Description:
Welcome to COMP 2923 - Green Computing and IT. The course will provide an
introduction to the issues of how energy used by information and communications
technology is becoming a major concern in the world and how it can be reduced.
The course will also cover the growing demand by government and businesses for
computer hardware, software and methods that can be used to monitor and control
domestic and industrial energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and other impacts on
the earth’s environment.

Meeting Schedule
Slot 15, Tuesday and Thursday, 3:00-4:30pm, in HSH 202.
We will have one or more invited speakers.
We are planning at least one tour to a facility in Halifax in late Feb or March.
Course Materials
Textbook: There will be no specific textbook. Links, handouts and notes will be
provided on specific topics and issues.

Throughout the course I will share class notes, assignments and online resources
with you via the course website. You are responsible for visiting this site frequently
for updates mentioned in class or via emails. I encourage you all to explore the
external resource page on website and to share any useful links that you find. We
are all learning.
Emails: I will be sending important communications to you via your Acadia email
address. Please ensure that you are checking for such emails every day.
Assignment Submission site: https://acorn.acadiau.ca. For details on submissions
please see the course website.
Web server: You will create a simple webpage for one of your assignments
Throughout the course you will have several assignments that will need to be
hosted on a web server. You will be using your account on falcon.acadiau.ca for this.
Please make sure your account is functional and in good standing before your first
assignment.
Marking Scheme:
15% -Participation/Quizzes – Your involvement in class and tutorials is important,
be present and contribute for maximum participation marks. We will have several
quizzes throughout the term for yourself assessment.
35% - Assignments – there will be several assignments through the term.
30% - Group project
20% - Individual term paper
