Romeo & Juliet Performance Assessment Options
Option1:
Create a timeline/summary of each Act and Scene from Act 1-Act 4. For each scene in each act you need
to make sure that you have included any major events or characters that play a vital part in the outcome
of the play. Remember you are summarizing what is going on. Summarizing is when you restate the
main ideas of the passage in your own words, leaving out unnecessary details. For each scene you have
to have at least a 2-3 sentence minimum summary in order to get credit. This entry will be graded on
accuracy and grammar.
Option 2:
The passion of Romeo and Juliet could not have existed in a vacuum. It was fueled by the feuding
families, by the culture, and perhaps, by fate. Act 1 drops us into Romeo & Juliet’s Verona as it
introduces the main characters.
You are to write a gossip column in a newspaper. A gossip column in a newspaper usually presents a
number of tidbits, or short news items, about what is happening around town, who is seen with whom,
and the latest updates on current hot topics and scandals. Imagine that you are a gossip columnist for a
newspaper. Write a gossip column based on the background details provided in Act 1. Include 1 short
news item for each scene.
Write your gossip column for the people of Verona. Make sure you clearly describe what happens in
each scene, describe the people involved, and explain the conflicts in relation to Romeo and Juliet. Also
make sure the column includes one news item for each scene.
Option 3:
Romeo and Juliet, who are now secretly married, face a growing number of problems and pressures.
Think about the state Juliet must be in by the time this act comes to an end. She has married Romeo,
who has killed her cousin Tybalt and has been banished from Verona as a result, and her parents still
plan to see her marry Paris.
Imagine that you are Juliet. Write a diary entry from Juliet’s point of view that highlights what has
happened in the last twenty four hours. In your writing, express emotions that Juliet is experiencing and
reveal why she feels this way. This diary entry needs to be between 1-3 pages in length.
Make sure that your diary entry describes the major events in Act 3, is written from Juliet’s point of
view, expresses the feelings and emotions Juliet experiences during these events, and has explained why
she(you) have made choices that might seem incomprehensible to the adults. Also you need to write
this diary entry with the Nurse in mind.
Option 4:
In Act 4 the mood and atmosphere change quickly from one scene to the next as Shakespeare alternates
some very serious events with episodes of comic relief. For example, Friar Lawrence and Juliet discuss
their secret plans in the first scene, but immediately thereafter, we see Lord Capulet in his kitchen joking
with his servants.
Write an essay that compares and contrasts the serious and the humorous scenes in this act. In your
essay explain the sequence of the scenes and how they alternate between serious and humorous.
Explain how the scenes of comic relief differ from the serious events. For example, how does the mood
change from one scene to the next? Then explain why you think Shakespeare decided to include so
much humor in this act.
Make sure you explain what happens in each scene and note whether it is serious or humorous, explain
how the mood changes from one scene to another, make sure your introduction states why you think
Shakespeare included comic relief in this act, and that your conclusion restates your opinion based on
evidence that you presented in your essay.
