THE GOSPEL—IN THE KINGS
“There are, as we have seen, two everlasting covenants of promise
upon which the Kingdom of God is based—the one made with
Abraham, and the other with David. The former gives the land of
Canaan to their Seed forever; the latter, the kingdom and throne
established upon it…” Elpis Israel, pg 304
“David’s and Solomon’s reigns were typical, or representative, of
Christ’s reign”—Elpis Israel, pg 305
“The reader, then, will perceive from this exposition that the
Kingdom of God must be studied in two periods of its existence—in
the thousand years of the past, and in the thousand years of the
Age to Come”—Elpis Israel, pg 307 (Exo 19:6)
The Kingdom of the past is the Key to understand the
Gospel in relation to the Future Kingdom Age. Israel,
under the Kings was so styled: “The Kingdom of God”
The Things of the Kingdom
1Chr 28:5 “And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath
given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son
to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over
Israel”
2Ch 13:8 “And now ye think to withstand the kingdom
of the LORD IN THE HAND OF THE SONS OF DAVID…”
2Ch 9:8 “Blessed be the LORD thy God, which
delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king
for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel,
to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king
over them, to do judgment and justice”
Israel were Yahweh’s “Kingdom” and the one who assumed the
throne was His representative. Thus, only Christ could fulfill
this obligation to perfection!
The Name of Jesus Christ
1Ch 29:23 “Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD
as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and
all Israel obeyed him”
This was the promise of the David Covenant typically fulfilled. Of
course, the sure application is to Christ (Luke 1:30-35; Acts 2:29-35)
The Lord refers to both man as applicable to himself—
Mat 12:1-4 “Have ye not read what David did, when he
was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he
entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread,
which was not lawful for him to eat…”
Mat 12:42 “The queen of the south shall rise up in the
judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for
she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the
wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon
is here”
Christ called the “son of David”
1Ch 22:6-10 “Then he called for Solomon his son, and
charged him to build an house for the LORD God of
Israel. And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it
was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the
LORD my God: But the word of the LORD came to me,
saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made
great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name,
because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my
sight. Behold, A SON SHALL BE BORN TO THEE, who shall
be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his
enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon,
and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his
days. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall
be my son, and I WILL BE HIS FATHER; and I will establish
the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever”
Two Advents: A Man of War, Shed Blood—A Man of Peace, Rest
THE GOSPEL: THE KINGDOM AND THE KING
DAVID—a man of great adversity; within and without.
Saul, Absolom, Joab—Philistines, Amalek, Moabites…
• Jerusalem in bloodshed and controversy
SOLOMON—a man of peace and rest; enemies at
peace, friendly nations help build the Temple
• Jerusalem in peace, nations flow unto it
Peace in Solomon’s reign only possible because of David’s reign
1Ch 22:14 “Behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the
house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of
GOLD, and a thousand thousand talents of SILVER; and of
BRASS and IRON without weight; for it is in abundance:
timber also and stone have I prepared” (Dan 2) Metals
taken from nations in warfare (2Sam 9:10-11). Rep. the redeemed
of Christ from all peoples for Yahweh’s glory
David—Man of War, Shed Blood: Christ 1st Advent
We are introduced to David, like Joshua, as a man of war
“And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered
together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the
battle in array against the Philistines...And there went
out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines,
named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits
and a span” 1Sam 17:2-4
Elah—a strong tree. This is where the Lord destroyed Sin.
Champion—the one who has defeated every man opposing him
Goliah—to make naked, uncover. Reps. sin exposed
Six Cubits—number of flesh, man. This number is associated with
Goliath: Name appears 6 times in Scripture; 6 instruments of war;
6 fingers and 6 toes. Reps. flesh no man can defeat. Except One.
“The Philistines stood on a mountain on the one
side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other
side: and there was a valley between them…And he
had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was
armed with a coat of mail…a target of brass between
his shoulders…his spear's head weighed six hundred
shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went
before him” 1Sam 17:3-5-7
Brass/Iron—political and religious corruption (Dan 2)
Mountain—two opposing Kingdoms and systems (Dan 2).
Valley—where sin is destroyed. Armageddon (Rev 16)
The Gospel—there can be no Kingdom of God; the
Kingdom of Israel restored (Acts 1:7), unless Yahweh
provided a man to destroy the Champion, Sin!
• This battle was political and religious! “Gods” “Kingdom”
“(Goliath) stood and cried unto the armies of Israel,
and said unto them…choose you a man for you, and let
him come down to me. If he be able to fight with me,
and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I
prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our
servants, and serve us” 1Sam 17:8-9
The man capable of “prevailing” over Sin’s champion was not to
be found among Saul’s army! The man who would release Israel
for servitude of Sin was a man specially provided by Yahweh—
“David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight
sons…And David was the youngest…David went and
returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at
Bethlehem” 1Sam 17:12-15
Bethlehem—birthplace of the Lord Jesus Christ
Eight—number of circumcision, cutting off the flesh
Father’s Sheep—Yahweh’s people (Eze 34)
“Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy
brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren…and look
how thy brethren fare” 1Sam 17:17-18
The Lord Jesus Christ was sent by the Father for the benefit of his
brethren, who could not overcome the giant! John 3:16; Mat 1:21.
Thus, the Lord, sharing our nature, entered into the same battle as
his brethren. He was specifically sent by his Father (Heb 2:9-10)
Heb 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot
be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in
all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”
“And as he talked with them, behold, there came up
the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by
name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake
according to the same words: and David heard them.
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled
from him, and were sore afraid” 1Sam 17:23-24
The mightiest men of Saul’s army could not overcome Goliath.
Abraham, Noah, Paul, Job… “all have sinned…” (Rom 3:23):
except the shepherd sent by his father! The Lord alone “did not
sin” (1Pet 2:22; 2Cor 5:21). For this, Jesus was rewarded—
“The man who killeth him, the king will enrich him
with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and
make his father's house free in Israel” 1Sam 17:25
“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him…” Phi 2:9
“And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his
father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and
took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him,
and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and
when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard,
and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both
the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine
shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the
armies of the living God” 1Sam 17:34-36
The servant—son who gives his life for the father’s sheep is the
epitome of the Atonement: servitude to God and his brethren:
To love Yahweh with all thy heart, soul, mind and
strength; and to love thy neighbour as thyself “there is
none other commandment greater than these” Mk 12:30-31
“And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put
an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him
with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon
his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not
proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with
these; for I have not proved them. And David put them
off him” 1Sam 17:38-39
The Lord neither experienced fleshly thinking—brass upon his
head—nor fleshly actions to try to overcome the impulses of sin’s
flesh. Though he shared our nature, Jesus Christ:
“ceased from sin”—1Pet 4:1
“knew no sin”—2Cor 5:21
“put away sin by the sacrifice of himself”—Heb 9:26
“temped like as we are, yet without sin”—Heb 2:14
“condemned sin in the flesh”—Rom 8:3
“And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five
smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a
shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his
sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the
Philistine” 1Sam 17:40
Five Smooth Stones—the Law, Pentateuch, engraven in Stone
Shepherd’s bag—margin “vessel.” Reps. those enlightened
“We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the
excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us”—
2Cor 4:7
As recorded in the temptation in the Wilderness, the Lord drew
from the Law to refute the suggestions of the Diabolos and
Adversary (political and religious): Luke 4:1-13.
The Messiah was “the Word made Flesh”—John 1:14
“David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a
stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his
forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he
fell upon his face to the earth…David ran, and stood
upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it
out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his
head therewith” 1Sam 17:49
The supreme battle is in the mind. It was the “thinking of the
flesh” that never prevailed over the Lord Jesus Christ—
“the carnal mind is enmity against God”—Rom 8:7
“for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts”—Mat 15:19
“David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it
to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent” v. 54
• Jerusalem—the ultimate destruction of Sin in the Flesh!
“And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and
shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come
to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the
wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to
Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron” 1Sam
17:52
Followers of Christ emboldened by His victory over Sin—
1Co 15:13-15 “But if there be no resurrection of the dead,
then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then
is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea,
and we are found false witnesses of God; because we
have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he
raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not”
This is our Hope and Confidence: Acts 24:15; Col 3:20-21; 2Tim 2:8
THE ATONEMENT: CHRIST NOT JUST TO BE ADMIRED, BUT TO BE FOLLOWED
“Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with
Israel…These four were BORN TO THE GIANT in Gath,
and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his
servants” 2Sam 21:15, 21
(HENCE THE 5 STONES)
Goliath and four other “sons of the giant” were slain by David and
His Servants. What Christ did, we must also do in our lives: slay
the “strong man.” Saints are buried “with him” in baptism—
“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with
the affections and lusts”—Gal 5:24
Of course the Lord called the “son of David,” and numerous
Psalms of David are quoted in direct application to the Lord. David
is the standard by which all Kings were measured: walk, perfect
heart, doing that which was right…etc. David is typical of the
pattern of Yahweh’s anointed King!
AMALEK & SIN: KINGDOM OF GOD VS KINGDOM OF SIN

Amalekites called “the sinners the Amalekites”—1Sam 15:18
Amalek attacked Israel after baptism in the Red Sea—Exo 17:8
Amalek captured the “feeble, faint, weary”—Deu 25:17-19
Amalek was defeated by Joshua’s “sword”—Exo 17:13
Amalek’s defeat written “for a memorial in a book and
rehearsed in the ears of Joshua”—Exo 17:14
Yahweh determined war with Amalek “from generation to
generation”—Exo 17:16
Yahweh commanded Saul to “utterly destroy” Amalek”—1Sam
15:3
Saul “took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive”—1Sam 15:8
Yahweh “rent the Kingdom of Israel from Saul and gave it to a
neighbour better than he”—1Sam 15:28
Yahweh’s Anointed King must overcome King Sin!
“And when he looked on Amalek, HE TOOK UP HIS
PARABLE, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations
(mg. “that warred with Israel”); but his latter end shall be that
he perish for ever” Num 24:20
KJV translates Num 24:7 “Agag.” Septuagint translates it “Gog”!
Est 3:1 “Haman…the Agagite.” Eze 39:11-15 “Hamon-Gog”!
How Yahweh’s Anointed Gets the King’s Crown
The means by which David obtains the crown and
kingship from Saul is miraculous, to say the least.
However, the allegory related to this historic event
only has significant meaning for those who
understand the Gospel and the principles of the
Atonement. These astonishing events, again, show that
doctrine is strengthened by types; and types must be
based upon absolute Truth!
“And it came to pass, when David and his men were
come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites
had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten
Ziklag, and burned it with fire; And had taken the
women captives, that were therein: they slew not any…
but carried them away…And David's two wives were
taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail
the wife of Nabal the Carmelite” 1Sam 30:1-2,5
As noted, Amalek represents “sin” (1Sam 15:18)
The two wives rep. Jew and Gentile, both “under sin” (Rom 3:9)
“Captive” reps. being enslaved to “sin” and “death” (2Tim 2:24-3:7)
•
These women represent the saints—feminine, the ecclesia—in
need of a Savior to redeem them from the power of Amalek.
Without the greater Son of David, there would be no hope.
Thus, the principles of the Atonement unfold in this event:
“David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of
stoning him…David encouraged himself in the LORD
his God… And David enquired at the LORD, saying,
Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them?
And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely
overtake them, and without fail recover all” 1Sam 30:57
Like Christ, all men forsook David. He had only God.
The Lord was strengthened by His Father and Assured Victory.
Yahweh made Jesus “of quick understanding” (Isa 11:1-5; John
3:34-35); he was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 4:1-2); and the Hand
of God “was upon him” (Psa 80:17).
The Lord was assured exaltation for his perfect obedience, even
unto death (Phi 2:8-9). Because he willing laid down his life (John
10:17-18), it was not possible for him to be “holden” of the grave
(Acts 2:24); and he would “lose nothing” (John 10:26-29; 17:6-12).
“And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought
him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and
they made him drink water; And they gave him a
piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and
when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he
had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days
and three nights” 1Sam 30:11-12
Egyptian reps. the natural man, “the body of sin” destroyed in
baptism (Rom 6:6; 1Cor 10:1-2). The “three days and three nights”
and revival in “spirit” is obviously typical of Christ.
This emphasizes that Jesus shared our nature; partook of “flesh
and blood” (Heb 2:14-17); bare “in the body of his flesh” (Col 1:2122) “the likeness of sinful flesh” (Rom 8:2). And was “crucified
through weakness” (2Cor 13:4). “In the days of his flesh” he cried
to God to “save him from death” (Heb 5:7-8).
“And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou?
and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man
of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left
me, because three days agone I fell sick” 1Sam 30:13
Though related to sin by his very nature (Rom 1:3-4; Job 25:4; Psa
51:5), the Lord destroyed “him that had the power of death, that is,
the devil” (Heb 2:14)—SIN PERSONIFIED, AS IS AMALEK.
“Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death
hath no more dominion over him”—Rom 6:9
“Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince
of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the
earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said,
signifying what death he should die” John 12:31-33
“For the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in
me” John 14:30
“And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to
this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God,
that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the
hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this
company” 1Sam 17:49
The resurrection of Christ after 3 days meant he would never
again experience sin’s flesh, and therefore sin and death:
“For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he
liveth, he liveth unto God” Rom 6:10
“The word sin is used in two principal acceptations in the
Scripture. It signifies in the first place, “the transgression of the
Law”; and in the next, it represents that physical principle of the
animal nature…Sin, I say, is a synonym for human nature”—Elpis
Israel, pg 126-127
“(Jesus) but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin”—Heb 4:15
“He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin”—
2Cor 5:21
“Sin could not have been condemned in the body of Jesus if it
had not existed there.”—Elpis Israel, pg 127
“As the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also
himself likewise took part of the same; that through
death he might destroy him that had the power of death,
that is, the devil; AND DELIVER THEM WHO THROUGH
•
FEAR OF DEATH WERE ALL THEIR LIFETIME SUBJECT TO
BONDAGE. For verily he took not on him the nature of
angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him TO BE MADE LIKE UNTO
HIS BRETHREN, that he might be a merciful and faithful
high priest” Heb 2:1-4-18
“And David smote them from the twilight even unto
the evening of the next day…And David recovered all
that the Amalekites had carried away: and David
rescued his two wives” 1Sam 30:17-18
After he himself revived from “three days and three nights” in the
grave, the Lord leads his brethren to battle the Amalekites
through “darkness.” The result: Yahweh’s Anointed saves or
delivers his two wives.
Isa 61:1-2 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me;
because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good
tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives…”
Eph 4:8 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on
high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men”
SIN DEFEATED: CROWN AND VICTORY GIVEN TO CHRIST
“Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when
David was returned from the slaughter of the
Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a
man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes
rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he
came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance” 2Sam 1:1-2
Currently, the Lord is at the right hand of the Father (Psa 110),
until he returns to rule in the midst of his enemies. Thus, after TWO
MILLENNIAL DAYS, following his own resurrection, the Lord will
begin his reign. The events that unfold are truly remarkable; but
are only spiritually visible to those who understand the Gospel of
the Kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus Christ—
“David said unto the young man that told him, How
knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?
And the young man that told him said, As I happened
by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned
upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen
followed hard after him. And when he looked behind
him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered,
Here am I. And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I
answered him, I am an Amalekite. He said unto me
again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me…So I
stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that
he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took
the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that
was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my
lord” 2Sam 1:5-10
THE CROWN reps. a reward of everlasting life for overcoming sin—
2Ti 4:8 “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall
give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all
them also that love his appearing”
Jas 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation:
for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life,
which the Lord hath promised to them that love him”
1Pe 5:4 “when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall
receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away” (1Cor 9:25)
Rev 2:10 “Ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou
faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life”
Furthermore, this represents the ascension to the
throne of David to rule over Yahweh’s people Israel—
Amalek is connected with Gog and therefore represents Yahweh’s
Anointed submitting Israel’s enemy and assuming the throne—
Rev 19:11-12 “Behold a white horse; and he that sat upon
him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness
he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame
of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a
name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he
was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his
name is called The Word of God”
“He answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite
…And David called one of the young men, and said,
Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he
died. David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy
head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying,
I have slain the LORD'S anointed. ” 2Sam 1:13-16
“And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed
David king over the house of Judah” 2Sam 2:4
“Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto
Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone
and thy flesh…he reigned over Judah seven years and
six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and
three years over all Israel and Judah” 2Sam 5:1-5
“Solomon and David were types of the Christ, who was to
descend from them after the flesh…Hence, as David reigned
several years over Judah before he became the recognized
sovereign of the whole nation; it behoves that his Son and Lord
reign as King of Judah before he become monarch of all the tribes
of Israel and kingdoms of the earth. This typical indication is
sustained by the testimony of Zec 12:7, that ‘Yahweh shall save
the tents of Judah first…” Eureka, Vol 5, pg 39
NOTICE THE CHRONOLOGY OF THESE EVENTS—
“David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the
city of David” 2Sam 5:7
“David arose…to bring up from thence the ark of God”
2Sam 6:2
Psa 68; Psa 132—prophecy of future Age
The Divine Plan: The initial attempt resulted in Uzzah struck down
(v. 7)—failure of priesthood under the Law. Then, after three
months in the house of Obed-Edom (v. 10), David as king-priest
after Melchisedec brings it to Zion, after six paces (v. 13).
“And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house,
and the LORD had given him rest round about from all
his enemies; That the king said unto Nathan the
prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the
ark of God dwelleth within curtains” 2Sam 7:1-2
CHRONOLOGY CONTINUES (KINGDOM EXPANDS)—
“And after this it came to pass, that David smote the
Philistines, and subdued them…And he smote Moab,
and measured them with a line, casting them down to
the ground…David smote also Hadadezer…David did
dedicate unto the LORD, with the silver and gold that
he had dedicated OF ALL NATIONS WHICH HE SUBDUED”
2Sam 8:1-11
Study Suggestion: Extracting the Gospel from the Law, Prophets
& Psalms—The historic allegory always follows proper
chronological order: from verse to verse, chapter to chapter, book
to book. There is never a need to manipulate the events to reach a
conclusion. The Inspired Word must be allowed to guide us to the
intended result. Verse-by-verse chronology will ensure proper
context and exact figurative or parabolic application.
THE GREAT SACRIFICE OF DAVID: 2SAM 24—1CHR 21
“So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there
fell of Israel seventy thousand men” 1Chr 21:14
This event follows the treason of Absalom, when David’s son rose
up against him and the majority of Israel followed the rebellious
son who appointed himself ruler over Yahweh’s nation.
70—reps the mortality of man
• Psa 90:10 “The days of our years are threescore years
and ten”
(70 also reps the nations: Luke 10:1)
1,000—reps the generations of men
• Psa 105:8 “the word which he commanded to a
thousand generations” (1Chr 16:15)
The last significant act recorded in the life of David is typical of
the Work of the Lord at his first advent; removing the curse of
death upon mankind.
“David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the
people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned
and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have
they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my
God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on
thy people, that they should be plagued” 1Chr 21:17
Like the Lord, David refers to his brethren as “sheep,” and he as
the responsible “shepherd” (Heb 13:20; 1Pet 2:25; John 10:11).
“He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised
for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was
upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we
LIKE SHEEP HAVE GONE ASTRAY; we have turned every
one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the
iniquity of us all…and he was numbered with the
transgressors”—Isa 53:5-6,12 (NUMBERED: he was among us)
“Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say
to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar
unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the
Jebusite” 1Chr 21:18
Yahweh’s Anointed makes a personal sacrifice to take away sin
and death from among the people; as a shepherd over his sheep.
“The type is before us; the antitype is in Christ. He is the altar, the
book of the Law, and the other things that come after”—Law of
Moses. (Heb 13:10-13)
“Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this
threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto
the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that
the plague may be stayed from the people” 1Chr 21:22
Redemption in Christ likened to purchase price (1Cor 6:20; 1Pet 1:18-19)
“And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let
my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo,
I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the
meat offering; I give it all. And king David said to
Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for
I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor
offer burnt offerings without cost” 1Chr 21:23-24
The redeemer offers a personal offering, with personal cost and
implications. This is a vital element of the Atonement—
“The statement that he did these things ‘for us’ has
blinded many to the fact that he did them ‘for himself’
first—without which, he could not have done them for
us, for it was by doing so for himself that he did them
for us”—Law of Moses, pg 159
“’It was necessary that this man have somewhat also
to offer’ (Heb 8:3). ‘By reason hereof he ought, as for
the people, so also for himself to offer for sins’ (Heb
5:3). ‘By his own blood, he obtained eternal
redemption’ (for us, is an addition inconsistent with
the middle voice of the verb employed, which imports
a thing done by one to one’s own self) Heb 9:12”—Law
of Moses, pg 158
“Christ himself was included in the sacrificial work he
did ‘for us’…’For himself that it might be for us,’”—
Law of Moses, pg 163
David, as King-Priest, is a representation of the priesthood of Christ
“after the order of Melchisedec” (Heb 7:21). Before he atones for
humanity—70,000—he first offers on behalf of himself, though never
disconnected with those he came to save (Law of Moses, pg 84)
“Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God,
and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.
And David commanded to gather together the
strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set
masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of
God” 1Chr 22:1-3
The historic allegory reveals the result of the Lord’s sacrifice—
“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household
of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner
stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together
groweth unto AN HOLY TEMPLE IN THE LORD: In whom ye
also are builded together for an habitation of God
through the Spirit” Eph 2:19-22
(Gentiles grafted in)
“Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at
Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared
unto David his father, in the place that David had
prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan ” 2Chr 3:1
The Peace and Reign of Solomon could not have occurred until
after the Reign of David—until sin and its effects were removed.
“Now king David was old and stricken in years; and
they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat”
1Kin 1:1
Clothes—rep. nature; mortal or immortal (2Cor 5:1-3; Psa 132:16).
In this case, it is connected with a dying man and therefore
symbolizes the former. David is typical of the Lord Jesus Christ at
his first advent, and the events that unfold within this chapter
teach the principles of the Atonement—
“Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be
sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her
stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let
her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get
heat. So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all
the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite,
and brought her to the king” 1Kin 1:2-3
Virgin—reps righteous character (Rev 14:4; 2Cor 11:2).
Abishag—means “father of error” (Rom 5:12-15)
Both principles are represented in the Lord Jesus Christ; a man
who shared Adamic Nature, yet undefiled in character.
“Sinful flesh being the hereditary nature of the Lord Jesus, he was
a fit and proper sacrifice for sin; especially as he was himself
‘innocent of the great transgression’ having been obedient in all
things.” Elpis Israel, pg 115
“Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself,
saying, I WILL BE KING: and he prepared him chariots
and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him” 1Kin
1:5
An important event. If David had not arisen from his death bed,
the question of the appointed son would not have been settled —
“Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was
raised from the dead according to my gospel”—2Tim 2:8
“Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of
David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son
of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness,
by the resurrection from the dead”—Rom 1:3-4
“Of all my sons, for the LORD hath given me many sons, He hath
chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of
the LORD over Israel”—1Chr 28:5 This happened in 1Kings 1
“Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother
of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that
Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David
our lord knoweth it not?” 1Kin 1:11
Nathan—the prophet and Bathsheba—daughter of the Oath.
According to PROPHETIC word & the OATH: David’s Son appointed
Act 2:30-35 “Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that
God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of
his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ
to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the
resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell,
neither his flesh did see corruption…For David is not
ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The
LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Until I make thy foes thy footstool”
By remembrance of the prophetic Oath—Nathan and Bethsheba—
David revives to appoint Solomon to sit upon His Throne—
“David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And
she came into the king's presence, and stood before
the king. And the king sware, and said, As the LORD
liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel,
saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me,
and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so
will I certainly do this day” 1Kin 1:28-30
As the “seed of the woman” and “seed of David,” Solomon,
whose names means Peace, is appointed King over Israel.
Likewise, the Lord Jesus Christ was established as the true seed
of David through the resurrection of the dead, and future King of
Israel. *One thing a dead man cannot do is exalt himself Phi 2:8-9
“And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the
tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the
trumpet; and all the people said, God save king
Solomon. And all the people came up after him, and
the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great
joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them”
1Kin 1:39-40
IMPORTANT: David’s Son was appointed King by Yahweh through
the figurative resurrection. In fact, David revived and lived on after
the anointing of Solomon. The two were joint rulers: Solomon was
not appointed King after David’s death—like subsequent kings—
but upon is typical resurrection. Thus, the TWO MEN represent ONE
MAN: the Lord Jesus Christ, in his two advents!
1Ch 23:1 “So when David was old and full of days, he
made Solomon his son king over Israel”
DAVID’S SON: FIRSTBORN BY APPOINTMENT:
The position of Firstborn could be removed through misconduct
and given to another by the Father. This was true with Solomon—
1Ch 26:10 “Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had
sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the
firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)”
1Ch 5:1 “The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for
he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his
father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of
Joseph”
Psa 89:27-36 “I will make him my firstborn, higher than
the kings of the earth….Once have I sworn by my
holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall
endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me”
Christ was the appointed firstborn of David (Col 1:13-20)
Parabolic Reasoning: The Key to Wisdom
Pro 1:1-6 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David,
king of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to
perceive the words of understanding; To receive the
instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and
equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man
knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and
will increase learning; and a man of understanding
shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a
proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise,
and their dark sayings”
The two wisest men of Scripture taught by parables
“And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of
all…And he spake three thousand proverbs” 1Kin 4:30-32
The Son of David—The Kingdom of God upon Earth
The Amazing Chronology of Solomon Typical of Christ’s Reign
“The days of David drew nigh that he should die; and
he charged Solomon his son, saying…thou knowest
also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what
he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel…Do
therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his
hoar head go down to the grave in peace. But shew
kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and
let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they
came to me when I fled because of Absalom” 1Kin 2:17
Solomon both King and Judge: Begins at the House of God
Our conduct under “David” will be rewarded under “Solomon.”
Some will be condemned, others will “eat at His table” Mat 26:29
“Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto
the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD,
which he spake concerning the house of Eli in
Shiloh…And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada
in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the
king put in the room of Abiathar” 1Kin 2:27, 35
THE CHANGE OF THE PRIESTHOOD—REWARD OF THE FAITHFUL SAINTS
Eze 44:15-16 “But the priests the Levites, the sons of
Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the
children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come
near to me to minister unto me, and…they shall enter
into my sanctuary, and they shall come near to my table,
to minister unto me, and they shall keep my charge”
Those who remain stedfast while others go astray and leave the
“watch” will be rewarded (Rev 5:9-10; 1Pet 2:9)
“Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt,
and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the
city of David” 1Kin 3:1
—The Bride called out of the World is joined to the Groom—
“Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto
the king, and stood before him” 1Kin 3:16
The “two harlots” represent Israel and Judah, called “Aholah the
elder, and Aholibah her sister” (Eze 23:1-21).
“And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this
woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a
child with her in the house” 1Kin 3:17
V. 17 states: “there was no stranger with us in the house.”
Therefore, this is a strictly a Jewish consideration, not Gentile.
“And it came to pass the third day after that I was
delivered, that this woman was delivered also…And
this woman's child died in the night; because she
overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my
son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and
laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my
bosom” 1Kin 3:18-20
The woman—the Jews—gave birth to the “Son,” yet also caused
the death of the same child (Acts 3:12-15). The “third day” is when
Israel will be brought to judgment and restoration (Hos 6:1-2).
“Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that
liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith,
Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
And the king said, Bring me a sword” 1Kin 3:23-24
“It shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to
destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon
the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of
supplications: and they shall look upon me whom
they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one
mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for
him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn” Zec
12:9-10
The “mourning” over the “only son” is the emotion represented in
the restoration of the Jews in the Age to Come.
“ALL ISRAEL heard of the judgment which the king had
judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the
wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment” 1Kin 3:28
“So king Solomon was king over all Israel” 1Kin 4:1
Solomon was the only king to rule over all Israel throughout his
entire reign. Such will be the reign of Christ (Jer 3:17-18; Isa 11).
“And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel”
1Kin 4:7
12 Disciples to rule Israel—(Mat 19:28)
“Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by
the sea in multitude” 1Kin 4:20 Abraham Cov. (Gen 22:17)
“Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river
unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of
Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all
the days of his life” 1Kin 4:21 Christ’s reign (Rev 11:15)
The nations will deposit gifts in submission to the Lord of Glory in
the Kingdom Age (Zec 14:14-17; Isa 60:1-12).
“And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under
his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to
Beersheba, all the days of Solomon” 1Kin 4:25
Exact language describing the coming Kingdom of the Lord—
Jer 23:5-6 “I will raise unto David a righteous Branch,
and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute
judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall
be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely”
Mic 4:2-4 “And many nations shall come, and say, Come,
and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the
house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his
ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go
forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem
…they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig
tree; and none shall make them afraid”
“And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of
Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard
of his wisdom” 1Kin 3:34
