THE PARROTS
Parrots live in the forests of South America, where summer lasts all the year round,
where leaves are always green. The parrots make their homes in the forest, because
there they can find shade in the heat of the day.
Parrots eat fruit and nuts. They like wild cherries best of all. They like them because
of the stones. The beak of the parrot is very sharp and it cracks these stones easily.
Parrots like to bathe very much. They fly about till they find water. They dip into the
water and splash it over their feathers. Then they sit in the sun till they are dry. In the
middle of the day the heat becomes very great. Then parrots fly in the deepest shade.
They sit in the trees and sleep. But in the evening, when the sun is going down, they
wake up. They eat fruit, go to the water and bathe again. Only after that they go to the

Health
There is a proverb ”A sound mind in a sound body”. I think everyone wants to
be in good health and have a strong body.
How can we get it? We should eat healthy food: fruit and vegetables, fish,
cheese etc. We need to do physical exercises every day. It’s good when children are
interested in any kind of sport. The doctors say swimming and running are the best
for us. We also need to stay outdoor every day.
Of course, we should take care about our teeth and brush them twice a day. It’s very
important for us to drink about 2 liters of water every day. We should not eat a lot of
sweets, use sweet drinks, watch TV for several hours per day. We need to know it’s
bad for health when the people smoke cigarettes, drink a lot of coffee, don’t have
breakfast , eat late at night, go to bed late at night. .

The Ant and the Grasshopper
While a grasshopper was taking it easy in the shade of a willow tree one hot
summer's day, an ant struggled in the sun with a grain of rice that he was carrying out
to his nest. "Hey, Mister Ant," the grasshopper said. "Why don't you take it easy, like
me? You can work tomorrow. "The ant paused. "I'm saving up food now for the
cold winter ahead, and if you know what's good for you, you'll do the same," he said.
The grasshopper looked at the ant and laughed. "Cold winter? But Mr. Ant, it is
sunny and hot right now. It won't be winter for a long time. There is always time to
gather food, there's no need to spend your time in this beautiful weather doing work.
Come sit down with me and have some lemonade." But the ant refused and spent the
rest of the day gathering food and storing it in his nest.
As the days went by the ant continued to collect food, while the grasshopper
continued to rest underneath the shade of the willow tree. Three or four months later,
winter came and it was very cold. While the ant was snug in his nest, the starving
grasshopper shivered under a pile of dead leaves and wished that he'd paid attention

The internet: here to stay
Most people today cannot imagine their life without the Internet. I believe it is one of
the most important innovations. Thanks to the worldwide web, our lives have become
easier and more exciting.
First of all, the Internet helps us find information easily. For example, we can read
the news and find answers to the questions 24 hours a day.
In addition, we can use the Internet for entertainment. We can send e-mails to friends
and shop online. We can even listen to the latest music and watch live sporting events
from other parts of the world.
However, some people argue that the Internet has a negative effect on society. Internet users become less sociable
They stay at home most of the day instead of going out to shop, work and meet
friends.
In my opinion, the Internet has more advantages than disadvantages. Our lives are
better with it and I hope it is here to stay.

A. that you have to go somewhere to work out
B. that you can't live a normal life
C. that it can change our daily routines

JIM THORPE
Jim Thorpe was perhaps the greatest athlete the United States has ever had.
James Francis Thorpe was born on May 28, 1888 in Oklahoma.
First he went to a public school for Indians near his home. In 1904 he entered the
Carlisle Indian School. He did not have enough money to study full-time and had to
interrupt his education several times as he had to earn his living.
The director of athletics at Carlisle was Glenn Warner, a famous athletic coach.
Warner began to train Thorpe for football and track. Jim became the best American
football player. He also competed in baseball, basketball, tennis and swimming.
In 1912 the Olympic Games were held in Stockholm. Never before in the history of
the Modern Olympics had one man competed in both pentathlon and decathlon at one
meeting of the Olympic Games. Thorpe did this and he won two gold medals.
According to the rules only amateur athletes can take part in the Olympic Games.
One of the reporters discovered that Thorpe had earned 25 dollars a month playing
baseball during two summer vacations some years before. He was not therefore an
amateur athlete and he had to return his gold medals. The men who came second in
the pentathlon and decathlon refused to take them saying they really belonged to
Thorpe.
Thorpe decided to give up amateur athletics. He became a professional baseball and
football player. He continued to play professional football and baseball until 1929.
Since 1929 Thorpe had odd jobs: he worked as a laborer in California, sometimes he
played the part of an Indian in movies about the old West.
On March 28, 1953 Thorpe died in the town of Lomita, California, a poor lonely man
not quite 65 years old.

Man on the moon
On July 16th, 1969, three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael
Collins were travelling through space in a spacecraft called Apollo 11. They were
going to the moon.
Five hundred people were watching them on television as they got closer to the
moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin entered the lunar module, Eagle, and carefully
chose a place to land. It was not easy to find a good place, but at 4:17 pm on July
20th, Armstrong announced, "The Eagle has landed."
It took the two astronauts three hours to put on their space suits and backpacks. By
the time they were ready to leave the Eagle and explore the moon, it was almost
eleven o'clock. As Armstrong was climbing out of the lunar module, he lowered a
television camera. People all over the world watched him step on the surface of the
moon for the first time and heard him say the words, "That's one small step for a man,
one giant leap for mankind."
Aldrin followed Armstrong out of the lunar module and soon the two men were
exploring the surface of the moon. The soil was very different to that on Earth. While

MARK TWAIN'S FIRST MONEY
Somebody once asked Mark Twain whether he could remember the first money he ever
earned.
"I remember quite well", the famous writer answered. "It happened at school. Schoolboys in
those days had very little respect for their teachers and even less for their desks. The boys
used pens and pencils and even knives to draw stars and faces, or to write their names on
their desks. At last, the school principal said; 'The next time anybody does such thing, he
will have to pay five dollars, or he will receive a beating in front of the whole school'.
Soon after that, I had to go to my father and ask him to give me five dollars. I was honest
enough to explain that I could agree to receive a beating instead, but he said: 'No, I can't
allow you to connect our name with such things. So I'll pay the five dollars. But you must
suffer for what you have done. I'll give you the beating here, at home'.
So he beat me, and then gave me the five dollars to take to school. But I decided that the
beating didn't hurt so much, and another beating at school wouldn't be worse. So I told them
to give mе a beating in front of the whole school, and I kept the five dollars. And that was

brush with a long handle. He looked at the fence, and all the gladness left his face, and he
became sad. He was sorry for himself and thought that his life was very difficult.
Jim, the negro boy, came jumping out of the gate with a water bucket and singing a song.

The gift
Oscola McCarty spent more than 75 years washing and ironing other people's
clothes. Her lined hands were the evidence of hard work. So, it was a surprise, when
Miss McCarty decided to give her entire life savings - $150,000 – to the University of
Southern Mississippi. Miss McCarty's gift amazed even those who thought they knew
her well.
The customers who have brought their laundry and ironing to her home for more
than 75 years included three generations of some families. Initially she said she
charged $1.50 to$2 a bundle but with inflation the price rose.
"When I started making $10 a bundle, I began to save money," recollected Miss
McCarty, who was born on March 7 1908. "I put it in savings. I never would take any
of it out. It just accumulated."
As her savings increased over years, McCarty washed and ironed and lived not a rich
life. She never learned to drive and still walks everywhere she goes. When her
mother and aunt died, they each left her some money, which she added to her
savings. In 1947 her uncle died and left her a modest house in which she still lives.
Until her donation, she was afraid to fly and had only been out of the South once in
50 years. Since then she's travelled all over the country and has been the subject of
many interviews and articles. She's even visited the White House and been honoured
by the president.
Her donation of her life savings is for students who clearly demonstrate a financial
need. "I want to help somebody's child go to college," said the quite spoken McCarty,
who left school in sixth grade and has never married or had children. "I just want it to
go to someone who will appreciate it and learn. I'm old. I'm not going to live always."
Miss McCarty's generosity inspired many to give money to the university, and
contributions came in from all over the country. Her gift has now been more than
doubled.

earned over a lifetime on herself. "I am spending it on myself," she answered smiling.
