and how to care your own property. Help beautify your property and learn a skill for life! BON JOUR! FRENCH CULTURE ALIVE! This class designed for students who have had French I, will explore the foods, sights, sounds, art, and French culture. Like to eat? How about trying croque monsieurs? Taka a field trip to view French artwork, learn games played by French students and learn a romance language. You will indulge in French pastries, and French culture, and feel like you are actually in PARIS! PLANNING YOUR FUTURE This class is designed for juniors interested in exploring college options. This class will help you weigh your options when looking at post-secondary schools. You will take field trips to many colleges in the state, and examine the costs of attendance, including meals, room and board the campus activities and dorm life. Not sure what to do after your graduation? This class will help answer many of those questions for you. PARTY IN THE USA! What goes into hosting an NCAA basketball tournament? How hard is to plan a wedding? Is a career in hospitality in my future? Take this course and find the answer to these questions and many more! Speakers will show you the immense possibilities for a career in this area. Field trips will add to the excitement. Plan your own event and understand the hospitality business. VIDEO GAME UNIVERSITY Are you a gamer? Do you love XBOX? Have you ever thought you could design a game that is better than a company’s? Take this class and prove it. This course will allow you to make your own video game, complete with characters, video game platform and plot. You will need to have laptop skills, but what GAMER doesn’t it? Come show your video game expertise!
