Sentence Length Activity
Directions: Write a series of sentences, using the same subject, starting with
“staccato” and progressing through “long.” Skip a line on your notebook paper
between each sentence. Make sure your sentences make grammatical sense!
Accurately and deliberately use punctuation!
• Staccato = one to two words, abrupt. Use the word “education” for this!!!
• Telegraphic = shorter than 5 words.
• Short = approx. 5-10 words.
• Medium = approx. 10-30 words.
• Long = 30 or more words.
What’s an essay?
In your journal, respond to the following prompts:
• Define “essay”
• How many essays do you think you’ve written in your
educational career? Give me a rough estimate.
• Identify 2-3 strengths you have in writing essays
• Identify 2-3 weaknesses you have in writing essays
• What is one writing specific goal you have for AP English this
year?
