Gouge Sheet General Orders to the Sentry: Preamble – “Sir/Ma’am, the ___ order to the sentry is…” 1. Take charge of this post and all government property in view. 2. Walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert, and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. 3. Report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce. 4. Repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse or the quarterdeck than my own. 5. Quit my post only when properly relieved. 6. Receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the commanding officer, command duty officer, officer of the day, officer of the deck, and officers and petty officers of the watch only. 7. Talk to no one except in the line of duty. 8. Give the alarm in case of fire or disorder. 9. Call the corporal of the guard or officer of the deck in any case not covered by instructions. 10. Salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased. 11. Be especially watchful at night, and during the time for challenging, challenge all persons on or near my post, and to allow no one to pass without proper authority. It cannot be longer than 4 inches in length and 2 inches in bulk. Sideburns cannot extend past the middle of the ear. Shaving – The face needs to have a clean shave. Anything else will be unacceptable. Fingernails – Cannot extend past the fingertips and must be kept clean. Earrings – Not authorized while in uniform. Females: Hair – Must look like a natural hair color and be pulled back into a bun or cut short. Buns need to be gelled back so that there are no bangs or stray hairs. Short hair must also be neatly gelled back, and cannot extend past the bottom edge of the collar. Cosmetics – Natural looking makeup is permitted, as long as it blends with the natural skin tone. Fingernails – Cannot exceed ¼ inch from the fingertip and must be kept clean. Nail polish may be worn, but needs to be the color of the natural skin tone. Earrings – One earring per ear, centered, may be worn. Must be a either a small gold or silver ball. Anything else will not be permitted while in uniform. Both: Necklaces – One may be worn, but must be kept hidden while in uniform. However, it is highly discouraged. Rings – One ring per hand is authorized, in addition to engagement rings. Bracelets – One per hand is permitted while in uniform.
