Welcome to
Introduction to Communication!
The NUMBER 1 fear in the United States is PUBLIC SPEAKING! Most people are
more AFRAID of PUBLIC SPEAKING than DEATH! Our class will give you many
opportunities to overcome any fears about speaking in public while you build SELF
CONFIDENCE, INTERPERSONAL SKILLS, LISTENING SKILLS and SELF ESTEEM!
Course Description:
THEATRE ARTS I: INTRO TO COMMUNICATION
Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: None
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
INTRO TO COMMUNICATION introduces the student to basic public speaking techniques, discussion,
debates, communication theory, parliamentary procedures, oral interpretation and dramatic performance
concepts. Both formal and casual speechmaking assignments are part of the course of study. Reading and
critical thinking skills are also emphasized. Students will be required to have binder for speeches and
oral interpretation pieces.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1. Identify and explain the function of the communication elements: source, message,
channel, code, receiver, noise, feedback, and situation.
2. Define perception and explain how it relates to the communication process.
3. Explain obstacles to verbal communication.
4. Develop a plan to reduce fear of presenting.
5. Identify forms of nonverbal behaviors and cues.
Interpersonal Communication
6. Identify the ways to improve listening and explain how each method can help develop
better listening habits.
7. Describe how to increase the effectiveness of feedback.
8. Define and supply examples of open, closed, mirror, and probing interview questions.
9. Develop an organization for an information-gathering interview.
Public Communication
10. Identify the general purposes for speaking.
11. Develop a thesis by incorporating the general purpose and specific purpose.
12. Identify the components of an effective introduction, body, and conclusion.
13. Explain the various methods of supporting main points: analogy, contrast, explanation,
factual illustration, hypothetical illustration, series of specific instances, restatement,
statistics, and testimony.
14. Develop a proper outline to use in speaking extemporaneously.
15. Analyze one’s audience.
16. Locate and use support material found through library research.

18. Write responses to videos and speeches.
19. Develop and conduct an interview for the purpose of gathering information, improving
questioning skills, and heightening communication awareness.
20. Prepare and deliver a self-introduction around a quotation to introduce oneself.
21. Prepare and deliver a demonstration speech.
22. Prepare and deliver an informative speech.
23. Prepare and deliver a persuasive speech after submitting a detailed outline and
bibliography.

2 tournaments per semester.
