Show Homeowners How
Proper Sealing and Insulation Help Save on Energy Bills
One small trip to your attic could lead to big energy savings
(Malvern, Pa.) – In houses across America, poorly sealed and under-insulated attics are taking
money out of homeowners’ pockets through high utility bills. To help homeowners take control
over high utility bills CertainTeed Corporation, North America’s leading brand of building
products, has teamed up with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY
STAR program for its Rule Your Attic! campaign.
Now in its second year, Rule Your Attic! is a fun, multi-media, consumer-focused outreach
campaign that utilizes the reach of social media to help homeowners understand the benefits of
properly sealing and insulating their attics and encourage action, either through DIY projects or
by working with a contractor. ENERGY STAR and CertainTeed have come together to provide
homeowners with the tools and resources they need to properly seal and insulate their homes.
“Most homeowners don’t realize how much money they are throwing away over something that
has such a simple solution,” said Doug Anderson, project manager of the ENERGY STAR Seal
and Insulate team. “Sealing up air leaks and adding insulation to recommended levels in the attic
or basement (or crawlspace) can save homeowners up to 10 percent on their annual utility
bills…even more than 10 percent if you live in a Northern climate.”
Homeowners can participate in the campaign by following these easy steps:

1.
Take that first step and go into your attic.
2.
Measure the insulation levels in the attic floor.
3.
Take a photo or shoot video of you while you’re measuring.
4.
Post photo or video on ENERGY STAR’s social media platforms, including Facebook,
Twitter and Pinterest. Use the #RuleYourAttic hashtag. You can also email your picture
or video to insulation@energystar.gov.
“According to the Harvard School of Public Health, more than 46 million U.S. homes lack
proper insulation,” said Liz McCarty, marketing communications manager for CertainTeed
Insulation. “This campaign shows just how easy it is to quickly pop up into your attic to see how
your own home measures up.”
As homeowners post photos, the EPA will offer customized advice through their own follow-up
posts in the comments section on Facebook and Pinterest, and also through replies on Twitter.
This feedback will encourage homeowners to make a decision about next steps—whether that’s
adding more insulation themselves, shopping for materials and products, or hiring a contractor.
ENERGY STAR is also providing additional sealing and insulation information and resources,
including “how-to” videos, infographics, and blogs, on its campaign web site and social media
accounts.
When considering insulation products, CertainTeed® InsulSafe® SP Attic Insulation is an
