History
Relay For Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000 for the American Cancer
Society. Relay For Life was born.
It’s Extraordinary
Anyone who has stepped foot onto a track at Relay For Life has felt the impact that a single event can have on a community. Imagine, the power of nearly 5,000 communities across the nation united in a single cause.
It’s more than a fundraiser —Relay is the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life allows us to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, Remember those who have lost the battle and Fight Back against cancer.
Why 24 hours?
We are asking you to give a day out of your life for those who may not have another.
There are similarities between the Relay For Life and a cancer patient’s experience: It may get really hot during the day, and you may feel like quitting, but you keep on walking. It may get windy and cold at night, it might event rain, but, you press on through the darkest hours knowing that the sun will come up and it will be a new day. Cancer never sleeps, so for on day, neither do we.
It’s Nationwide and It’s Growing!
You are part of something BIG. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the largest annual not-for-profit fundraising event in the world. In 2009, more than 3 million Relay participants heard the messages of the American Cancer
Society in the United States, and the 500,000 survivors in attendance inspired us.
Nearly 5,000 communities held Relay For Life events here in the United
States and 23 foreign countries came aboard the Relay train as well.
The Time is Now!
The fight against cancer can’t wait or slow down even for one moment. We are making tremendous progress in our fight against cancer, but we will have a long way to go. Your involvement with the American Cancer Society is helping to save lives, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.
Together we’re saving lives and creating more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures and by fight back.
We are helping people stay well:
Since 2000, we have helped 400,000 tobacco users by offering one-on-one support and customized quit tools through the American Cancer Society’s telephone counseling service, Quitline.
We develop guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, and cancer screenings so you know what steps to take to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage.
We are helping people get well:
Our phone lines are open every minute of every day and every night for people needing answers.
Every year, we provide information, help and support to nearly one million people who call us at 1.800.227.2345.
We are a trusted resource for more than 23 million visitors to cancer.org each year who access the latest updates and news on cancer and listings of local programs and services
This year, we served nearly 41,000 patients in NY and NJ – more than ever before.
We are finding cures :
We have contributed to a 14 percent decrease in the cancer death rate since the early
1990s.
That means about 650,000 deaths were avoided and more birthdays were celebrated.
We’ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer breakthrough of the past century, such as confirming the link between cigarette smoking and cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple cancers, developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showing that mammography is the most effective way to detect breast cancer.
Last year, American Cancer Society-funded researcher Dr. Yibin Kang at Princeton
University discovered at gene responsible for breast cancer metastasis in up to 40 percent of cases. A treatment can now be developed to block this gene’s activity.
We are fighting back:
People who live in NY and NJ are protected by smoked free laws, thanks in part to the efforts of the Society and our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer
Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).
We are advocating for health care that is accessible, affordable, available and administratively simple
– so people are able to get the treatment they need, at a cost they can afford, through continuous coverage that they can easily understand.

Help us shed light on the fight …
Whether it’s a parent, a sibling, a friend or a neighbor, we all know someone who has been touched by cancer.
Relay For Life is one way of recognizing loved ones who are surviving cancer and remembering those who have lost the battle. At dusk, we quietly remember those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Luminaria bags line the track, each bearing the name of a loved one. This ceremony of light symbolizes the hope and courage with which we all continue to fight cancer. For a donation, you can remember someone who lost his or her battle to cancer, or honor someone winning the fight.
