UNILERT
Emergency Warning System for Texas A&M University—Central Texas
1.0 Course Overview
This course is designed to provide an understanding of the major counseling theories and
practices. Major theories of counseling will be examined with an emphasis on four areas: key
concepts of the theory, its beliefs about the therapeutic process, the role of the counselor, and
how to apply the theory to helping a client change. Each theory will be analyzed for its
uniqueness and similarity with the other approaches and applied to case examples. In addition,
there will be opportunities to practice some basic principles of each theory (i.e., role-plays) and
when possible see the theory in action (i.e., videotapes, class examples).
2.0 Course Objectives
This course is designed to:
• Describe the major theoretical approaches to understanding human personality.
• Apply theoretical constructs to commonly encountered issues in counseling.
• Demonstrate techniques from several different theoretical approaches.
• Describe the different theoretical approaches.
2.1 Student Learning Outcomes
• Begin the process of integration of theoretical and experiential learning into the student’s
own personal model of the counseling process.
2.2 Competency Goals Statements
To meet the licensure requirement of the Texas State Board of Examiners of
Professional Counselors Rules/Regulations, Subchapter B. Authorized Counseling
Methods and Practices:
§681.31. Counseling Methods and Practices. The use of specific methods, techniques, or
modalities within the practice of professional counseling is limited to professional counselors
appropriately trained and competent in the use of such methods, techniques, or modalities.
Authorized counseling methods techniques and modalities may include, but are not restricted to,
the following:
(1) individual counseling which utilizes interpersonal, cognitive, cognitive-behavioral,
behavioral, psychodynamic, and affective methods and strategies to achieve mental, emotional,
physical, social, moral, educational, career, and spiritual development and adjustment through
the life span.

4.0 COURSE REQUIREMENTS
4.1. Demonstrate professionalism: 10 Points
The more involved a student becomes, the more a student will learn. In addition,
the material discussed in this course is best learned through class discussions and
activities whether in class or in online discussions. As such, it is important to come
to class prepared having read the material and developed questions about such.
Students show professionalism when they: (a) attend all classes and activities on
time and remain in class for the duration; (b) are prepared for class discussions; (c)
attend to class discussion (online and in class) and timelines for assignments; (d)
are flexible to schedule changes; (e) and respect the opinion and rights of others.
Due to the hybrid structure of this class, it is imperative that a student does not miss
any class time. Absence from class, online discussions, weekly online
requirements, or observations all carry equal weight distribution.
Participation IS attendance. MANDATORY CHECK IN DUE VIA EMAIL DURING
1ST Class Day or before.
All assignments should be turned in during the class period on the day they are
due or via email on Blackboard on days we do not meet. Assignments turned in
after such times are considered late. Points will be deducted for each day the
assignment is late. Special circumstances need to be discussed with the instructor
ahead of time, when possible.
Due to the limited amount of time we have together, attendance for every class is
mandatory. Each student is expected to attend class and online activities. If a
student misses more than one class, the final grade will be lowered by 10 points. If
there is an emergency, please contact me as soon as possible to make alternate
plans.
Because of the nature of the class, at times, students may engage in some selfdisclosure. Trust and openness are very important in learning about counseling;
therefore, I will ask each student to maintain confidentiality. If a student wishes to
share with others outside of the classroom (including online portions), the student
2
should reveal only his/her own reactions and experiences; however, not those of
classmates.
4.2 Process Paper: Due June 14 (15 points)
This process paper will help a student formalize his/her beliefs on how people are
helped. We all enter into this profession because we want to help others. Not much
thought is put into how we accomplish that. For this assignment, a student should
write down his/her beliefs on how s/he, as a counselor-in-training, can help people
bring about change in their lives. No research or references are needed for this
paper, but I do expect APA style. (No abstract required) I want to know what the
student’s own ideas are. Quality, not quantity is important. Questions to consider are:
1. What conditions are necessary for people to change?
2. How will you help them meet these conditions?
3. When helping others, what type of focus is important (i.e. past/present/future)?
Why?
4. When helping others, what is your role? ( i.e. expert, consultant, etc.)? Why?
4.3 Mid-term June 28 Online (15 points)
This exam will cover assigned readings including the required text, power-points,
and online discussions covered up to the point of the exam. Students will examine
each theory covered, its similarities and differences, its development and uses for
counseling. The exam will be in multiple choice format and short answer questions.
Students are expected to take the exam as scheduled. It is the student’s
responsibility to contact me to arrange alternative times to take the quizzes. This
should be completed in advance of the scheduled times unless there is an
emergency.
4.4 Theory Paper: Due July 12 (15 points)
This paper should be no longer than 6 - 8 pages. The paper needs to follow APA
style of writing and needs to be typed and double-spaced. It must have a minimum
of two (2) scholarly references (not the textbook). The goal of this paper is for
students to read and explore a particular approach in-depth. Students should pick
a theory and explain the key concepts of this approach, the approach’s view of the
role as therapist, the therapeutic goals, and central techniques and methods.
Students should conclude with their ideas about how they want to use this theory in
their future counseling practice.
4.5 Final Exam: July 23 Online (15 points)
The final exam will cover all of the theories covered in this course. This exam will
include short answer questions and one essay. The exam will be given online and
students will have a specified period of time to complete. Students will be able to
use the text, power-points, online discussions, and other resources to complete the
exam. Please note that this is an individual assignment. Students may not use each
other or me as a resource. Any attempt to do so will not only result in my extreme
disappointment, but also in a grade of 0 for the exam. Remember to reference any
sources used.
3
4.6 Blackboard Discussions (20 points)
I will post power-points for each theory online. These will supplement the readings
from the text. In addition, I may post articles or videos online as additional
supplements. My goal for this is to create a forum where we can ask questions and
post comments on the material as well as of each other. Since I will not be lecturing
at length on each theory, I want to use this to clarify anything that students may be
confused about. Students will be responsible for all the materials posted. For each
discussion, students will be required to post five (5) meaningful responses to the
discussion board. Based on the time a student posts in relation to other students, the
student should also respond to other student's comments. A student’s postings
should reflect well thought out and intelligent points of discussion. I reserve the right
to decide if the student's effort and insight will receive full credit. Please feel free to
take a personal stand and express your convictions on the topics presented (within
professional reason). Due Dates: see calendar below. Discussion will be with a
minimum of five (5) posts. Discussions will be between 7:00 Sunday – 5:00 PM
Friday. Four (4) discussions @ 5 points each = 20 points

6. 0 Drop Policy
If you discover that you need to drop this class, you must go to the Records Office and ask for
the necessary paperwork. Professors cannot drop students; this is always the responsibility of
the student. The record’s office will give a deadline for which the form must be returned,
completely signed. Once you return the signed form to the record’s office and wait 24 hours,
you must go into Duck Trax and confirm that you are no longer enrolled. If you are still enrolled,
FOLLOW UP with the records office immediately. You are to attend class until this procedure is
5
complete to avoid penalty for absence. Should you miss the deadline or fail to follow the
procedure, you will receive an F in the course.
7.0 Academic Integrity
Texas A&M University - Central Texas expects all students to maintain high standards of
personal and scholarly conduct. Students found responsible of academic dishonesty are subject
to disciplinary action. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on an
examination or other academic work, plagiarism, collusion, and the abuse of resource materials.
The faculty member is responsible for initiating action for each case of academic dishonesty and
report the incident to the Associate Director of Student Conduct. More information can be found

11.0 Expectations
This course is an essential course in learning about counseling --- where it came from, present
perspectives and its future directions. It is important that students get a thorough understanding
of the various theories so that they can begin to develop a personal identity with theoretical
standards for working with different clients. I believe this course is one of the most important for
students in the counseling program.
6
What to expect from me:
