The inspiration behind the songs...
‘We Travel in Cars’
This song is about two people who are so different in so many ways but manage to love each
other despite the clash of their personalities. I wrote it very late one night after watching a very
surreal Japanese movie about two desperate lovers trying to stay together amidst their differences.
'Your Time'
I was sitting in the waiting room at the dentist one day and I got chatting with a fourteen year old
girl. She told me that both her parents were very successful in their respective careers and
expected a lot from her grades wise. By the time I had finished the conversation I realised that she
didn’t know her folks that well and that she had been given “everything” but not a lot of quality
time with her family. She inspired me to write ‘Your Time’.
'The Soldier’s Wife'
When I toured Iraq and Afghanistan entertaining the Aussie, American and European troops I
often asked the soldiers, “What does your girlfriend, mother, wife, sister think of you being over
here in one of the most dangerous parts of the world?” Without missing a beat every single one
of them said “She hates it”. My grandmother was married to an ex-serviceman after World War
Two and I remember the horror stories my Pop told me about being a Prisoner of War and what it
was like to return home to civilian life. Many wives, in particular the more isolated women in
rural Australia took over the role of both farmer and farmer’s wife during this time and often
struggled with the realities of post war life.
'Little Cigarette'
Ok so we’ve all had classroom crushes - here is mine in all its desperate candor!
'My Sister and I'
I’ve always wanted to write a song about sisters. There is such and indescribable closeness or
likeness amongst sisters. I’m not sure if it’s a similarity in gestures, looks or way of thinking that
makes the relationship so unique or if it’s simply a shared past. You always know when sisters
are together - they are either laughing like old friends or arguing with a cutting expertise. Either
way it’s so unlike any other relationship in life and one that I am grateful to have.
'So Not In Touch'
This song grew out of frustration. The older I get the more I see the differences between men and
women - we are different animals after all; just from the same species! This one is for the girls.
'All I Had'
I recently met a twenty three year old female Aussie soldier who was the fifth daughter in her
family. She believed her father tried five times to conceive a boy; he was a very strict military
man and she tried to be the boy he never had. She joined the army at a young age and tried to win
the approval of her father despite his aloof and often hard ways. The way she spoke about her dad
inspired me to write ‘All I Had’.
'Beautiful'
This is a love song for my husband - not the first one I’ve written for him and I’m sure not the
last.
'He’s Shy I’m Not'
This is a song I’d like to perform in a circus ring! It’s about all those crazy couples who seem to
be worlds apart in personality. “Opposites attract” they say. Take this song with a glass of G&T
and a fan dance :)!
'I Need a Wife'
Well don’t we all?
