Analytic Project: Talk Show of Oedipus the King Group Members Group Member Gaby Character(s) Talk Show Host Gwen Tiresias Eduardo Oedipus Analysis of Events Event(s) When Tiresias tells Oedipus that he is the one who killed Lauis. When Oedipus finds out what he did and then stabs his eyes out with Jocastas Pin. When Oedipus curses Tiresias blindness. Analysis This event is full of confusion. Oedipus does not believe Tiresias at all because of the indirect way he was telling him, dropping hints and using riddles. After Tiresias tells him the truth as it is, Oedipus gets angry and curses his blindness. This event was very dramatic, because Jocasta had killed herself and was lying dead. Oedipus sees her like this and wants to be “blinded from all the cruelty in the world” so he decided to poke his eyes out. After Tiresias told Oedipus that he was the murderer, Oedipus got really angry and cursed his blindness. Tiresias reacted just saying that he was only cursing himself, I think this was very dramatic and indicates a little of foreshadowing to the end of the book when Oedipus actually turns blind. Analysis of Characters Character Oedipus Creon Jocasta Tiresias Analysis Protagonist of the story. He marries his mother and kills his father. He is a man of rapid action, is always aware of what is going on. Is unable to see the truth. Always one step ahead of everyone but has a dangerous side to him. Brother of Jocasta. Plays a pretty big role in the story. He represents the real power of human law and the need to have an orderly stable society. Is Oedipus’s wife and mother and Creon’s sister. She is constantly trying to calm down Oedipus, telling him not to worry about the accusations made. When she finds out the truth about Oedipus she is devastated and kills herself. Has a very special gift, because although he is blind he can see more than others. He is the one that tells Oedipus that he killed his father. Tiresias is constantly trying to show people the truth but no one ever believes him at first. Literary Devices Literary Device Identified Foreshadowing & Symbolism Symbolism Irony Theme Reference in Talk Show The time in the book when Oedipus curses Tiresias blindness and Tiresias tells Oedipus that he was only cursing himself indicates Symbolism and Foreshadowing. Symbolism because Oedipus could see, but he was truly blind to seeing things with more depth and couldn’t see the truth in things. Foreshadowing because later on in the book Oedipus pokes his eyes out and ends up actually being blind. Oedipus’s blindness represents how he could not see the truth and did not believe. It is ironic that Tiresias was blind, yet he could see the future and the truth in things. While Oedipus could only see the visual things and couldn’t the truth and did not look into the depth of the things. The theme of the story is the Willingness to Ignore the truth, but also is that Faith is faith and it will happen no matter what someone does to prevent it.
