A TRIBUTE TO SHAKESPEAREAND CHILEAN PREMIERES IN PUBLICARE SOME OF THE

More than 60 shows from 20 countries and 4 continents will take part in the 23rd version of the Santiago a
Mil International Festival, held between January 3-24, 2016.

Ticketsales for the Festival will begin on Tuesday, November 3 at the Theater Box Office in the Costanera
Center, at the GAM Center(once more the festival’s official venue) and at www.fundacionteatroamil.cl.
From that date onwards and until November 30, tickets for the Grandes Espectáculoswill have a 40%
discount.

Created and organized by the Teatro a Mil Foundation and presented in conjunction with Minera
Escondida, operated by BHP Billiton, Santiago a Milis recognized under the Law of Cultural Donations
and is supported of the National Council for Culture and the Arts with the patronage of the Costanera
Center and in association with the Image of Chile Foundation.
Santiago, October 29, 2015. The countdown has begun!A new version of the Santiago a Mil International Festival will be
held between January 3-24, 2016 with the aim of putting Chilean and international contemporary and performing arts in
the spotlight. In its 23rd edition, this event will take over 22 cultural locations - with the GAM Center once again being the
official venue - as well as different public areas in the country, putting on 66 shows (35 from Chile and 31 from abroad)
and more than 240 functions from 20 countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania and principally Latin America, with Argentina
being particularly well represented.
Created and organized by the Teatro a MilFoundation and presented in conjunction withMinera Escondida, operated by
BHP Billiton and supported by the National Council for Culture and the Artswith the patronage of the Costanera Centerand
in association with the Image of Chile Foundation, this new edition of the festival will be held in more than 20 of the
Metropolitan Region’s neighborhoods, six of which fulfil the role of host: Santiago, Quilicura, Puente Alto, Melipilla,
Peñalolén and La Granja.
As part of this mission, several of the shows in the program–which includes theater, dance, music, circus, photography,
performance and street theater, with an emphasis on new forms of expression - will be shown for free in another seven
regions: Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, Maule and Bío-Bío. In
the same way, the selection of Chilean shows for the Festival’s program includes plays from different areas of the country,
such as La quebrada de los sueños from Antofagasta El taller de las mariposas andHetu'u, en el ombligo del mundofrom
Valparaíso andLa lunafrom Concepción.
“As we have done for more than two decades with every version, in January 2016 we will renew our commitment to
making the performing arts important in people’s lives, putting on a program for the city that has been created with the
community in mind and transforming public areas into inclusive locations in which we can all share together. Through the
avant-garde and contemporary perspectives of artists in Chile and throughout world, we want to move the boundaries of
what is possible and make the arts even more accessible to the public. This year, the slogan La vida es puro
teatro clearly reflects the fact that theater is part of our lives and, at the same time, that these living arts can tell us more
about who we are and give us a glimpse of what we could end up being", statesCarmen Romero, Executive Director of
the Teatro a Mil Foundation.
For her part, María Olivia Recart, Vice-President of Corporate Affairs at Minera Escondida, operated by BHP Billiton,
indicated that “we firmly believe that culture of a high quality is essential to strengthening social capital and countries’
identities. Societies that are empowered are better prepared to successfully face the challenges that development
involves. Our support for this project mainly consists of bringing family-orientated, free shows to the general public in 20
neighborhoods in the Metropolitan Region. During our 16 continuous years of support for the Festival, we are also proud
to have driven the efforts aimed at cultural decentralization, which is one of the main issues in our country. Antofagasta a
Mil and Iquique a Mil are concrete examples of this”.
Regarding Santiago a Mil’s contributionyear after year, Ana Carolina Arriagada, Regional Director of the Council for
Culture for the Metropolitan Region indicates that,“the Festival has provided joy and an opportunity for reflectionfor so
many years, connecting our creators with the world and providing an avant-garde program of international drama. Above
all, it has also contributed to decentralization and the creation of new audiences in the country’s regions”.
As is customary since 2014, Santiago a Mil has also taken advantage of this opportunity to pay tribute to Chilean creators.
In its 23rd edition, it is the turn of the renowned actor and directorHéctor Noguera,recently awarded the National Prize for
Performing Arts, who will be celebrated through the premiere of Sueño de una noche de verano, his adaptation of the
Shakespeare classic.
Letus also remember that in its 22 years, the Santiago a Mil International Festival has put on 873 Chileanproductions and
353 international ones, offered more than 350 additional activities and training opportunities and has brought together
nearly a million people, thus consolidating itself as the largest platform in Chile for the performing arts.
Grandes Espectáculos
As in every edition, one of the main characteristics of the Festival is the quality of the shows that are part of its program.
Every year, outstandingplays from the international stage are included, as well as a selection of the most outstanding
works from Chile.
In this category, the Grandes Espectáculos that feature this year are: m¡longa, directed by the renowned Belgian artist
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui; Political mother by the Israeli choreographer Hofesch Shechter; 템페스트 (The tempest),directed by
the Korean Oh Tae-suk; El select(El sol también se levanta) by Ernest Hemingway,directed by John Collins; Canciones
de Lear,directed by the Pole Grzegorz Bral;Cabaret Brecht - Weill,a musical theater show, with songs by Bertolt Brecht
and Kurt Weill and involving artistic director Marcelo Lombardero and Still life, by the Greek director and creator, Dimitris
Papaioannou. The latter is part of Santiago a Mil’s Experimental Stage,together with works such as Plexus, a dance
show created by the Frenchman Aurélien Bory for the Japanese dancer Kaori Ito; Paraíso–colección privada, by the
Portuguese director Marlene Monteiro Freitas and her Bomba Suicida company and Un cuerpo en lugares, a dance by
the Japanese artist Eiko, which includes a photography exhibition on the nuclear disaster at Fukushima.
Paying tribute to Shakespeare!
A large-scale tribute will be paid to the genius of the most important English playwright, William Shakespeare, in this new
version of the festival, with the 400 year anniversary of the death of the author being commemorated with four shows that
have received praise worldwide and five Chilean productions, three of which are premieres
Korean culture and folklore is reflected with 템페스트 (The tempest )by director Oh Tae-suk and the Mokwha Repertory
company, inspired as much by Shakespeare’s work as by the Crónicas de los Tres Reinos. The Chileanversion of La
tempestad by the renowned dramatist Juan Radrigán brutally deals with a topic that is extremely relevant and poetically
described in the original text, with the main role of Próspero being played by the actress Claudia di Girolamo. The
tragedy of Rey Lear, on the other hand,will be conveyed through gestures, words and music in Canciones de Lear,
created by the Pole Grzegorz Bral andthe Song of the Goat Theater and which has received a Herald Archangel and
Musical Theater Matters Special Award from the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. The characters of Julio Césarwill be
depicted with controversial skill by Romeo Castellucci in Julio César, fragmentos, an Italian production where text,
bodies and power combine in a battle to the death. From Argentina,Gabriel Chamé Buendíawill add a touch of burlesque
with his version of Otelo, interpreted by four actors who are experts in physical and clown theater.
Shakespeare in public: taking a chance on Chilean productions
In the framework of the Shakespearecelebration, the Teatro a Mil Foundation has this year placed particular emphasis on
taking over public spaces. The Chilean contribution to what will be shown on the street is headed up by two coproductions
created especially for this version of the Festival.
The first - which will inaugurate the Festival on the street on Sunday, January 3 - is Reinas de la calle, a street theater
production created byLa Gran Reyneta and Mariana Muñoz, which will travel through the center of Santiago, filling the
streets with fragments of the translations of Romeo y Julieta by Pablo Neruda,El Rey Lear by Nicanor Parra and Hamlet
by Raúl Zurita. Sueño de una noche de verano by Héctor Noguera and Daniel Muñoz, an adaptation in popular Chilean
verse (ten line stanzas),will also be performed in public, transporting the magic of Shakespeareto a Chilean context with
the help of fairies, wizards and princes.
To these are added the premiere of 31 minutos: Romeo y Julieta, where characters from the popular children’s series
will perform an extremely loose interpretation of the Shakespearean classic and Yorick, la historia de Hamlet, a
monologue performed by the renowned actor Francisco Reyes and directed by his son Simón Reyes, which describes
the tragedy of the Danish prince.

For the fifth consecutive year, the festival will include Tocatas Mil,held in the A1 Auditorium at the GAM Center. Some of
the musicians taking part include the Chileans Javier Barría and Paz Court, as well as Rosantha Love from Uruguay
and many more.
Organized by the Teatro a Mil Foundation’sEducation and Community Department, artists, students and the public in the
Metropolitan Region and the regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta can participate in Performance LAB activities. In its
third version, this will offer training through three programs: a Summer School (artistic workshops and keynote classes), a
Public Forum (conversations and dialogue with the public) and Young Audiences (a program that brings the theater closer
to children between 7 and 12 years old). All these activities are free but require prior registration.
Artists themselves can once again be part of an exclusive showcase for the internationalization of Chilean and Latin
American theater throughPlatea16;a platform for dialogue, exchange and business that brings together professionals from
the area of production.

From Tuesday, November 3, tickets will be on sale for all shows at the Theater Box Office at the Costanera Center, at the GAM
Center andat www.fundacionteatroamil.cl. Open Season Tickets can be redeemed up to December 31 in these same three
places. In addition, from this date onwards and until November 30 only, tickets to the Grandes Espectáculoswill have a 40%
discount.
