The role supports the Financial Controller in delivering on the University’s responsibilities in the areas of tax, financial and statutory accounting and reporting.

Activity:
Examples of role specific activity include:
Line management of the Payroll and Treasury functions.
Assistance in the preparation of cashflow forecasting and projections and funding requirements.
Assistance in preparation of consolidated statutory financial statements.
Preparation of subsidiary statutory statements.
Leading the month end process including management of control accounts, accruals and prepayments, journal preparation and analytical review of income and expenditure.
Assisting in the provision of financial accounting technical guidance.
Leading the review and update of the Financial Procedures and Financial Regulations relating to the University.
Coordination of all tax matters including but not limited to Direct Tax, Employment Tax, international tax matters and VAT compliance including ensuring timely submission of quarterly VAT returns, EC sales list and annual Partial Exemption adjustments for VAT.
External reporting including HESA, OSCR, SFC and National Statistics working with the Finance
Systems team as required.
Reconciliation of intercompany accounting.
Working with the Finance Systems team carry out project work as required implementing systems to ensure compliance with financial regulations, University policy and procedure.
Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders all levels in the
University and being responsive to the needs of the University community at all times.
Preparation of Executive Board, Company Board and Committee papers as required.
Attend and represent the finance function at University Committee’s and project boards, as required.
Examples of generic activity include:
Support Head of Department in leading the department towards achieving the University’s mission.
In consultation with other senior members of the department, assist with preparing the departmental plan.
Lead, manage, develop and motivate the support/administration team.
Be an active member of the Department Management Group and other key School/University committees.
Liaising with staff at all levels internally, representing the department on University groups, contributing to developments within the institution.
Discharging delegated financial responsibility, with financial authorisation.
Working closely with the School Management Groups to manage the administration of University procedures.
Manage the support for departmental involvement in University activity.
Responsible for the management, implementation and compliance with Health and Safety regulations, standards and processes within your area of responsibility and control.
Any other tasks appropriate to the post and in line with School/Department business needs.

Grade 8 is expected to take the lead in the setting of administrative standards and in ensuring conformity with University and departmental policies across the wide range of activities in which the department engages. As such the post holder will need to exercise considerable initiative and facilitate the spread of good professional practice. The post routinely requires the ability to take independent action within the agreed parameters of delegation and the ability to liaise and negotiate with staff at all levels across the University and externally. The emphasis is very much on developing and sustaining a professional administrative ethos.

This may include reacting to requests for information or advice, actively offering or promoting the services of the institution to others and setting the overall standards of service offered.

This element includes the impact of decisions within the institution and externally. This may include decisions which impact on one’s own work or team, decisions which impact across the institution and decisions which could have significant impact in the longer term within or outside the institution.
