Junior High Academic Awards
The following awards are given out from grade 7 to 9.
Principal’s Award:
Given to students with the highest overall cumulative average in each grade. Average is calculated
based on the final report.
CFA Student Achievement Award:
Given to the student in each that presents with the greatest increase in overall average from the Term
One report to the Final Report.
Student must be passing all courses to qualify for this award.
CFA French Award:
Given to the student with the highest overall grade in French.

These awards are given to grade 10 -12 students with the highest final school based grade in the subject
areas of Math, Science, English and Social Studies in both the academic and general streams.

Advanced math courses will be recalculated using the psychometrics equivalency calculation currently
used to determine MUN scholarships (based on Public Exam data).
If a student is doing two science courses the science course with the highest grade will be used to
calculate the science award.
CFA Student Achievement Awards:
Given to the student in each course that presents with the greatest increase in overall average from the
Term One report to the Final Report, in the subject areas of Math, Science, English and Social Studies in
both the academic and general streams.

Dr. Conrad Fitzgerald Perseverance Award
This award is selected by the teachers of the Spirit Day Committee (High School Division). This award is
presented to a student or students in recognition of their perseverance and determination to overcome
hurdles to achieve their educational goals.
Student Scholarships
Governor General’s Academic Medal:
Is awarded in September of each year to the student who meeting the following criteria:
The average includes all grade 11 and grade 12 courses (secondary IV and V in Quebec) as listed on the
student’s official Transcript of Grades issued by the ministry of education. The average cannot be
anticipated; it must be calculated based on final results after provincial/territorial examinations, where
the ministry of education requires final exams.
Equitable access for the entire student population is an important aspect of the medal’s value.
Regardless of the stream or the subjects chosen, all students are eligible for consideration upon
graduation.
The student will be notified by mail each September.
G. R. Petite Scholarship ($500.00)
Award to a grade 12 student with the highest academic average, based on MUN entrance requirements.
Lions Club Scholarship ($200.00)
Award to a grade 12 student with the 2nd highest academic average, based on MUN entrance
requirements.
Lioness Scholarship ($100.00)
Award to a grade 12 student with the 3rd highest academic average, based on MUN entrance
requirements.
Memorial University Admission Criteria
The courses below are courses designed for students who intend to seek post-secondary education at
the University or other institutions whose programs demand levels of proficiency equivalent to those
required by the University. Applicants shall have completed Graduation Requirements for high school as
set down by the Department of Education and obtained credits in the following subjects with an overall
average of not less than 70% compiled from the grades received in those courses at the 3000 level.




English: English 3201 (2 credits); or the former combination of Language 3101 (1 credit) and one
of Thematic Literature 3201(2 credits) or Literary Heritage 3202 (2 credits).
Academic or Advanced Mathematics: One of Mathematics 2200, 2201, 2204, or 2205 and one
of Mathematics 3200, 3201, 3204, or 3205 (valued at 2 credits each).
Laboratory Science: Four credits in Laboratory Science (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Earth Systems,
Physics), including at least two credits at the 3000 level chosen from one of Biology 3201,
Chemistry 3202, Earth Systems 3209, or Physics 3204 (valued at two credits each). The
remaining two credits may be selected from 2000-level courses in the above-noted subject
areas or from Science 1206.
Social Science/Modern or Classical Language: Two credits at the 3000 level in a Social Science
area or in a Modern or Classical Language.

Electives: Two credits at the 3000 level in elective courses chosen from the subjects above or
from additional courses approved by the Department of Education for offering at the 3000 level
for certificate purposes.
Mark Courtney Honors Math Scholarships ($100.00, $75.00, $50.00):
$50 scholarship to the Level 1 student with the highest overall cumulative grade in Honors Math 1201
(or equivalent).
$75.00 scholarship to the level 2 student with the highest overall cumulative grade in Honors Math 2200
(or equivalent).
$100.00 scholarship to the level 3 student with the highest overall cumulative grade in Honors Math
3200 (or equivalent).
7-12 Honor Roll:
Presented to students in grades 7-12 who have an overall cumulative average of 80% or more.
7- 12 Achievement Roll:
Presented to students in grades 7-12 who have an overall cumulative average of 70% -79%.
High School Volunteer Award:
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Office of Public Engagement
have established an award that recognizes the community service of young Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians. The high school volunteer award is designed to recognize one student in every high school
for the contribution he or she has made in their community or school, and showcase the significant
contributions that students make throughout the province.
Each high school can select one student annually from Levels I, II, or III for the award. The recipient
could be a student who has volunteered a significant amount of time with an organization or
organizations; someone who made sacrifices, or overcome barriers, to make a volunteer contribution, or
someone who has had an effect on an individual(s) or on their community as a whole. High school
principals will be asked to select the recipient in consultation with students, staff, school councils and
the community.
Information regarding submissions has been sent to all provincial public high schools. Recipients will be
presented with a medallion displaying an image designed by Duane Hollett, a student at John Burke High
School in Grand Bank.
House of Commons Grade 12 Certificates:
Awarded to the grade 12 class.
House of Assembly Grade 12 Certificates:
Awarded to the grade 12 class.
