October 27, 2014
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the Newman-FISA Debate Tournament on
November 29th for three rounds of competitive debate. The first and second
rounds in the Senior division (grades 10, 11, 12) will be two impromptu British
Parliamentary debates, each with a 15 minute preparation period. Junior (grades
8, 9, 10) and Novice (grades 6, 7, 8) teams will debate BIRT anti-racism policies
are ineffective in B.C. Cross-Examination style. The Round Three resolution will
focus on anonymous user apps, such as “Whisper”. The resolution will be
announced 20 minutes before the round starts. The top four Senior teams will
debate for the Newman-FISA title in the final round of the day.
Space is limited, and we can accommodate only 35 teams. As a result, we are
initially inviting two teams per school.
Registration is due by November 15th. We ask that Island schools bring one judge
for each team, and that each mainland school bring at least one judge.
Experienced Senior debaters will judge in the Novice division.
The tournament fee is $60 per two-person team. Our start time will allow teams
to catch the first ferry from the mainland and we will conclude in time for
visitors to the island to catch the 7:00 p.m. sailing back to Tsawwassen.
We look forward to welcoming you to Brentwood.
Sincerely,
Neil Bryant
