BUBBLE GUM LAB REPORT
Background: Mostly everyone has chewed bubble gum at least one time in their life. Bubble
gum is made of a substance called chicle that is mixed with sugar and flavorings. Bubble gum is
stretchy because it is rubber like. Bubble gum can be very fun to chew because you can blow
bubbles. There are many varieties of bubble gum flavors in the store. Ever wonder how much
percent of composition sugar is in bubble gum?
Hypothesis: If the gum Double Bubble is more sugary like when you chew it than Wringers
gum then Wringers will have less sugar because it has a less sugar flavor when you chew it.
Procedures:
1. Obtain a piece of wrapped bubble gum. Determine the mass of the gum (with the
wrapper on.)
2. Remove the wrapper and chew the bubble gum until all the sugar has been “swallowed”.
(about 3-4 minutes)
3. Find the mass of the wrapper while you are chewing, but don’t throw it away.
4. Return the chewed gum to the wrapper and find the mass. (gum absorbs a tiny amount of
water, so it is not necessary to dehydrate it or wait unit it dries).
Materials: gum, balance, graph paper
Results: We repeated the procedures for each gum three times to make sure we had good data
results.

Actual amount of sugar for Double Bubble was 83.3%
Actual amount of sugar for Wringers was 74.1%
Analysis: My hypothesis was correct because Wringers’ gum had less sugar than Double
Bubble.
1) Compare your groups % composition sugar to the class mean and median.
Should they be close in value? Explain (why or why not?)
The median and the mean should be close in value to show that we did the lab
correct and got good data results.
2) In this experiment is the mean or median better to use for reporting your
class data?
The mean is better to use for reporting the class data because
it gives you a better idea of what your data is or results.
3) What is the molar mass of sugar C12H22O11?
The molar mass is 45 g/mole.
4) Calculate the percentage error of your experimental value.
5) % E =
(experimental value – true value )
x 100
Percent error for Double Bubble: -9.7%
Percent error for Wringers: -8.2%
Conclusion: In this lab I learned how to calculate bubble gum’s percent
sugar. I also learned how much sugar Double Bubble and Wringers gum
contains. I enjoyed doing this lab because I got to chew gum in the lab
for the first time ever since it is probated. I learned that Double Bubble
gum has more sugar than Wringers gum.
