VERBS AND THEIR TENSES TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2015 VERB REVIEW– WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR • Verbs are words that show what is happening in a sentence. • Action Verbs: Action Verbs express an action in a sentence. Action Verbs can show mental actions or physical actions. • Transitive Verbs have direct objects. • Intransitive Verbs DO NOT have direct objects. • Linking Verbs connect the subject of the sentence with a noun or adjective in the predicate. VERB TENSES—PART 1 • Tense of the Verb: is the form of the verb that shows the time of the action. • Example: A great actor WINS awards. • There are six verb tenses: Present, Past, Future, Present Perfect, Past Perfect, Future Perfect PRESENT TENSE PART 1 • The Present tense of the verb expresses action that happens regularly. It can also express a general truth. • The base form of a verb is used with all plural subjects and the pronouns I- and You-. • For singular subjects other than I or you, -s or-es is usually added to the base form of the verb. • Remember that a verb must agree in number with its subject. PRESENT TENSE FORMS •Singular I WALK You WALK He, She, It WALKS I DRIVE You DRIVE HE, She, It DRIVES Plural We WALK You WALK They WALK We DRIVE You DRIVE They DRIVE PAST TENSE VERBS The Past tense of the verb expresses action that already happened. The Past tense of the verb is formed by adding –d, or –ed to the base form of the verb. Example: The actors rehearsed. Ms. Ortiz directed. PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN • Directions: For each Sentence write the verb. Then write present or past to identify its tense. 1.I like pizza with everything. 2.James and Betsy waited twenty minutes for the bus. 3.Millions of people around the world are poor. 4.You borrowed too many books from the library. 5.Tulips and daffodils bloom in the spring. EXPRESSING FUTURE TENSE • The future tense of a verb expresses action that will take place in the future. Example: We SHALL ATTEND the performance. Example: The actors will show their talents. • The future tense of a verb is formed by using the helping verb will before the base form of a verb. • The helping verb SHALL is sometimes used when the subject is I or we. MORE WAYS TO EXPRESS THE FUTURE • There are other ways to show that an action will happen in the future: Tomorrow, next year, and later, are all words that indicate a future time. These words are called Time Words., and they may be used with the present tense to express future time.
