What is IT
Fluency?
IT Fluency –
The National Research Council’s
three types of IT knowledge:
Skills - proficiency with
contemporary computer
applications
Concepts – e.g., how a computer
works, information authenticity
Capabilities - higher-level thinking
processes, e.g., problem-solving,
reasoning, complexity
management
What is IT
Fluency?
• “By 2010, we
envision students
graduating from
secondary and postsecondary public
institutions who are
fluent in IT and able
to use these skills in
any industry
context.”
What is ITAC?
Information Technology
Across the Curriculum
-The integration of IT
fluency education across
existing subjects and
curricula.
-This approach has been
shown to be more
effective for non-traditional
STEM learners.

•Adapting existing preservice teacher courses
to reflect goals of ITAC
and IT fluency
•Encouraged to offer
these courses online
•$3,000 to $8,000 each
