17th Sunday in Ordinary
Time
“There is a boy here who has
five barley loaves and two
fish; but what good are these
for so many?”
- John 6:9
The miracle of the Loaves
and Fishes is the only
miracle which is recorded
six times in the Gospel. It
carries
two
important
messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have
enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and
do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him.
The story of the multiplications of the loaves and the fishes is a
familiar one, and has many lessons, not least of which is how
our willingness to share who we are and what we have –
exercising good stewardship – releases God’s power and
bountifulness on the world and its people. Do we realize that
there is enough for all if we are willing to share? Are we aware
that God is at work when we share our money and our other
resources in His name?

A PARENTING POINTER
By Susan Vogt
July 26 (today) is Parent's
Day. We don't need another
card or gift giving holiday,
but honoring the effort that parents
make in raising children is important.
Don't buy anything today, but ask your
children what they think is the hardest
part about being a parent? Listen.

Sts. Joachim and Anne
Feast Day – July 26
By tradition Joachim and Anne are
considered to be the names of the parents of
Mary, the Mother of God. It was the parents
of Mary who nurtured Mary, taught her,
brought her up to be a worthy Mother of
God. It was their faith that laid the foundation
of courage and strength that allowed her to
respond to God’s call as well as stand by the
cross as her son was crucified and still
believe.
Sometimes called the “feast of grandparents”,
it reminds grandparents of their responsibility
to establish a tone for generations to come:
They must make the traditions live and offer
them as a promise to little children. But the
feast has a message for the younger
generation as well. It reminds the young that
older people’s greater perspective, depth of
experience and appreciation of life’s
profound rhythms are all part of a wisdom
not to be taken lightly or ignored.
“...[T]he family is the foundation of society.
In it the various generations come together
and help one another to grow wise and to
harmonize personal rights with the other
requirements of social life” (Vatican II,
Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the
Modern World, 52).

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prayers of the Faithful
Presider:
My friends, we who have gathered here to be fed in this
Eucharist remember and pray for all who need to be
nourished in any way.
Minister:
For the church: that it may grow in its identity as a
eucharistic people ... we pray to the Lord,
That the Eucharist may be available to all Catholic Christians
throughout the world...we pray to the Lord,
For the oppressed and suffering across the earth who are
starved for food, for peace, for justice, for dignity and
equality ... we pray to the Lord,
For those who work to combat hunger through public policies
and advocacy, through programs and systems, through
philanthropy and individual generosity ... we pray to the
Lord,
For those who work directly to feed others: for farmers and
grocers, cooks and dieticians, gardeners and restaurateurs ...
we pray to the Lord,
For care and protection of the environment that provides food
for the whole world ... we pray to the Lord,
For areas where there is drought or flooding and for the just
distribution of water ... we pray to the Lord,
For the hungry and needy among us; for the sick and dying;
for those who have died ...
… (Saturday, St. Charles) especially Linda Baumert,
… (Sunday, St. Charles) especially Keith Murphy,
… (Sunday, St. Leo) Pause;
... we pray to the Lord,
Presider
God of power and promise, you have fed your people
throughout the ages in word and deed. You feed us at the
eucharistic table and call us to be mindful of all who are
hungry. Grant us the grace to be worthy of this calling and to
feed others as you feed us. We pray in the name of your Son,
Jesus, who gives himself to us in bread and wine. Amen.
