The Family Education Rights and Privacy

Act prevents universities from disclosing a student’s educational records or personally identifiable information from their educational records without written consent, unless a specific exception applies. FERPA-protected information may not be released in any form that would make it identifiable to the student.

Use of word “MAY” equals flexibility

• You may share info with parents under certain conditions

• College-parent relationship

We can decide what to do

Release of information is situational

Signed release form provides transcript info

FERPA Release Form

Release form is found online @ DoS

Form must be filled out and signed by student

Release of academic or disciplinary information

Release specifies what information and to whom it may be released during a specified period of time

Student employment records are part of their “educational records”.

FERPA doesn’t apply to law enforcement records

Heath and safety emergency exception is only for imminent threats

Academic committee meetings in public forum may not discuss student academic records

The attendance policy of each instructor is to be submitted in writing to each student at the beginning of the course.

Attendance is likely to affect the student’s achievement and it is at the instructor’s discretion as to how class attendance and participation are factored into the student’s overall grade for the course.

When a student must be away from campus for an extenuating circumstance, and particularly if longer than 3 days or more, notification for student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office, 715-232-

1181 or email: dean_of_students@uwstout.edu

.

Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor.
