About Me
Hello, my name is Bryana Shumate and I'm striving
to become a Physician. Throughout this portfolio, you will
have the opportunity to learn about me, my choice of
career, and my life as well as my personality and talents.
You will also learn my drive to be a physician and what
qualifies me to work in that field.
In creating this electronic career portfolio, I have learned a
lot more about the expectations, working conditions and
career pathways to becoming a physician, through job
shadow experiences and informational interviews. I
understand that it will be a lot of hard work and a lot of
hours but still strongly desire to become a physician.

Career Experience
• Hospital Teen Volunteer: My time this past summer
was spent volunteering at my local hospital. My advisor
placed me in Same-Day Surgery and the Emergency
Room. My skills were enhanced by watching surgeries
and participating in patient consultations.
• Biomedical Class Participant: My high school had a
program dedicated to students that wanted a career in
the medical field. We practiced patient care techniques
and various methods of solving medical problems. My
ability to relate to patients and provide care increased
because of this class.

students felt that they did
not have a political voice,
and we hoped to rectify
that.

• Biomedical Classes: The Biomedical Science classes
at my high school have allowed me to expand my
knowledge of my future career field and grow as a
person. They have instilled a sense of accomplishment
and knowledge of the medical field in me that I can use
throughout my future.
• KOSSA Certified in General Biomedical: Being a
part of various medical classes has allowed me to
become Kentucky Occupational Skills Standards
(KOSSA) certified in the Career Pathway of General
Biomedical 26.1201.00 at my school. This certification
allowed me to become college and career ready.

with illness or injury. They observe and study patients
and then determine the best mode of career for said
patient. They need to know how to perform medical

and graceful manner.

Career Research Project
• Part of my Advanced Computer Applications class
was a research project based on our future careers.
This project was intended to allow us to discover the
skills and education needed for our future careers. I
found that a physician needed to be patient and
posses critical thinking skills in order to be
successful. My daily life leads me to believe that I
have the patience required to be a physician. My
experiences have allowed me to interact with people
and patients on a clinical basis. My experiences
have also led me to practice critical thinking skills
on a daily basis. My involvement in Mock Trial
requires me to be able to think on my feet.

Leadership Skills: My extracurricular activities and Advanced Placement classes have
required me to become a leader and practice my leadership skills.
Compassion: My volunteering efforts have allowed me to show compassion for afflicted
individuals and have also allowed me to understand what a “giving heart” really means.

to better keep my life in order.

Career Development Planning
• Career Advisement Discussion: My counselors made it a
point to invite me to discuss my future career options. They
advised me to receive outside help when considering my
career. My parents arranged career interviews, in which I
discussed medicine and becoming a physician with different
people in the medical field.
• Career Aptitude Tests: Part of my education has been
spent taking various career aptitude tests. My most prevalent
career in any of those tests has been a medical professional.
• Personality Sorter: Part of my Advanced Computer
Applications class was taking a personality sorter. In this
sorter, my placement was that of a Healer. It led me to
discover that my ideal career would be one in the medical field
as a physical healer.

Job Shadowing
• Dr. Andrew Bernard: My future plans for
career enrichment are to shadow a physician.
Dr. Andrew Bernard is a surgeon at the
University of Kentucky Hospital. He has allowed
me to make future plans to shadow him on his
rounds and gain true experience as a medical
professional. This experience will allow me to
judge whether or not medicine is my true calling.

Information Interviews
• My most prevalent informational interview was
with Dr. Andrew Bernard. We discussed the
specifics of what I had to do to become a
physician. He advised me to pursue a major that
interested me and to prepare myself for a
strenuous work load. He told me that becoming
a physician required hard work, determination,
and a drive to succeed. He believed that I could
go on to do great things in the medical field as
long as I strive to do my best.

feet will allow me to care for and help patients to the best of my abilities.
