Welcome Back! We hope this year is a successful and fulfilling one for you all!
9/9/15 - The Three Things Essay – due tomorrow, typed and double-spaced.
This essay should be entitled “The Three Things I Like Best About Myself”
and should contain 5 paragraphs: Introduction, 3 body paragraphs, Conclusion.
9/10/15 – Today, you handed in your Three Things Essay. (see above)
We filled in our attendance/information charts.
Tonight, please carefully read over the Course Description sheet and the
Quarterly Current Event Assignments sheet I gave you on Wed. You are
responsible for knowing the information on those sheets.
Tomorrow, we will give out books.
9/11/15 – We distributed books today and recorded the numbers and condition.
We ask that you cover the books and bring them back for a cover check
on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Today is the 14th anniversary of 9/11. We discussed the history of the
events that unfolded on this day of tragedy for our nation and the world.

9/15/15 – We had the book cover check today.
We took the Initial Assessment for U.S. History 1 today.
We discussed why geography and its importance to human culture.
You took notes on what we brainstormed. We will have a geography quiz at the
end of the week.
No homework this evening.
9/16/15 – Today, we worked in groups on matching geography terms with
their definitions. You are responsible for having all the terms and
definitions written in your notebooks. (They are NOT in your text.)
Your homework is to study these and have a working knowledge of them
for tomorrow’s discussion. You will be having a geography quiz by the
end of the week.
9/17/15 – We reviewed all of our geography concepts today.
You should know all the terms, the 5 Themes of Geography (“Mr. Lip”),
and the two questions: How does geography impact human culture?
How do humans impact their geography, and how does
geography impact humans.
You should be able to give examples in both answers.

9/18/15 – Geography Quiz today.
Assignment of Current Event presenters.
We explained how to do Current Events and picked around five people to give a
Current Event presentation next Friday, Sept. 25. These people must bring in an
article for approval by Tuesday, 9/22, of next week. (We don’t have school on
Wed.)

9/21/15 – Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We thank all the parents
who came to Back To School Night. We can’t tell you how much your support
means to us.
In class today, we discussed material found in Section 1 of Chapter 1.
Read Sections 1 and 2 (Ch. 1) this evening, for comprehension. Do #4 on p.
7 and #3 on p. 13, typed and double-spaced, due tomorrow. You may put the
answers on the same page.
Current Event volunteers need to have their articles approved by
tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/21.
9/22/15 – Current Event articles were due to be approved today from the
volunteers.
The questions you did for homework last night, see above, were due today.
We finished material in Section 1 of Ch. 1 and went on to Section 2.
Tonight, you are to read Sections 3, 4 and 5 for homework. Read for
comprehension so that you will be prepared for class.

9/24/15 – We have scheduled our Test for Chapter 1 for Wednesday, 9/30.
We finished sections two and three in our class discussions today.
You also received your study guides today, and you should have read the entire
chapter by now.

10/12/15 – We watched “The Terrible Transformation” today in class, a film that
reinforces what we have been discussing in class about the appearance of
slavery in the English colonies. Make sure that you have read Section 3 of
Chapter 2 for tomorrow.

10/13/15 – Our discussion centered on the build-up to Bacon’s Rebellion in 1675.
No Current Events this week.
Your homework tonight is to answer questions 5 and 6 on the Capt. John
Smith Primary Source sheet we gave you. The answers should be typed
and double-spaced and handed in tomorrow.
10/14/15 – No Current Events tomorrow.
Annotate the two readings, Pilgrims, and Puritans, for use in class
tomorrow. Look up any words or phrases you do not understand. Underline and
highlight at will on your readings.
Section 3 of Chapter 2 should have been read.
10/16/15 – We jumped into Section 3 today – Puritans create a “New” England.
You used the notes you annotated in class.
We gave out a handy graphic organizer (chart) to help you keep Pilgrims
and Puritans straight. Please fill it out, using bullets/phrases, written in PEN, for
Monday, Oct. 19. Have a great weekend!!!
10/19/15 – We further clarified things about the Pilgrim/Puritan chart today,
so it will now be due tomorrow. We gave out new blank charts to anyone
who needed them.
There will be Current Events this week and you know who you are. Articles
are due by Wednesday for approval.

We passed out Mayflower Compact packets and question sheets. The

10/29/15 – We began Chapter 3 today. This chapter is really about the founding
of England’s southern colonies and the entrenchment of slavery in all 13
of their colonies.
We gave out a 13 colonies map today, with a half-sheet of instructions.
This will be due on Monday, Nov. 2.
No Current Events tomorrow.
10/30/15 – The discussion today centered on the way the colonies were governed
by England, and on the system of mercantilism.
Remember that your 13 Colonies Map is due on Monday, Nov. 2.

11/2/15 – We discussed ways in which the colonies sought to get around all the
rules set up by the British to keep them within their mercantile system.
Smuggling and Navigation Acts were significant concepts.

11/9/15 – We finished Section 1 of Chapter 3 today. Please read Section 2 for
tomorrow. If you forgot to bring in the film permission slip, please do it
ASAP, as we want to show the 15 min. clip on Wednesday.
11/10/15 – Our discussion today centered on Southern colonies and plantations.
We gave you a reading for homework about the Amistad, a slave ship.
You need to have brought in your film permission slip to see the clip we are
showing tomorrow from the film, Amistad. The reading will give you some
necessary history about the ship. No Current Events this week!
11/11/15 – We had our Middle Passage interactive lesson today, along with
the clip from the movie, “Amistad.” You were given two readings on
Olaudah Equiano. You are to do the questions at the end of each reading.
Please type and double-space your answers, and use proper headings.
Read the articles carefully and answer the questions completely.

11/12/15 – We discussed the Southern Social Ladder today and the Treatment
of Slaves in the Different Colonies.
Remember to read Section 3 of Chapter 3 and your Olaudah Equiano
homework is due tomorrow. See above.
11/13/15 - Our discussion centered on slave codes, the invention of the cotton
gin and its impact on slavery. Next week, we’ll be going into Sections 3 & 4.
We’re planning a test on Ch. 3 before the Thanksgiving break. It will be on
Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Concord. You have an assignment due Tuesday, Dec. 8: “The Shot Heard
‘Round the World.” You are to write directly on the paper, neatly and in
pen. There are two sides to the assignment and two points of view. There
are also many words that we might not know. Annotate the passages,
looking up any words you do not understand. This will help you to really

12/7/15 – Pearl Harbor Day
We examined the 2nd Continental Congress’ choice for commander of the
Continental army. He was not a shoe-in. Ethan Allen, his Green Mountain
Boys, and their gift to G.W. was also mentioned.
We reviewed the assignment that is due tomorrow – “The Shot Heard
‘Round the World.”
Current Event volunteers – your articles must be approved by Wed., 12/9.
12/8/15 – A group activity today on the Acts. Be sure to fill in the graphic
organizer, so that you do not get confused about them.
We discussed how the 2nd Continental Congress began to act as a sort of
government to the colonists. The Olive Branch Petition was rejected by
King George III. Benedict Arnold was mentioned, as well as “Common
Sense,” by Thomas Paine. Tomorrow, be sure to know the reasons Paine
gave for parting from Britain. We will also be discussing the Declaration
of Independence. READ the chapter (4) to be prepared for class.
We collected the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” today.

12/9/15 – We discussed the Declaration of Independence today – its structure
and purposes, as well as its connection and relevance to today.

12/21/15 – We discussed the powers and weaknesses of the Articles of
Confederation, up to Shays’ Rebellion.

12/22/15 – We continued our discussion of the weaknesses of the Articles and
the resolution of the western lands problem. Please read Chapter 5.
12/23/15 – We only met with mods 1 – 2 today, and we viewed a portion of
the film, “The Crossing.”

Conventioneers, and the other is The Delegates Draft the Constitution.

1/6/16 – We reviewed all the checks and balances of the three branches of our
government today. We also discussed ratification of the Constitution and
what that process entailed. Tomorrow, we will discuss specific
amendments of our Constitution and your rights as a citizen of the U.S.

tomorrow.
Also, you should have the back of the Review Guide filled out, so that we
can use it tomorrow in class.
Our Chapter 5 test is this coming Monday, January 11. We will begin our

2/9/16 – Mods 1-2 is playing catch-up, so we examined the three court cases that
strengthened the power of the federal govt., the Convention of 1818, the
Adams-Onis Treaty and the Monroe Doctrine. Mods 7-8, we discussed the
Missouri-Compromise and the arrival, on the political scene, of Andrew
Jackson.
We handed out a sheet on Andrew Jackson that should be read.
Also, we distributed the Andrew Jackson Map, and explained how it should

2/23/16 – Our discussion today centered around the Religious revival of the late
1700s, early 1800s. Please read Ch. 8.

2/24/16 – Today is the deadline for having Current Event articles approved.
You were given a graphic organizer, as well as a sheet with all the reforms
and reformers, to use as study aids for this chapter. The graphic organizer
will not be collected, but experience has shown that those who fill it out
properly and use it to study do better on the chapter test.
You also picked three assignments from the “Reform Buffet,” which are
due on Monday, Feb. 29, typed and double-spaced, all with proper
headings and titles.

today. You also picked the reformer about whom you will write. Please

should be typed and double-spaced.

2/29/16 – Your “Buffet” assignments were due today. Your Reform Broadsheet
is due on Wednesday. You are continuing to read Chapter 8.
No Current Events this week.
3/1/16 – Your Reform Broadsheet is due tomorrow, and we will hang up the
Broadsheets tomorrow for a gallery walk.
No Current Events this week.
We are planning for a test next week on Ch. 8 and we will let you know,
probably by tomorrow, when that will be. Use the graphic organizer and
the sheet that has all the reforms and reformers on it to study.
3/2/16 – We displayed the Reform Broadsheets that were due today.
We had a “gallery walk” and gathered additional information for our
graphic organizers. Tomorrow, we will schedule your test for next week.

3/3/16 – We continued with the reforms, finishing Workers’ Rights, the Mentally
Ill and Imprisoned and Pacifism. We will finish up all other reforms, except
for Abolition, tomorrow.
Our Ch. 8 test has been scheduled for Wed., March 9. Use the graphic
organizers we gave you to study, as well as your notes and text.
3/4/16 – We examined the reforms of Education and Literature today.
We will look at Abolition exclusively on Monday. Tuesday will be our
review. Wednesday, March 9 is our Test on Ch. 8.

3/7/16 – We pretty much finished Abolition today. We really focused on the
difference between a moderate and a militant abolitionist. Tomorrow,
we will have our review for our test on Wednesday, March 9. Use your
graphic organizer, your notes and your text to help you study. We are
available for helping anyone review before or after school.
3/8/16 – Our review for the test was today. We went over everything and
you should be prepared. Use your graphic organizer, your notes and your
text to help you study. We are available for helping anyone review before
or after school.
3/9/16 – The Chapter 8 Test was today.
Current Events will be on Friday. The deadline for getting articles approved
was changed to Thursday.
Begin reading Ch. 9.
3/10/16 – We started Ch. 9 today. We’re moving west! Please read the chapter.
Current Event volunteers needed to have their articles approved by today.
You received the Jim Beckwourth assignment today. Please type and
double-space the answers to numbers 1 and 2. When you do number 3,
please draw a tombstone and put Jim B’s name on it, along with pertinent
info, and then do what the question asks: write an epitaph for Jim on his
tombstone. (Look up the word epitaph if you’re not sure what it means.)
You may hand draw the tombstone or computer generate it.

3/14/16 – Your Jim Beckwourth assignment was due today.
We are almost through Sec. 2 of Ch. 9. Tomorrow, we will look at the Gold
Rush in California, and then move on to Mexico. Please read your chapter.
3/15/16 – Today, we discussed the Gold Rush and viewed pictures from that era.
Make sure to go over that portion of the chapter, and review your notes.
We will be discussing Sections 3 & 4 tomorrow.
3/16/16 – We examined the Mexican Revolution and the Texas Revolution today.
You were given a map of Westward Routes, due on Monday, March 21.
You can reference your textbook (pages are on instruction sheet). Please
come for help if you need it.
3/17/16 – Happy St. Paddy’s Day!!!
We got into the Mexican War today and we will finish it and the chapter
tomorrow. We will have our review on Monday and our test on
Tuesday, March 22 (Chapter 9).
Remember that your Western Route map is due on Monday, March 21.
