Education NSW/ACT - Professional Experience Handbook– Graduate Diploma in Education/Master of Teaching Lesson Plan Format Class: Year 10 Science Date: 14th November 2013 Start: 10.55 am Finish: 11.45 am Period: 3 Key Learning Area: Science Lesson Topic: Mitosis and Meiosis (cell division) Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson): Living Cells Syllabus Outcome(s): 5LW3b. identify that during reproduction the transmission of heritable characteristics from one generation to the next involves DNA and genes (ACSSU184) Indicators of Learning for this lesson: Assessment: By the end of this lesson, the students will: - Questioning throughout explanations and teaching to gauge student understanding. - Ss write down meaning of chromosome and chromatid. - Ss define mitosis and meiosis in their workbook/laptop. - Ss answer questions on the worksheet. - Understand the difference between mitosis and meiosis by drawing up a table in their workbook/laptop. Any safety issues to be considered: Resources: Preparing lesson: KISS booklet “DNA” For Lesson: KISS booklet, SmartBoard, PPT “Mitosis and Meiosis” Education NSW/ACT - Professional Experience Handbook– Graduate Diploma in Education/Master of Teaching Lesson Content/Indicators of Learning (What is Taught): Timing (mins) Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences: (How it is taught) Resources and Organisation: Put the work on the board – PPT “Mitosis and Meiosis”. PPT T greets Ss at the door and instructs them to have their learning material including laptops ready for class. Smartboard INTRODUCTION Expectations Raise your hand to speak. Do not talk when I am talking. You will have access to the ppt on Edmodo so you do not need to write details but can make points if you like. Ask questions when you do not understand. 10 KISS booklet T welcomes Ss. Ss take out their name cards. T explains lesson goals and expectations for this lesson. T asks questions to revise last lesson: Like what gametes are and their function? Gametes are sex cells, they carry genetic information and are necessary to produce and offspring or in short for reproduction. Gametes Animal = sperm (male) & ovum (female) Plant = pollen grain (male) & ovule (female) Meiosis basic process 1. Chromosomes from mother and father join to form a diploid cell => Zygote – they shorten and thicken. 2. Homologues pairs come together 3. Nucleus membrane disappears 4. Spindle fibres form and attach to the chromosome centres 5. Long and short homologous pairs move to opposite ends of the cell 6. Cell splits What are the animal male/female gametes called? What are the flowering plant male/female gametes called? What is the basic process of meiosis? Slides 8 - 13 Ppt from last lesson “chromosomes and fertilisation Education NSW/ACT - Professional Experience Handbook– Graduate Diploma in Education/Master of Teaching DEVELOPMENT 5 3 5 2 Expand on last lessons Meiosis by using ppt from last lesson from slide 32 Review and expand last lessons PPT “chromosomes and fertilisation” T opens current lesson ppt “mitosis and meiosis” SmartBoard Watch YouTube video link on ppt “mitosis and meiosis” Worksheet Worksheet ”Reproduction and Meiosis” Go over the answers to “Reproduction and meiosis” Ss swap sheets to mark peer work. Current lesson’s PPT 10 T moves into mitosis, explaining and using the PPT “Mitosis and Meiosis” to clarify. YouTube video on mitosis link on ppt for the lesson 5 T hands out worksheet “Chromosomes and Mitosis” for Ss to complete. 2 Go over the answers to “Chromosomes and Fertilisation” Ss swap sheets to mark peer work. 8 Recap on the lesson T asks Ss to explain to the class what we have learnt. CLOSURE Phases for meiosis and mitosis; Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Mitosis: 1 cell produces two cells Meiosis: 1 cell produces four gametes T hands out the HW – 2 Worksheets on critical reading on meiosis and mitosis. Homework T explains that the worksheets will be collected for marking at the beginning of our next lesson which is tomorrow period 3.
