Doctoral candidates
• Major field specialization
The HEC doctoral program includes a year of specialization that encompasses
coursework and graduate-level seminars, as well as a doctoral seminar in a major
field of specialization.
During this period, each student works closely with an advisor who helps
determine his or her choice of courses and who designs a personalized reading list
(i.e. a bibliography of fundamental research). The first year ends with a major
field exam (late June), followed by a presentation of a draft of the student’s
dissertation (in October-November).
• While writing the dissertation
In view of highlighting research during the year of specialization, once
dissertations are underway, several « Research and Debate » sessions with the
faculty will be organized by doctoral candidates.
Moreover, candidates will be in charge of organizing a session with their advisors
in view of writing their dissertations (methodology and/or argumentation), as part
of the « Dissertation Follow-up ».

Pedagogical Objectives
The aim of the doctoral seminar in Human Resources Management is
to invigorate and promote the HEC doctoral department community in
view of three main pedagogical objectives :
– allowing graduate students to examine a range of trends in
fundamental and current research in Human Resources
Management and Organizational Sciences.
– assisting candidates in their argumentation and drafts for their
dissertation.
– and familiarizing students with various research environments and
teams at the French and international levels.
The HEC-HRM doctoral program is threefold and involves :
– Major Field Specialization
– Dissertation Follow-up
– Debates and Researches

The HEC-HRM Doctoral Program
– MAJOR FIELD SPECIALIZATION
This highlights a panoply of recent research in Human Resources
Management and Organizational Sciences.
The doctoral candidate will have one week to prepare a key choice of
articles and texts designed by his or her professors who will specify what
needs to be done. During the session, the professor will focus on highly
pertinent aspects (for about 1 hour), followed by in-depth analyses with
the given student (for about 2 hours).
Major field specialization will include a series of assignments that will be
evaluated by the professors.

– DISSERTATION FOLLOW-UP. This involves formally examining the
dissertations that are underway in the HRM department and providing
students with methodology, theory and other instructive information.
Once a year, all doctoral candidates are requested to give an account of the
work they have done on their dissertation through an oral presentation. It is
to include the following points :
•A draft (specifying research questions, hypotheses and
methodology used)
•Initial results
•Difficulties encountered
•Tentative timetable
The doctoral candidate is to prepare a copy of his or her work that must be
submitted to an advisor two weeks prior to a 45-minute (maximum) oral
presentation.
Each candidate is welcome to invite professors or students from other
departments or research institutions if he or she cares to do so.
Once a dissertation has been successfully completed, the dissertation
follow-up covers: «Oral presentation : what is involved and its modalities ».

-RESEARCH SEMINARS
These sessions aim at enhancing the intellectual capital of each
participant through experience-sharing and analyzing research conducted
in the HEC-HRM department, in France and abroad. They provide for a
cross-fertilization of knowledge among experts in view of promoting
new exchange networks.
The Doctoral candidates prepare, chair and participate in the debates
along with the HRM faculty. One person is in charge of preparing,
organizing and ensuring the follow-up for each session.
