OZONE What is the Ozone The Ozone Layer | National Geographic Education Video Colorless gas O3: Three oxygen atoms The oxygen we breath only has two oxygen atoms ( O2) Located in the stratosphere Is a greenhouse gas and does help govern Earth’s climate Ozone Questions How is a molecule of ozone different from a molecule of atmospheric oxygen? A. Atmospheric oxygen has one more oxygen atom than ozone B. Atmospheric oxygen has one less oxygen atom than ozone. C. Oxygen and ozone are the same; they are found at different layers of the atmosphere D. Oxygen is produced by plants; ozone is produced when oxygen combines with CO2 Ozone affects in the lower and upper atmosphere Lower Cause rubber to crack Harmful to plants Damages lung tissues Consider pollution Upper http://ozonewatch.gsfc.nasa.gov/, April 6, 2011 Absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun UV-B Protects living organisms Ozone Questions Where is ozone considered a pollutant? A. in the upper atmosphere where it blocks the suns rays B. in the mid-atmosphere where it prevents cloud formation. C. in the lower atmosphere where it impairs normal lung function. D. it is a pollutant everywhere it is found. Ozone Question What does the ozone layer protect living things from? A. bad weather B. ultraviolet rays C. excessive heat D. meteors and meteorites Ozone Depletion Ozone Hole Greatest effects are seen at Earth’s poles Antarctic: ozone hole forms from September to November Artic: ozone hole forms from March to May Not as bad as Antarctic ozone hole because the Artic doesn’t experience as cold of temperatures as Antarctic. “The largest ozone hole ever observed occurred on 24 September 2006.” Chemical reactions involving chlorine, bromine, nitrogen, and hydrogen break down the ozone layer. Also CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) have contributed to the break down. In the winter time at each pole the chlorine and bromine will gather together, because of the lower temperatures and less sunlight. Then in the spring and summer months the sunlight will increase and start the change reaction of the Cl and Br breaking down the ozone layer creating a hole. A. difficult breathing B. fever C. skin cancer D. nagging cough Ozone Question Life on land did not develop on Earth in abundance until the sun’s radiation was reduced. When did this happen? A. when human beings built machines that burn fossil fuels. B. when ozone had been absorbed out of the upper atmosphere C. when plants had an opportunity to live with animals D. when enough ozone had built up in the upper atmosphere
