Prerequisites:
As a prerequisite for the first day of class, you must complete the online
course “IT for Management”. You must complete this online course before the
first day of class. This course should take 12-15 hours to complete and will
provide you with the foundation for what we will discuss in class. It is very
important that you take your time and work your way through this course
carefully. You are required to take all quizzes in this course and your quiz
grades in this online course will have a significant impact on your final grade for
this course. Directions for acquiring these course materials are found below.
Disability disclosure statement:
Any student who has a need for accommodation based on the impact of a disability
should contact me privately to discuss the specific situation as soon as possible. Contact
Disability Resources and Services at 215-204-1280 in 100 Ritter Annex to coordinate
reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities.
Student and Faculty Academic Rights and Responsibilities Policy:
Freedom to teach and freedom to learn are inseparable facets of academic freedom. The
University has a policy on Student and Faculty and Academic Rights and Responsibilities
(Policy #03.70.02) which can be accessed through the following link:
http://policies.temple.edu/getdoc.asp?policy_no=03.70.02.
Course Description:
MIS5122 is a technology “boot camp” for students entering the MS in IT Auditing and
Cyber Security (ITACS) program which do not have a strong background in technology.
This will be a demanding, fast paced course which utilizes online learning, traditional
lectures/discussions, and hands-on exercises to introduce students to the technologies IT
Auditors will need to work with when they complete the ITACS program.
The course has two major parts. The first part is a self-paced online course from Harvard
Business Publishing which will introduce students to the technologies we will work with
in the classroom. Completion of this online course, including the online quizzes, is a
prerequisite for the second part of the course. Completion of this part of the course will
require approximately 15 hours. Students should NOT underestimate the amount of time

and effort they will need to invest in order to be successful in this part of the course.
Quiz grades from this part of the course make up a very significant portion of your final
grade for this course.
The second part of this course takes place in a traditional computer lab. A significant
amount of reading will need to be completed each evening so that the student has the
proper foundation before class meetings.
Course Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Be able to explain the major components which comprise any computing
system.
2. Be able to explain system software and to contrast system software from
application software.
3. Be able to explain the major components of a computer network.
4. Be able to explain how organizations manage and work with data.
5. Be able to explain applications software and to contrast application software
with systems software.
