Volume and Measurement Test
Name:______________________________________
The following questions are asking you to determine the board feet in a standing tree. Complete
the chart below for each of the three scenarios. Include units and always show your work.
1. Use the number provided in the chart.
2. Bob and Joe walk up to tree number 1. Bob measures around the tree and determines that it is 4.5 feet around. Joe takes
a second measurement just to be sure that they are doing this accurately, he gets 60 inches. They are satisfied with
their two measurements. Joe paces off 60 feet so that he can get a good look at the tree and uses his ruler to judge the
height. After lining up the ruler with the correct spots on the tree, him and Bob determine that the 1inch mark on the
ruler was 3.25 feet on the tree. They switch jobs and this time determine that the 1 inch mark on the ruler was 3.75 feet
on the tree. Now the two sit down to determine the number of board feet they will get after harvesting this tree!
3. Dan and Anne walk up to tree number 1. Dan measures around the tree and determines that it is 84 inches around.
Anne takes a second measurement just to be sure that they are doing this accurately, she gets 99 inches. They figure
that those numbers are too far apart so they take a third measurement, 95 inches. They are satisfied with their
circumference measurements now. Dan paces off 120 feet so that he can get a good look at the tree and uses his ruler to
judge the height. After lining up the ruler with the correct spots on the tree, him and Dan determine that the 1inch mark
on the ruler was 5.25 feet on the tree. They switch jobs and this time determine that the 1 inch mark on the ruler was
63 inches on the tree. Now the two sit down to determine the number of board feet they will get after harvesting this
tree!

The following questions are about determining the correct spot on a tree to measure DBH
(diameter at breast height). Read the questions carefully and use complete sentences to
answer.
1. Place an X on the side of the tree that you would stand when taking a DBH measurement. Why would you
choose to stand on the side of the tree? What difference would it make if you stood on the other side?
2. If the line to the right of the tree is at 4.5 feet, where would you measure this tree for the most accurate
reading? Explain your answer.
3. Looking at the tree below, where would you measure the DBH? Explain your answer.
Remember the line is at 4.5 feet. (Hints: this tree splits into two and it does not grow
perfectly straight)
The following questions are about determining the amount of cubic inches and board feet in various
pieces of saw lumber. Complete the chart below for the different scenarios. Include units and always

The following questions are about determining the amount of cubic feet and cords in various piles of
pulpwood. Complete the chart below for the different scenarios. Include units and always show your
work.
1. Mr. Jones has cut more firewood than he needs for the winter and would like to sell some to
your family. He charges $120 a cord. You need to determine how many cords of wood is there
so you know how much a fair price would be. The stacked pile measures 8 feet tall by 24 feet
long. Mr. Jones cuts his wood into 3.5 feet long pieces. How many cubic feet are in this pile?
How many cords of wood is the pile? How much would you have pay for it?
2. Assume that each square is 1 foot by 1 foot and that the logs are 8 feet long. How many cubic
feet are in this pile? How many cords is this pile?
