Detailed Advising Notes for Students Admitted to OLS B.S. Program (Effective fall 2013) Students admitted to IUPUI from the fall of 2013 forward must complete all IUPUI General Education Core Requirements as part of their undergraduate degree. With the exception of statistics and science, students admitted to the B.S. in Organizational Leadership and Supervision may select from any approved General Education Course List to fulfill each competency area. Students should check the preferred list for Analytical Reasoning – Statistics prior to registering for this degree requirement. Some courses approved for the General Education Core Curriculum will fulfill the IUPUI requirement, but may not fulfill the statistical analysis or research methods requirement for OLS. Non-statistical research courses taken from the General Education Core will apply towards free electives for OLS majors. IUPUI General Education Core Curriculum [30.0 units] Beginning in the fall of 2013, students must take 15 credit hours related to Foundational Intellectual Skills. This includes 6 credits in Core Communication, 3 credits in Cultural Understanding, and 6 credits in Analytical Reasoning. Core Communication – Writing Competency All students must take either ENG-W 131 or ENG-W 140. Core Communication – Speaking & Listening Competency All students must take COMM-R 110. HR Certificate courses are offered online AND on-campus. 3|Page Related Areas of Study & Other Electives [47.0 units] OLS B.S. majors are required to complete 24 credit hours in a single or multidisciplinary subject (technology or other relate area) outside of OLS. Students are encouraged to complete minors or certificates to focus leadership skills on specific career pathways such as: computer network security or administration, construction management, motor sports technology, healthcare systems administration, sports marketing, business, informatics, homeland security, nonprofit management, or organizational communication (see OLS website for a complete list of approved concentration areas for leadership students). Students must also complete one quality or economy course. The balance of degree requirements are distributed through TCM coursework to improve student communication and progression development and Free Electives for a total minimum of 120.0 units to graduate with a B.S. degree. Note: Students who have completed an A.S. or A.A.S. degree in an approved technology discipline are not required to earn additional minors or certificates as part of the OLS B.S. requirements. Technical or Related Core Requirement OLS B.S. majors must complete 24 credits in an approved area outside of OLS [minors and/or certificates are strongly encouraged]. Written Communication & Professional Development Requirements – OLS B.S. majors must take 7 credits of technical communication/writing courses/career planning coursework as follows: Take TCM 2200 Technical Report Writing [Course equivalencies for TCM 22000 include BUS-X 204, ENG-W 132, ENG-W 231, or any other 300-/400-level TCM course except TCM 32000*.] Take TCM 2500 Career Planning [course equivalencies include all other career planning coursework]. Take TCM 32000 Written Communication in Science & Industry. Free Electives – All students at IUPUI must complete a total of 120 college level credits (32 credits must be taken after admission to the OLS B.S. program – residency requirement). Prerequisite coursework (such as Math 11100 or ENG-W 1 do not count towards the 120 credit requirement).
