Poetry Out Loud Poem: Theme Paper
Literature and Society
Lee-Chin
All poems teach us something about the human condition. For example “Those Winter Sundays”
suggests that often times in youth, we fail to have empathy for our parents. Other poems, such as “The
Forth Wise Man” seems to assert that man might be better off staying put rather than always expending
energy on some kind of quest. Whatever your poem might be, it has something to say as literature
about society and the human condition. Your job is to identify one big theme, like the examples I’ve
given you above, phrase it as a thesis statement and then prove that thesis using textual evidence.
This is your first writing. It will allow me to see exactly where you are at in terms of how you write.
Please make this your best effort demonstrating everything you can remember about good writing such
as writing a thesis, topic sentences, and supporting your ideas by using textual evidence. Your paper
should be one, typed page, double-spaced, 12 point font. It is due at the end of the day tomorrow,
Friday, February 10. Good luck!
