ON HOW TO WRITE A CONCLUSION
(FROM HTTP://LEO.STCLOUDSTATE.EDU/ACADWRITE/CONCLUDE.HTML)
• “Conclusions are often the most difficult part of an essay to write, and many writers feel that they have
nothing left to say after having written the paper. A writer needs to keep in mind that the conclusion is
often what a reader remembers best. Your conclusion should be the best part of your paper.”
A conclusion should
• stress the importance of the thesis statement
• give the essay a sense of completeness
• leave a final impression on the reader
Suggestions:
• Answer the question “so what?”
• Synthesize, don’t summarize
• Redirect your readers, give them something to
think about
• Show how your ideas work together to create a
new meaning
REMEMBER THIS THESIS?
In my case, I want to go to college and graduate with a degree
in engineering. … After graduating from college, I want to have
a family and a stable job that satisfies my neccesities and my
major goal in life which is to be happy.
Engineering combines my two favorite subjects in school, mathematics and science. During all
the time that I have been here at Davidson High School, I’ve always enjoyed my math and
science classes. This year I’m taking AP Physics, Calculus BC and AP Statistics. Calculus and
Physics can be used to understand what happens in the planet. This is the reason why these
two subjects would help me to be an excellent engineer. But, how am I going to manage my
finances during college and once I graduate from it? That’s why I’m taking statistics. This
subject can help me manage my money and my life. Next semester I’m going to take
economics which is going to help me to take the most out of my money. If someone doesn’t
know how to deal with money, that person is ruined. Even if their yearly income is a million
dollars, that money can be lost in a couple of days. Statistics can predict scenarios in the
future. Imagine if you can predict the future, you’d be happy for the rest of your life.
Happiness and stability are my major goals in life. So, if I can improve my skills on Physics,
Calculus, and Statistics and make it perfect, I should be able to accomplish both of my goals
in life, becoming an engineer and find happiness in the future.
ANALYSIS
• Did the writer use any of these strategies:
• Answer the question “so what?”
• Synthesize, don’t summarize
• Redirect your readers, give them something to think about
• Show how your ideas work together to create a new meaning
• What is effective about this conclusion?
• What could be improved about this conclusion?
Even though some people think that subjects like Calculus are
unnecessary and difficult, I believe that those subjects challenge our
mental capacity. If more people take these topics seriously, society
could be better prepared to face adversities. If my theory is true, my
lifetime goals can be easily achieved. I believe that my current
activities are really preparing me to achieve my educational and
lifetime goals. These activities are preparing me to take AP exams and
getting college credits, so it is logical that I can be more prepared for
college than others. Being successful in college guarantees me a more
educated and victorious life. Engineering is the key to success in my life.
