Introduction to CITI Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative (CITI) • 2004 –Expansion to K-12 –Funding under the Economic Stimulus Package’s Pipeline Fund (administered by the Board of Higher Education) Introduction to CITI • December RFP – 17 applications – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts – Pioneer Valley STEMnet – Framingham State College – Quinsigamond Community College (BATEC replication) CITI Goals IT Fluency – “Preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s technologyinfused world.” What is IT Fluency? IT Fluency – The National Research Council’s three types of IT knowledge: Skills - proficiency with contemporary computer applications Concepts – e.g., how a computer works, information authenticity Capabilities - higher-level thinking processes, e.g., problem-solving, reasoning, complexity management What is IT Fluency? • “By 2010, we envision students graduating from secondary and postsecondary public institutions who are fluent in IT and able to use these skills in any industry context.” What is ITAC? Information Technology Across the Curriculum -The integration of IT fluency education across existing subjects and curricula. -This approach has been shown to be more effective for non-traditional STEM learners. CITI and the Pipeline Fund K-12 IT Pipeline Fund Grants Competition • Working with regional partnerships to produce the best possible programs. • Build partnerships within the regions. • Encourage coordination within regions. • Require regional leaders be notified. The RFP The Grants A – Team Professional Development Grants. •Partnerships •Professional development for in-service teachers •IT skills, IT understanding, integration IT throughout existing curriculum •Up to $30,000 each The Grants B – Continuing Professional Development Grants •Partnerships •Previous CITI grantees •To train a new group of teachers (up to $20,000) or extend activities with existing teachers ($5,000) The Grants C – Pre-Service ITAC Integration •Adapting existing preservice teacher courses to reflect goals of ITAC and IT fluency •Encouraged to offer these courses online •$3,000 to $8,000 each Agenda Priorities Review of the RFP - Understanding of ITAC concept - Capacity to provide quality PD - Future impact on student learning - Expertise and knowledge in this area Agenda Priorities (cont.)
