Talk: The study of extra-cellular matrix of connective tissues and impact on biomimicking composites
Speaker: Dr Kheng-Lim Goh, Monash University, Sunway Campus
Date & Time : 13/8/2010, 2.00-3.00pm
Venue: DK4A
Attendance: This talk is open to all staff and students. Free admission
Abstract: Reinforcement of materials by load bearing fibres with high tensile stiffness
and strength provides a way for producing composite materials of high strength and
toughness. As a result of the progress in the past 60 years, fibre composite materials
have gained technological and economical importance owing to their superior
performance and versatility. Over the last 10 years, together with collaborators at
several institutes, we have sought to understand the mechanics of stress transfer from
the matrix material to the fibre in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of biological tissues.
Here we will focus on connective tissues that involve a highly ordered arrangement of
collagen fibrils reinforcing the hydrated proteoglycan-rich matrix in tendons, muscles
and ligaments. This talk is intended to present a unifying theme for elucidating the
stress transfer mechanisms in these tissues. The emphasis on a basic understanding of
the interplay of these ECM components is important to our long term goal for designing
effective load bearing bio-mimicking materials for implants in the body.

Talk: Cryptography: Past, Current and Future
Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goi Bok Min, Faculty of Engineering and Science
Date & Time : 16/6/2010, 2.00-3.00pm
Venue: DK3
Participants : The seminar is open to all staff and students. Admission is free and no
registration required.
Abstract
Due to the development of computer networks, the volume of information stored &
communicated electronically has increased exponentially. This has led to the
awareness of the need to guarantee the security of the information. Cryptology is the
best solution to this; though oblivious to most, it is inherent in digital security systems.
The original objective of cryptography is to provide privacy / confidentiality to allow
multi-parties having their private communication via insecure channel. As a result, in the
past 35 years, there has been steady increased interest in cryptographic studies both in
academic and private sectors. In this talk, we first introduce the background / history of
cryptology and some common cryptographic primitives. Then, we give an overview on
the state-of-the-art of cryptology, and then discuss some open problems that the
cryptologic community is working on. For more information, you may refer to here.

Talk: How to Model and Simulate a Network with a Billion Nodes
Speaker: Professor Edwin K. P. Chong, Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering
Colorado State UniversityDate & Time: 24/5/2010(Mon), 3.00-4.00pm
Venue: DK1
Participants : All students and staff are welcome
Highlights: This talk is concerned with the modeling and simulation of extremely large
networks. The conventional approach is Monte Carlo simulation, which is impractical for
networks with very many nodes. We will describe an approach based on considering a
"continuum limit". Specifically, we show how to derive a partial differential equation
whose solution captures the behavior of a large wireless network. Continuum modeling
provides a powerful way to deal with the number of components in large networks, and
opens up the use of highly sophisticated mathematical tools such as adaptive finite
element methods. This, in turn, makes it possible to carry out with reasonable
computational burden even for very large systems, i. e. network performance evaluation
and prototyping, network design, systematic parameter studies, and optimization of
network characteristics.
