Lindsay Thurber is endeavoring to put together an Opening Ceremony that is worthy of your
school’s participation. The following information will make your teams’ presence much more
memorable. However, we can’t wait for Zones to be completed in order to put together a first-class
presentation. If there is a possibility of your team advancing to Provincials, we need the following
items as soon as you can send them to us:

OPENING CEREMONIES:
The Opening Ceremonies will take place on Thursday, November 25 @ 8:45 AM in the Lindsay
Thurber High School Main Gym. Please assemble your team in Gym 1401 (West Gym) at 8:30 AM
so we can organize the teams. Please have your athletes come dressed in their uniforms or team
sweat suits.
BANQUET/MEAL FUNCTION:
Attendance at the banquet is compulsory for all team members and coaches. The banquet will be a
combined event with the 4A Girls Volleyball Teams. Banquet tickets must be ordered online on
the Registration Information Page by Monday, November 22, 2010 @ 12:00 noon. Due to the
nature of the timing after the Opening Ceremonies, your athletes can wear their team gear to the
banquet. The banquet is for athletes, managers, trainers, statisticians and coaches only.

Rooms have been block booked for the tournament at various hotels within Red Deer. The listing is
posted on the website under the accommodation link as well as under the Information Package link.
The hotels have various cut off dates. When booking your rooms, please mention ASAA 4A Boys
High School Provincial Volleyball Championships to ensure you receive the group rate offered.
Rooms have ONLY been block booked for teams. Any families wishing to book rooms should do so
on their own and not use any of the block booked rooms as there are only enough to accommodate
teams attending provincials, not spectators.

Each team will be assigned a host/hostess. These people will lead you during the opening
ceremonies and will be available to assist you and your team during the competition. Your host/
hostess will provide directions to tournament events and will be on site during your matches to

provide any assistance you may require. They will go out of their way to make you feel welcome
while at Lindsay Thurber.
PHOTOGRAPHS & ACTION SHOTS:
The ASAA requires team photographs for its yearbook. All teams will have their pictures taken
between 4:00 PM and 8:30 PM on Wednesday, November 24. Ten minute time slots are being
scheduled. We would ask that you arrive early for your scheduled practice time, so that your team
photographs as well as your tournament accreditation will be looked after. Please book your
appointment by Monday, November 22, 2010 by 12:00 noon by calling TERENCE McMULLEN @

Photographs will be taken in International Hall @ LTCHS - first room to your left as you enter
the main doors of Lindsay Thurber. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
Dress in game uniform or matching warm-ups. Time is critical, so please be prompt and ready for
your photos.
Each team will receive one complimentary “8X10” team photograph. Players, coaches & parents
can order commemorative “8X10” team photos for $10.00 when the photos are taken. Photographs
will be taken by Portrait Event Imaging. Orders placed the night of pictures will be ready for pick
up the next day. Otherwise, pictures will be mailed to your school.

COACHES MEETING:
There will be a coaches meeting on Wednesday, November 24 at 9:00 p.m. in the LTCHS Library
(tables area @ the back of the Library). Please ensure you have a representative at this meeting as
this is where pertinent championship information is provided and fees are collected. Entry fee and
banquet fees must be brought to the Coaches Meeting. The agenda will address tournament
information, officiating, expectations, appeal procedures and Opening Ceremonies information.
OFFICIAL GAME BALL:
The official game ball will be the Tachikara SV5W Gold (red, white and black) Volleyball.
PRACTICE BALLS:
Each team must provide their own clearly marked volleyballs to use during warm ups and
your scheduled practice time.

CHANGE ROOMS/SHOWER FACILITIES:
Shower facilities and change rooms will be available for use at Lindsay Thurber High School. No
valuables should be left in the change rooms. Please note: Red Deer Public School District is not
responsible for lost or stolen articles. Please ensure valuables are safely stored.
TEAM ROOMS:
Team rooms will not be available. Locker rooms can be used immediately prior to and following
matches. Of course, personal items should not be left in the rooms. None of the venues are
responsible for lost or stolen items.
MINOR OFFICIALS:
Minor officials for line judges and scorekeepers will be provided by students and athletes from
LTCHS. Please treat them professionally and respectfully.
COACHES & OFFICIALS ROOM:
A hospitality room will be available for coaches and officials throughout the tournament. A variety
of snacks, hot food & beverages will be available at the Lindsay Thurber venue.

MEDICAL:
Athletic assistants will be provided at LTCHS. Teams must bring their own medical supplies and
plan to do their own taping. Ice will be provided as required.
CAFETERIA:
There will be a concession provided at Lindsay Thurber from Thursday – Saturday.
SOUVENIR APPAREL:
Souvenir apparel can be purchased from “Gimmics” at Lindsay Thurber or Hunting Hills during the
Provincial Championship weekend. Gimmics will be set up at LTCHS on Wednesday night and all
day Thursday. Athletes wishing to purchase apparel on Friday or Saturday will have to travel to
Hunting Hills High School for all purchases.
SPECTATOR ADMISSION RATES & PROGRAMS:
Spectators will be required to pay a daily admission or purchase a tournament pass. Day passes will
be valid at both the 4A Boys Tournament at Lindsay Thurber and the 4A Girls Tournament at
Hunting Hills on the date of purchase only. The Tournament Pass is valid at both venues the entire
weekend. Spectators must present their passes at the gate each time they enter a venue.

PARKING:
All visitors will be able to park in the over-flow (gravel) parking lot to the west of Lindsay Thurber
(directly north of Camille J. Lerouge School). All busses are to park to the north of the
Memorial Center in the large gravel lot.
VENUE RULES/POLICY & EXPECTATIONS:
It is incumbent upon all coaches and participants to be aware of ASAA Policy. Specifically for this
event, player eligibility (pp 37-40), supervision policy (pg 43) and volleyball policy (pp 99-107).
“All competitions must be conducted with a high standard of courtesy, fair play and
sportsmanship. All those involved share this responsibility”. (ASAA Policy Handbook)
General Venue Rules:
The sites are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please inform your teams
to take care of their own personal belongings.
Volleyballs are NOT to be used outside of gymnasiums, in the hallways, locker rooms
or in any other school areas, in ANY of the venues.
Out of respect for competing teams and spectators, the ASAA believes that any
uniform changing should occur in the changing rooms, or alternatively, athletes
should come dressed to play. Lindsay Thurber will respect the recommendation
from the ASAA and ask that athletes change their uniforms in dressing rooms or
come in uniform.
SPORTSMANSHIP:
Sportsmanship is vitally important and highly valued by the ASAA. A Sportsmanship Trophy will
be awarded to the team that displays appropriate conduct & sportsmanship both individually and at a
team level throughout the Championship. Pins will also be handed out throughout the
Championship to individuals, coaches & spectators who display sportsmanship in their words &
actions.
A Sportsmanship Committee will be at each of the sites to select recipients of the ASAA’s
sportsmanship pin.

Sportsmanship Pin Award
Sportsmanship pins may be given to individuals who exhibit outstanding displays of integrity, fair
play and good sportsmanship. Sportsmanship pins may be given to players, coaches, parents and
spectators. Recipients of sportsmanship pins should show some or many of the following
characteristics:
Players should:
 Conduct themselves in a positive nature/manner before, during and after the game
 Offer positive feedback to opponents during the game
 Shake hands before and after the game
 Be courteous, polite and friendly
 Show good sportsmanship during the game
 Show concern, respect or empathy for an opponent
Spectators should:
 Consistently give positive feedback to players and others
 Welcome opponents
 Present positive comments before, during and after the game
 Be helpful to others (i.e. willingly offer information about the game, score,
scheduling, venue locations, etc. to onlookers)
DISCIPLINE AND MISCONDUCT:
Breaches of the ASAA Code of Ethics are treated seriously, and as host, [we] are required to report
any breaches to the ASAA office where action may occur. A portion of the ASAA Code of Ethics
states, “Any conduct, including, but not limited to ejections, fighting and drugs and alcohol use, that
results in dishonor to the athlete, the team, the school or the ASAA will not be tolerated.” (pp 28-29)
CLOSING CEREMONIES:
Closing Ceremonies and medal presentations will take place after the Bronze Medal Match and after
the Gold Medal Match. Only teams playing in the medal matches are required to take part in the
ceremony. Medal presentations will take place at the venue where the match is played.

OTHER NOTES:
Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Camille J. Lerouge School are both smoke-free
facilities. Smoking by athletes, parents and spectators are prohibited anywhere on school property.
Both venues will be running regular classes on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26th.
Athletes are asked NOT to be wandering through the halls during class time. Student cell phones are
not to be visible during class time, so please ensure your athletes know this during our regular school
days, to alleviate any issues with staff and administration who may not know that your athletes are
not OUR students.
Parking for parents and spectators is available in the Memorial Centre parking lot on Thursday and
Friday when school is in session. Staff parking lots are NOT available and they will be ticketed if
they park there during regular school days. Please note that ONLY CITY OF RED DEER BUSSES
are allowed to enter the front drive of LTCHS. City of Red Deer Bylaw Enforcement can issue
tickets of $500 to anyone who drives their personal vehicle into the bus lane in front of the school.
The lane is well marked, so please ensure your parents know this.
Streaming Games Live Online
Lindsay Thurber has the technology to allow us to stream games out of the Main Gym
(see schedule below for which games will be streamed). Please advertise this to your
school, athletes, parents and relatives who are not able to make it for the tournament.
