US History Chapter 17 Assessment
Write a short paper (2-3 pages) explaining a need for reconstruction based on an event in recent
American history (since 2000). I don’t want to give examples because I don’t want everyone doing the
same 2-3 that I list, but if you have a question about finding an appropriate topic feel free to talk to me
or email me lkeehn@ne-hamilton.k12.ia.us.
Include information about the event, the actual plan for reconstruction, and the struggles faced due to
the proposed (or enacted) plan.
Develop your own plan for reconstruction (after the recent event)
Compare your plans to the issues faced in Reconstruction following the civil war.
You will have SOME class time to work on this.
You will need to turn in your paper and a list of ALL sources you used – this is best done in a Bibliography
or works cited page. You do not, at this time, have to use in text references, unless you are using a direct
quote, however you will need to include each of the sources you use on another piece of paper.
Students will use writeboard.com to perform peer critiques of the student plans for Reconstruction with
the caveat that the student doing the critiquing should take the point of view of a “Radical
Reconstructionist”. Following the peer critique, the original author must find a way to combine the two
plans and compromise in order to complete
