Sonnet 29 by William Shakespeare,
When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate.
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;

Sonnet
A
fixed form of lyric poetry that consists of
fourteen lines, usually written in iambic
pentameter.
 2 basic types of sonnets, the Italian and the
English.
 The English sonnet (Shakespearean), is
organized into three quatrains and a couplet,


Typically rhyme abab cdcd efef gg.
Frequently, the most pronounced break or turn
comes with the third quatrain or the concluding
couplet.

 Iambic
means that the first syllable is not
stressed in each of the "feet," the groups
of syllables in poetry. The second one is
stressed.
 Pentameter means there are five of these
feet.
 Meter is the rhythm of the poem.
 The word “sonnet” means “little song” or
“little sound.”
Italian Sonnet
 The
Italian sonnet (Petrarchan) is divided
into an octave, and a sestet, which may
have varying rhyme schemes.


Octave typically rhymes abbaabba; sestet
typically rhymes cdecde, cdcdcd, or cdccdc.
Very often the octave presents a situation,
attitude, or problem that the sestet comments
upon or resolves.

Compose a sonnet in either the English or the Italian form.







Write it in iambic pentameter (or just exactly10 syllables if the
meter is too difficult)
Match the rhyme scheme of your sonnet form
14 lines. No more, no fewer.
42 points on this one.
You must submit the text of your sonnet to www.turnitin.com for
credit. Due 11-14.
OR memorize an English or Italian sonnet for 42 points and recite
it to the class starting 11-14 and finishing by 12-1. Put the sonnet
on your Sonnet doc and tell me you plan to recite it.
If you write and memorize YOUR OWN sonnet, earn 15 points of
extra credit.
Tips on Writing a Sonnet

Here are some helpful hints to get you started writing
a sonnet.






Read through a few sonnets, paying attention to the
rhyme scheme and the rhythm (iambic pentameter).
Select the subject matter. Love of nature or love
between people were common themes; but, a sonnet
can be on any topic you choose.
Decide on the English or Italian form and think about the
situation that will start the sonnet and the resolution or
conclusion that will end it.
Compose each section, following the rhyme scheme,
and using iambic pentameter.
Don’t give up. It may be hard, but will be easier once
the creative juices begin to flow.
You can create a satire of an existing sonnet if you like.
Your work, however, must be original enough to show
some effort and creativity on your part.
