October 27, 2014 Dear colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to the Newman-FISA Debate Tournament on November 29th for three rounds of competitive debate. The first and second rounds in the Senior division (grades 10, 11, 12) will be two impromptu British Parliamentary debates, each with a 15 minute preparation period. Junior (grades 8, 9, 10) and Novice (grades 6, 7, 8) teams will debate BIRT anti-racism policies are ineffective in B.C. Cross-Examination style. The Round Three resolution will focus on anonymous user apps, such as “Whisper”. The resolution will be announced 20 minutes before the round starts. The top four Senior teams will debate for the Newman-FISA title in the final round of the day. Space is limited, and we can accommodate only 35 teams. As a result, we are initially inviting two teams per school. Registration is due by November 15th. We ask that Island schools bring one judge for each team, and that each mainland school bring at least one judge. Experienced Senior debaters will judge in the Novice division. The tournament fee is $60 per two-person team. Our start time will allow teams to catch the first ferry from the mainland and we will conclude in time for visitors to the island to catch the 7:00 p.m. sailing back to Tsawwassen. We look forward to welcoming you to Brentwood. Sincerely, Neil Bryant 2014 NEWMAN-FISA TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE 10:00 a.m. Registration 10:15 Briefings and release of round 1 topic: 10:30 Round I – Topic #1 11:45 Round II – Topic #2 release 12:00 Round II – Topic #2 12:45 p.m. Lunch 1:15 Announcement of Topic #3 1:20 Affirmatives reveal definitions 1:20-35 Preparation time (NO DEVICES/RESOURCES ALLOWED) 1:40 Round III – Topic #3 3:15 Championship Debate 4:00 Awards Ceremony 4:30 Conclusion For times and procedures using British Parliamentary and Cross-Examination style please refer to: http://www.bcdebate.org/ For British Parliamentary style times and rules, please consult: http://flynn.debating.net/colmmain.htm 2014 NEWMAN-FISA REGISTRATION FORM School: _______________________________________________________ Coach: _____________________________ Coach’s Preferred Contact (phone/e-mail): ___________________________ Team 1 -- Division: ________________ Speaker A: ______________________________________________________ Speaker B: ______________________________________________________ Judge: __________________________________________________________ Team 2 -- Division: ________________ Speaker A: ______________________________________________________ Speaker B: ______________________________________________________ Judge: __________________________________________________________ PLEASE RETURN TO neil.bryant@brentwood.bc.ca BY NOVEMBER 15 Invites you to the: NEWMAN-FISA DEBATE TOURNAMENT Saturday, November 29th 10:00 Registration 10:15 Briefings 10:30 Round I – Topic #1 12:00 Round II – Topic #2 12:45 Lunch available 1:15 Round III Topic#2 Announced 1:15 Affirmatives Reveal Definitions 1:15-1:45 Preparation Time 1:40 Round III – Debates 3:15 Championship Debate 4:00 Awards Ceremony 4:30 Conclusion 2014 NEWMAN-FISA REGISTRATION FORM School: West Point Grey Academy Coach: Lindsay Spencer Coach’s Preferred Contact: lspencer@wpga.ca Team 1 -- Division: Junior Speaker A: Anthony Mak Speaker B: Tiffany Chang Judge: Lindsay Spencer Team 2 -- Division: Junior Speaker A: Emma Blake Speaker B: Erin Brooks Judge: Jack Bacon (TBC) Potential 3rd Team Junior - Mackenzie Sharp - Stuart Wall Space is limited and we can accommodate only 35 teams.
