VAIGAI COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
MADURAI
Second college Day and Sports Day celebrations 29thApril 2014
Annual Report (2013-14)
Our Trust and objective
Noble Academicians having the passion for the academics formed Vaigai Educational Trust and
with the aim to serve the community by education, our beloved management has established
our Vaigai College of Engineering (VCE) in 2012. The objective of VCE is to provide a better
platform for learning technical education aspiring to bridge the gap between the quality of the
technical graduates and the expectation of the industry and hence the world. With the
guidance of our beloved management team headed by Chairman Mrs R. Indira Ramanathan,
our Secretary Mrs B. Dhanalakshmi Boopathi Manickam, Mrs L. Krishnaveni our Treasurer for
VET and Mrs. K. Sujatha Baskar our Treasurer for VCE, We are marching towards a bright future.
Journey in second year
We started our second year journey with 37 experienced faculty members, 17 non-teaching
staff and 326 students in first and second year.
Infrastructure Development
During the academic year 2013-14, our beloved management has invested huge investment for
our infrastructure. Second floor with academic classrooms and library block has been
constructed. For our Mechanical department, we have established well equipped general
mechanical workshop, manufacturing technology lab I and manufacturing technology II
laboratories. For our Civil engineering department, we have established strength of materials
lab, Hydraulics lab and survey lab. For our Electrical engineering department, we have
established Electrical machines lab, Electrical circuits lab. For our electronics and
communication department, we have established electronics lab I, electronics lab II and
microprocessor lab. For Computer science and engineering department, we have established
one more computer lab facility with 60 terminals with recent configuration and licensed
softwares. We have arranged good transport facility to connect major parts of Madurai city,
mineral water supply in the campus and a small canteen for refreshments.
We have established our library block housing more than 6000 books with all facilities. We have
subscribed more than 49 international journals including some prestigious IEEE transactions
also, and 33 national journals in print and digital form. We have installed three computer
2
terminals for assessing digital contents in the library and e-journals subscribed through our
library. For the access of our faculty and students, we have full storage of NPTEL learning
contents which was designed by consortium of all IITs and IIMs.
Faculty development
Our beloved management always encourages our faculty members to do their research. This
year four of our faculty members registered and pursuing their PhD. Our faculty member Ms. N.
S. Minimala AP/Physics has defended her thesis this month and she is eligible to earn her PhD
degree this June.
We also encourage our faculty to undergo various training programs, workshops and
conferences. Nineteen of our faculty members had been given about thirty such opportunities
for such activities last year and the list is given as Annexure-I
Academic development
We conducted more number of special classes and coaching for our first and second batch
students as most of them came from Tamil medium background.
In Anna University second semester examinations, our students obtained overall pass
percentage of 57% and in third semester 33% of them cleared all subjects. Recently in first
semester examinations 55 students out of 136 cleared all their subjects which yield 40.44% of
overall pass percentage. Overall pass percentage subject wise; Maths 83%, English 91 %,
Fundamentals of computing 79%, Engg. Graphics 84%, Physics 50%, and Chemistry 60 %, Comparing this
results with other colleges, we stand at a better place in Madurai Region. Yet we have to strive hard to
become the best in class. I took this opportunity to congratulate all students for their hard work and I
extend my sincere thanks to every faculty member for their contribution. We have to improve our self in
upcoming semester examinations. I request all our students to give importance and top priority to their
semester examinations.
Special training for aptitude and English communication
By keeping placements in mind, our beloved management devised a Special training
programme on Aptitude and English communication for our students on every Saturday. Our
Faculty members in mathematics department and English department were trained to conduct
this activity guided by Prof. Rajaram and Prof. Gnanaraj. On behalf of students and staffs of
VCE, I humbly submit my sincere thanks to these learned professors for their guidance and
support during the planning and execution of this programme. We will continue this
programme upto final year so that at the end of final year every student will be well equipped
in communication and aptitude to attain their higher goals.

Student activities
This year apart from various departmental activities, we formed the following clubs to
encourage our students to involve in various activities of these clubs.
Engineering Clubs:
1. Electronics Club
2. Environmental and Energy Club
3. Automotive and Robotics Club
4. Software Club
Fine Arts Clubs:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Literary Club (Tamil / English)
Music/Dance/ Skit Club
Visual Arts Club
Arts and Crafts Club
Er V Ramprakash Managing Director of Industrial Electronics Corporation Private Limited,
Madurai inaugurated Engineering clubs and Dr. Vishalakshi Subramanian, Former Vice-Principal &
Head Department of Tamil Fatima College, Madurai Inaugurated Fine Arts Clubs on 01-02-2014.
Students across all discipline have become member of these clubs and participated in various
events with team spirit, innovation and interest. Many activities and competitions had been
planned in every club during all Saturdays. These club activities helped in bringing our students
potential with leadership and interpersonal skills. These platforms provide good opportunity for
our students to apply their knowledge for practical situations with an interdisciplinary approach
of all engineering branches.
Student external participation
We encourage our students to participate in various competitions organized in various
organizations. This year more than 30 batches of our first year and second year had
participated and won prizes in various activities held at various institutions and brought laurels
to our VCE family. A list of students those who won prizes in several occasions, is given as
Annexure-II. On behalf of management and staff I congratulate these students. Apart from
these competitions, about 10 students participated in training programme to prepare for Indian
administrative services on 15-03-14 conducted at KLNCE Madurai and about 6 students
participated in an Entrepreneurship Development programme on 23-02-14 conducted at
SRVCE.
4
Student Personality Development Camps
Apart from academics, VCE believes in producing our students as responsible citizens. To
initiate over all development among our students, our beloved management organized three
Student Personality Development Camps at CESCI (Centre for Experiencing Socio-Cultural
Interaction) from 27-28 Dec 2013, 11-13 Jan 2014 and 21-23 March 2014. Out of 190 second
year students 94 students participated in these camps and benefited. Each camp is unique and
more than 18 personalities visited these camps as resource persons to train our students. These
camps are well received by our students and also by their parents. In the upcoming year we are
planning more number of such camps to benefit entire VCE student community. In this juncture
I wish to submit my sincere thanks to Prof. Boopathi Manickam Prof. Vellikannan, Prof.
Rajaram, Prof. Ganaraj , Prof. Sivakumar and all resource persons for their service to bring
success in all camps.
Sports activity
Our beloved management had created play fields and grounds to encourage our students to
participate in sports and games which will help to develop our students as leaders. Our student
K. Manigandan of II Civil got III place in 400 Mts hurdles at AU Zone 16 meet. Our students and
our faculty members participated with enthusiasm in various sports events at the intramural
sport meet during January and February this year and they are receiving their medals and prizes
today from our honorable chief guest. In forth coming academic year with the guidance and
support of our management, we are planning to have more number of student representations
at zonal meet and participations in various competitions outside our campus.
