According to the paper, speaking at the Nigeria photovoltaic energy conference solar on 2014, held in Lagos at the weekend, Kuku noted that Nigeria lies within a high sunshine belt and thus has enormous solar energy potentials. NERC to clampdown on recalcitrant DISCO over prepaid meters The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is set to clampdown on electricity distribution companies that have failed to comply with its substitute order on meter provision, within the credited advance payment for metering implementation (CAPMI) scheme. The paper stated that, NERCs recent decision to embark on a nationwide fact finding visit to to distribution networks across the country, starting from Abuja following widespread complaints by electricity consumers of the discos non-compliance to the agency’s order on CAPMI which allows consumers to voluntarily pay for meter and get rebate on energy purchases. LEADERSHIP 2015: Sheriff Boosts PDP’s chances to Form Government In Borno - Minister The paper reported that the Minister of State for Power, Muhammad Wakil, had yesterday said the coming of former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, to the People Democratic Party (PDP) has brightened the party’s chances to win state’s Government House. Wakil who addressed a press conference in Maiduguri to register their full support for Ali Sheriff’s defection to the PDP fold said 2015 presents a gold opportunity for Borno PDP to form government now that the likes of Sheriff have come to swell their ranks. KEDCO Crisis: Kano Engineers seek Jonathan’s intervention The Association of Professional Engineers of Kano State has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to set up a Presidential Committee of inquiry to look into the crisis currently rocking the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO). According to the paper, in a letter signed by Engineer Umar Yakassai, the association urged the President to look into the activities of Sahelian Energy and Northwest Power and the role of director general of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in the Whole Scam. GUARDIAN Global energy consumption to rise by 37% by 2040 International Energy Agency (IEA) has estimated that global consumption of primary energy will increase by 37 per cent by 2040 mostly driven by growing demand in Asia, Africa, the middle East and Latin America. The paper reported that, IEA said in its recent world energy outlook 2014, that world primary energy demand is 37 per cent higher in 2040, putting more pressure on the global energy system. VANGUARD Igbo Int’l group urges Jonathan to commission $500m power plant in Abia A socio-political association of Igbo people worldwide, the Igboezue, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to approve the commissioning of the completed $509 million Osisioma power plant in Abia State. According to the paper, the Igboezue is a statement by its National Leader Chief Chekwas Okorie, in Abuja explained that the power project had the capacity to place the South-East geopolitical zone on the path of growth and attract its numerous entrepreneous back home to actively participate in developing their states of origin. FG, American investors sign MoU on 1,200MW solar power project A Consortium of American Investors in renewable energy, under the auspices of MOTIR SEASPIRE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the Federal Government to deliver 1,200MW of solar powered electricity in Nigeria within the next two years. The paper stated that, the proposed solar technology to be installed is guaranteed U.S standard, assuring that the consortium, has the capacity to increase the scope of project up to 10,000MW in the next five years. Nigeria loses gas investments to other African countries - Report Nigeria remains Africa’s largest gas consumer and producer, but the focus for new gas projects is shifting to the east coast and to the huge off-shore discoveries in Mozambique and Tanzania, the World Energy outlook special report 2014 just released has stated. According to the paper, the World Energy outlook, recognized as the most authoritative source of strategic analysis of global energy markets said the east coast liquefied natural gas export is helped by relative proximity to the importing markets in Asia. Power firms to pay N225m for connection to TCN network The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has fixed a charge of about N225 million for power firms seeking to modify their connection to its transmission across the country and also for firms seeking to connect to the network for the first time. The paper stated that, the TCN, however stated that the cost for connecting equipment does not include the power transformer all 132KV equipment, grounding reactor, among others on the 33KV transformer incomer. Electricity: MAN cries out over high tariff, fixed charges The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), has cried out to the Federal Government to review the Multi-Year-Tariff-Order (MYTO II), released in June 2014, containing the discriminatory fixed and average charges saying the charges are suffocating the sector, the paper stated. The President of MAN, Dr. Frank Jacobs, who made the remarks during a visit to the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo in Abuja, insisted the rate should be reduced.
