INSTRUCTIONAL POLICY 109.2
INDEPENDENT STUDY
This policy is needed to assist students in completing graduation requirements.
1.1
Students who are two semesters from graduation may take a course for
independent study according to the following:
1.1.1 The course must be required for a degree/certificate at Jefferson
Davis Community College.
1.1.2 The course must not have been offered or did not make within one
academic year prior to the expected graduation date.
1.1.3 The course will be a lecture course without any co-requisites unless
the co-requisite can be taken in the traditional classroom setting. A
course with a required lab may be considered with prior approval
from the Dean of Instruction.
1.2
Independent study courses must provide students with the same class
requirements as students enrolled in classes taught in the traditional
format.
1.3
Students can take no more than one independent study class within a
semester and no more than two classes in independent study work at the
College.
1.4
The independent study request must be initiated by the student in
consultation with the academic advisor. Application must then be made by
the student to the appropriate instructor and then to the division chair who
must approve the request for independent study. Approval of both the
appropriate division chair and the instructor concerned is required. Final
approval must come from the Dean of Instruction.
1.5
Only full time faculty members will supervise an independent study class.
The independent study will not be counted as part of the faculty’s teaching
load nor as an overload.
1.6
Any exceptions must be approved by the Dean of Instruction.
