What is Pearson?
Pearson is an international media company with world–
leading businesses in education, business
information, consumer publishing and testing.
Pearson Language Tests (PLT) delivers a suite of
English language tests designed to assess the
English language usage of students who are
speakers of other languages.
Pearson Tests of English (PTE) include:
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic),
Pearson Test of English General (PTE General) and
Pearson Test of English Young Learners (PTE Young Learners).

What is PTE General?
PTE General consist of two parts:
a written paper and an oral test.
The written paper tests listening, reading
comprehension and writing skills and is
marked by external examiners in the UK.
The oral test is assessed by trained local
examiners and is sent to the UK for
moderation.

which are linked to the
Common European Framework
of Reference for Languages.

beginner level knowledge of
English sufficient for survival

intermediate English for

PTE General is a scenario-based English
language test designed to allow
students the freedom to express
themselves, show what they can do
and how well they can use English as
speakers of other languages.

The emphasis for the students is on real-life
situations that learners will meet, not on
how well they remember formal vocabulary
and structures. For this reason, these tests
use real-life scenarios rather than
grammatical exercises, and focus on a

communicative nature of the tests enables
them to be shorter for test takers, without
compromising the quality of the achievement.

fast and helpful feedback on individual
performance of students in the tests.
How to prepare for the
PTE General Test?
The types of tasks that test takers have to do
in the tests are similar to those found in most
modern communicative course books (such as
Language Leader).
Also, the topics used in most course books are
similar to those used in the tests.
Most modern course books will provide practice
relevant to the test.
There is, therefore, no need to follow a specific
PTE General course.
