 To do this we are going to be using a document known as a Check

Register.

 Today’s focus is on withdrawals and debits or as it says on your sheet

“Payment”

 What do you think needs to be done to balance your account?

 All you need to do is subtract the payment from the balance.

 Today, you are going to plan a large family meal and you need to go buy what you need.

 You are going to plan out your meal that have the following requirements:

 The meal must include enough food to feed at least 8 people

 The meal should include at least 3 side dishes (such as mashed potatoes, corn bread, etc.), one main course (such as a Turkey, Ham, etc.), and two different desserts.

Don’t forget to include any toppings that may need to be used.

You can only buy items that you are old enough to buy.

 Once you have selected your item(s) from one location, a group member needs to add them up and act as a cashier in running the purchase and processing a check.

Group members who do this need to put their initials next to the math and total

 Remember there is a 6% sales tax to add on

 Lastly, record your transactions in the Check Register.

 This packet and activity is a project grade for this class.

A Reality Town Preparation Lesson

Have your desks cleared off except your packet from yesterday, pencil, calculator, and scratch paper.

 How to write a check

 Deposits (credits)

 Payments/withdrawals (debits… think of debit card)

 Record all your transactions in the Check Register.

 This is a project grade. Take it seriously. It is due today before you leave.

 Finish your family meal planning and spending before beginning today’s activity.

 To do this we are going to be using a document known as a Check

Register.

 Today’s focus is on both Withdrawals and Deposits or as it says on your sheet “Payments” and Deposit.

 After yesterday’s lesson, what do you think we do with a deposit to a balance?

 Over drafting an account can cost a lot of money in extra fees and lead to you writing

“bad” checks.

 If you continually write “bad” checks, then you can get into serious legal troubles.

 Companies may begin to refuse to allow you to purchase items when you use a check/debit card.

 You need to make sure that you are not being overcharged by businesses you shop at.

 If there is a problem in your funds you can accurately show what happened to the money and compare with a banker, maybe even getting money back.

 Today, you are going to plan for gifts that you are going to give and you need to go buy what you need.

 You are going to plan for gifts that have the following requirements:

 You need to buy at least 6 gifts for friends and family.

 None of these gifts can be the same and NO, you can’t just buy gift cards

 Once you have selected your item(s) from one location, a group member needs to add them up and act as a cashier in running the purchase and processing a check.

Group members who do this need to put their initials next to the math and total

 Remember there is a 6% sales tax to add on

 I will come around to each group while you’re working and your group draws out a random event card that will either deposit money into your account or take money out of it.

 Groups who are on-task and doing good work may get a holiday bonus card.

 Groups who are not on-task or not performing well may get a fine.
