Back to Resume Page Career Experience • Hospital Teen Volunteer: My time this past summer was spent volunteering at my local hospital. My advisor placed me in Same-Day Surgery and the Emergency Room. My skills were enhanced by watching surgeries and participating in patient consultations. • Biomedical Class Participant: My high school had a program dedicated to students that wanted a career in the medical field. We practiced patient care techniques and various methods of solving medical problems. My ability to relate to patients and provide care increased because of this class. Back to Resume Page Leadership Experience Mock Trial: My school’s Mock Trial team is a state and nationally ranked competitive-based team. My role is that of a witness. My ability to think on my feet and verbally communicate my thoughts increased because of Mock Trial. Academic Team: My participation on the Academic Team has existed since fourth grade. I have recently been Junior Varsity Captain and Varsity Captain. This team has allowed me to utilize knowledge and apply it toward specific subjects. Young People In Politics: My friend and I recently founded a club dedicated to allowing students to express their political views. We discovered that many students felt that they did not have a political voice, and we hoped to rectify that. Communication skills : A physician needs to be able to communicate fluently with patients. My daily life has led me to develop this skill through interaction within clubs and teams. My interactions with classmates and professors has led me to effectively mature this skill, so that I can perform my role as a physician gracefully. This project was intended to allow us to discover the skills and education needed for our future careers. I found that a physician needed to be patient and posses critical thinking skills in order to be successful. My daily life leads me to believe that I have the patience required to be a physician. My experiences have allowed me to interact with people and patients on a clinical basis. My experiences have also led me to practice critical thinking skills on a daily basis. My involvement in Mock Trial requires me to be able to think on my feet. Back to Career Related Education Occupational Skills Leadership Skills: My extracurricular activities and Advanced Placement classes have required me to become a leader and practice my leadership skills. Compassion: My volunteering efforts have allowed me to show compassion for afflicted individuals and have also allowed me to understand what a “giving heart” really means. They advised me to receive outside help when considering my career. My parents arranged career interviews, in which I discussed medicine and becoming a physician with different people in the medical field. • Career Aptitude Tests: Part of my education has been spent taking various career aptitude tests. My most prevalent career in any of those tests has been a medical professional. • Personality Sorter: Part of my Advanced Computer Applications class was taking a personality sorter. In this sorter, my placement was that of a Healer. It led me to discover that my ideal career would be one in the medical field as a physical healer. Back to Educational Enhancement Job Shadowing • Dr. Andrew Bernard: My future plans for career enrichment are to shadow a physician. Dr. Andrew Bernard is a surgeon at the University of Kentucky Hospital. He has allowed me to make future plans to shadow him on his rounds and gain true experience as a medical professional. This experience will allow me to judge whether or not medicine is my true calling. Back to Educational Enhancement Information Interviews • My most prevalent informational interview was with Dr. Andrew Bernard. We discussed the specifics of what I had to do to become a physician. He advised me to pursue a major that interested me and to prepare myself for a strenuous work load. He told me that becoming a physician required hard work, determination, and a drive to succeed. He believed that I could go on to do great things in the medical field as long as I strive to do my best.
